Honestly I love everything Jorge Ramos does and this was no different. I really enjoyed the mixing of data and his own personal experiences to tell a well rounded picture. The feeling so beautifully described in this book that of always feeling like an outsider is one we know is deeply felt in the Latinx community but it's also one I feel like can extend to other immigrants in this country. As a latina and a human, I think this book is extremely important.

Very interesting book. I requested both the Spanish and the English version, since I wanted to read both and practice my Spanish. I have read a few of Mr. Ramos' books before, and enjoy his journalistic style. This one is no exception. The only thing that I did not like as well is that he tends to repeat himself on the same issue time and time again. Still, a book worth reading, and an interesting point of view. Sad when so many can make quick judgement without taking another person's view. This book helps to show exactly that and makes you think. Highly recommend this book and author.

STRANGER by Jorge Ramos, non-fiction and subtitled "The Challenge of a Latino Immigrant in the Trump Era," makes it readily obvious where the author stands despite having lived in the United States for more than 35 years. An Emmy-award winning journalist, Ramos points out, "Almost all of us here are either immigrants or the descendants of foreigners, and that has always helped us to cross borders and exceed the limits of what we thought was possible." This work draws on statistics and points out inconsistencies in policy (asking how the deportation of 11 million people would actually work and noting that building an expensive wall does not begin to address the 40 percent of undocumented people who either come by plane or overstay their visas). Ramos also provides firsthand accounts of his encounters with Trump during press conferences and describes his own profession, saying "a journalist's primary social function is to question those in power." Ramos explains that he views himself as a public servant and that he agrees with the principle of objectivity in journalism, but argues that does not mean that a journalist should always remain neutral since neutrality sometimes runs counter to the truth itself, quoting Elie Wiesel, "Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim." STRANGER is also available en Espanol: Stranger: el desafio de un inmigrante latino an la era de Trump and was recommended for teens by Booklist due to "Ramos' direct and personal style, clear approach to urgent issues, and reflections on his youth."

I loved this book! I actually requested the Spanish and English from NetGalley in case I had trouble with the Spanish version. But in the end, I read it in Spanish. It was amazing. I'm glad I got to read it in Ramos' native language to get all of the nuances that don't come through even with the best translators in the world.

This book discussed so many of the important issues in our country today. As an immigrant, Ramos knows first hand the reasons people come here and how hard it is to live in a country that isn't your own and to learn a language that isn't your own either. I love how he shared openly the reasons he moved here. I cannot imagine living in a country where you don't have freedom of speech and I'm glad he found his position at Univision and has been able to stay so long! His descriptions of how he feels as a "Stranger" were quite poignant.

I also love that he dedicated this book to the Dreamers. Unlike Ramos they didn't choose to be immigrants. In fact, some of them were babies or very young children when they moved here.

I know that the title might lead you to think the whole book is about politics, but it isn't. And it isn't all about Trump either. Yes, both come up...but mostly it is about navigating life when you feel torn between two languages and two countries.

I highly recommend this book!

I received an advanced copy through NetGalley. This is my honest review.
