Not the life I'd choose for myself, but I do find reading about others life style choices interesting. A vicarious life for me, in most cases, suits me just fine. Over all it's a satisfying read, Dr. Black's life in Tanzania as a missionary doctor in a 3rd world country is a fascinating and easy read. Not too long of a book, but I think readers will find the contrasts between our first world society and the third very eye opening. It's not all serious tho', there is humor and just every day living and working in "bush" hospital. It's not in the least mawkish, things just are the way they are and everyone's just getting by as best they can. Worth a couple hours read!

Although the format was a little bit distracting, I enjoyed reading about a country that I will probably never have the opportunity to visit.

I found the the organization of the novel a bit off-putting. It read more like a diary with entries, although there were no dates. I would love to have seen more of a flow and structure. Also, the language was a bit offensive. He explained his use "third world", but I didn't feel it was a sufficient justification to continue using a term that isn't PC.

Disappointing, not very well written, at times condescending. I think the stories of the missionary work were interesting, but wordy describing incidentals, rather than focusing on the story. I think if it was written in a different format, it could have had potential for a good book.
