My Review of “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” by Marilyn Simon Rothstein

OMG!! WOW!! Kudos to Marilyn Simon Rothstein , Author of “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” for such a witty, humorous, heartwarming, entertaining and wonderful story. I had my inhaler on hand, since I have found that Marilyn Simon Rothstein in my humble opinion is the “Queen of Humor” I laughed so much that I cried, and did have to use my inhaler. “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” is the book that follows “Lift and Separate”, also by Marilyn Simon Rothstein. This can be read as a stand alone, but both books are just so enjoyable. The Genres for this book are Fiction, Women’s Fiction and Humor.

Marilyn Simon Rothstein describes her colorful cast of characters as complex, complicated, quirky, dysfunctional, and mostly likable. There are some character that are a few cards short of a deck, and that makes this story more delicious. I love the way Marilyn weaves the storyline and the characters together.

The question is to commit or not commit. Marcy Hammer is now separated from her husband Harvey, the head of a global brassiere company. Harvey is now expanding into men’s briefs, and business looks really good. Harvey is really apologetic and sorry for his past mistakes, and wants Marcy back. Marcy is content in a new job, and even has a boyfriend that really makes her happy. Jon, would like more of a commitment, but Marcy is not divorced yet. Marcy has some wonderful friends that offer emotional support.

So everything is going well in Marcy’s life? What more could you ask for? It seems Marcy’s youngest daughter Amanda is getting engaged to Harvey’s attorney. Amanda’s future mother in law has some annoying issues. Suddenly Amanda has turned into “Bridezilla” and the wedding planning and choices are getting stranger. This event looks like it will be “The Wedding from Hell”, if Amanda’s older sister and brother are still speaking to her.

I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of family, friendship, friends, loyalty, love and hope. I would highly recommend this charming, delightful, humorous novel for those readers that enjoy Women’s Fiction and Humor. I received an Advanced Reading Copy of this novel from NetGalley for my honest review.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley, courtesy of the publisher and author. all opinions are my own.

Marcy Hammer is a middle-aged mama of three grown children who has recently separated from her husband. She is dealing with a new relationship and the reaction of her children to this relationship. Just as she is happy with her new love, her soon to be ex-husband wishes for reconciliation. All the while, she is helping to plan a wedding and supporting a friend through a health crisis.

I love Macy's gentle approach to parenting and her focus on listening and holding her tongue. I found myself emulating her when dealing with my own preteens! Marcy has a great sense of humor and I laughed aloud several times. This is a fast, fun read with lots of humor.

Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is the story of Marcy Hammer, her soon to be ex-husband (Harvey) and her three children (Elisabeth, Amanda and Ben). As Marcy and Harvey are ending their marriage their daughter, Amanda, is a planning her wedding to one of Harvey's attorneys, Jake. Marcy takes a lot of advice from her friends and kids when she should listen to her heart and do what feels right for her. The author ended the story in such a way that Marcy's story could continue.

This is my second book by Ms. Rothstein. I loved her first book and was so happy excited that the characters from Lift and Separate were in this one too. I loved the story as much as I loved the first book. I’m hoping for another book with this great crazy family

HUSBANDS AND OTHER SHARP OBJECTS by Marilyn Simon Rothstein is a witty and heartwarming story of friendship, love and family under unusual circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s debut novel, LIFT AND SEPARATE, and was happy to see that her next novel continued the main character Marcy’s story. Middle-aged Marcy is separated from her cheating husband Harvey and is trying hard to move on with her life. Her three children are grown and out of the house, she has a job she loves and she has a wonderful new love interest, but she is still having trouble with actually initiating a divorce and committing to a future with boyfriend, Jon. She bends over backwards to keep things amiable with Harvey and the kids, but when daughter Amanda suddenly announces she is engaged to Harvey’s attorney, things spiral out of control in the most unpredictable and hilarious ways. As family members and friends get involved with planning the wedding, all kinds of crazy things happen that had me alternatively laughing out loud and wiping away tears. The characters are real and believable and feel like friends. The author’s sharp sense of humor kept me totally engaged from start to finish. I highly recommend this fast and fun read. I am thankful to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read an early copy of this book.

Love this book. What happens when you separate from your husband but want to keep things copacetic for your adult children! This book made me laugh and get teary eyed at times. One women's exploration of what life is alike alone for the first time in thirty three years. She does a great job of figuring it out....sometimes!!

I love contemporary family drama novels, and this one definitely fit the bill. Marcy has lived her life in the shadows of her unappreciative husband Harvey, and she is ready to be on her own and live the life of her dreams. As she plans her own divorce, her daughter begins to plan her own marriage….to Harvey's divorce attorney. Cue a recipe for one dysfunctional wedding planning experience.
Parts of this book are laugh out loud funny but the ending is very heartfelt and ties the story together nicely. I definitely recommend this novel-get ready for a quick but memorable read!

Thank you to to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing (they rarely steer me wrong) and the author for an ARC of this title. I'd read the author's debut, "Life and Separate," and I hoped this could hold a tiny candle to it. The author hit another home run. The characters are some of my favorite in a long line of recently read books, and it hit home watching Marcy try to rebuild her life. Her friends and family were flawed, but pretty great as well.
I laughed, I thought and I loved it. Highly and wholeheartedly recommended.
