Perfectly in line with what one would expect from Tao Lin nonfiction in all the good ways and bad. No one is perfect, and neither is any book.

Ever since reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe, I’ve been interested in books where psychedelic drugs play a prominent role. Trip by Tao Lin is a wonderful addition to this literature. His pride in his relationships with these plants, and the life-altering experiences they can provide, is refreshing. His argument for legalization is compelling. This book covers many psychedelic experiences, from Cannabis and Psilocybin, to LSD and DMT, but I found it all to be interesting due to the personal nature of the book. Terence McKenna was a fascinating thinker and the section about him was well done. The author’s writing style made the chapters about his relationship to various psychedelic drugs all the more fun to read. I can’t help but chuckle when he starts going into various mathematical histories and accountings of events in his life. The final vignette about visiting Kathleen Harrison feels like a masterful short story. Highly recommended.

Tao Lin's greatest written achievement thus far shows readers a warmer, friendlier side of the author. Not to be missed.

Tao Lin continues to push the edge of brilliant writing. Absurd, absorbing, beautiful. I would definitely recommend this read.
