I received a copy of the book from Net Gallery. This has no way influenced my review.
First off I'm really surprised to see some of the ratings this book was given because I really liked it. The beginning of the book is about Neveah's childhood and how it shapes her into the powerful warrior that she becomes. Often, female characters become too masculine, but Neveah is neither. Jessica Gleave managed to create the perfect blend of a fierce warrior and a feminine girl. The first in a series, this was great way to start. I loved the mythology surrounding the Sky Realm because it gives the book more depth. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will be looking for more books by this author.

The cover was visually stunning, and the blurb pulled me in right away. This concept seemed to be new and exciting which why I requested the title.
I found that I was not pulled into the story during the beginning as I had hoped and I almost DNF this title. The dialog did eventually pick up and I was more engrossed after about the mid-point. I did not love the story and I was hoping that there was more body to the premise and less tangents that the author seemed to lose themselves in. I believe that this book is a Young Adult book being hidden in a world of the Romance genre only because of the sexual dialog and situations. I hope that the second book will decide what genre it should be correctly placed in.
Neveah is a decent female character that I applaud the author for not sexualizing or making too feminine- even if she does have a love for clothes. Most of the time a female cannot be portrayed as a warrior without being manly or wearing ridiculously scant clothing that is more of a visual weapon than protection. Like 99% of female characters in video games and Wonder Woman. These characters are there to be sexualized by men otherwise only women would want to watch/play and I am glad that Neveah was not portrayed in such a manner. I did like seeing character evolve and I didn’t mind the romance though I think it could have been left out entirely and we would not have really been missing anything.
I would not recommend this book to most people. Like I said, it is a cross between New Age/Young Adult but doesn’t know how to be either one. I would have to seriously know what a friend or colleague liked to read to recommend it. I did enjoy having the pleasure to read this story and review it for Netgalley!

The way this was written was not my cup of tea. Even though the lead is young, she really came off to me as a child. The first few chapters did not draw me in, so it made it very difficult to read.
