Who doesn't like a book with cherry pie in the title? In this book, we meet Whitney, who is baking up pies in Chicago. She is called back home when her father is suspect number one in a local murder.
This book was everything I wanted it to be and more. The author set the stage with a mystery well plot out, great writing, characters that grip you and you want to know more about them, and a beautifully written setting. This is a story you can read again and again.

Cherry Pies & Deadly Lies is the debut of the A Very Cherry Mystery series set in the small town of Cherry Cove, Wisconsin and featuring advertising executive and baker, Whitney Bloom. Having recently been fired from her job in one of Chicago's big advertising firms thanks to a feminine hygiene ad that run during the Super Bowl, Whitney has turned to running an online bakery featuring yummy cherry treats, Bloom 'n Cherries.

Whitney receives a phone call from her mother saying that the manager of the family's cherry orchard, Jeb Carlson, had been been bludgeoned to death and the weapon has been identified as a croquet mallet belonging to Whitney's father. Desperate to help clear her father's name, Whitney heads to Cherry Cove to track down a killer.

It turns out that the lead Detective on the case is Whitney's high school nemesis, Jack MacLaren. Jack has no experience investigating a murder and although he's a little over his head, he resents Whitney's interference. Tatum "Tate" Vander Hagen, her ex boyfriend, has managed to infiltrate his way into her family's good graces and Whitney's not sure if he's trying to win her back or simply distract her from finding the real killer.

A fast paced plot with plenty of twists, turns and suspects, a bit darker than a traditional cozy. A likable cast of characters although Whitney is a little too self-absorbed and man crazy. Delicious sounding and mouthwatering cherry treats will have you running to the store. Signs of the dreaded love triangle surface and I hope that the author doesn't drag it on in future installments.

Please note that I was reading an uncorrected proof, so maybe these problems will all be fixed by publication. I sort of doubt it, but it's possible.

I only made it 6% in before I couldn't take it anymore. The constant problems with spelling, usage, and grammar were enough to set my teeth on edge. ("base" instead of "bass," "rout forty-two," and "You're folks are in the family quarters," for instance) But there were bigger concerns with plot, character, and scenework. And cliches. When I got to, "Her chin quivered and her eyes glistened with unshed tears," I gave up.

Like many cozy mysteries, this one has a theme: cherries! Our protagonist, Whitney Bloom, grew up in Cherry Cove, Wisconsin on a cherry orchard living at her parents' Cherry Orchard Inn. She left home for college and an less than stellar advertiser career before dashing home to help when there's a death in the orchard.

While I really enjoyed Cherry Cove, I was less charmed with elements of the plot. Over the last 20 or so pages, for example, Whitney goes from shaking from the shock of nearly being killed (again) to going on a picnic with her best friend's love interest. The killer is revealed with a somewhat contorted motive, Whitney saves the day, and then manages to forget that she has dinner plans with person A while eating with person B. All this over the last 20 pages! She also kept ignoring good advice, getting into sticky situations and screaming way too often. True, I did appreciate she was always able to rescue herself (and the occasional drugged man with her); I just wished she acted little more intelligent (maybe a little less gleeful about heading into dangerous situations?) or at least have the situation initially presented as being less dangerous than it turned out to be.

Despite my misgivings about the plot, I really enjoyed the book. I loved Cherry Cove and some of the quirky characters - Whitney's mother, grandmother, friends, and especially McGruff. There was some fun lines - Jack's comment about having kids; the reference to the Scooby Gang (complete with some possible romantic foreshadowing??). I look forward to reading future books in the series!

Highly recommended.

Charming mystery with lots of potential as a series.

Whitney Bloom grew up in a family cherry orchard, and her career in Chicago's ad industry isn't working out the way she hoped, so she's ready when her parents ask her to come home and help with the family business. She wasn't expecting murder to be part of the deal, though.

Whitney is feisty and smart, so she jumps right into the investigation -- especially when her family look like suspects.

There are a lot of moving parts in this story. Multiple murder methods, multiple side crimes, myriad suspects, supernatural overtones -- Whitney even has three suitors to choose from. The solution to the mystery doesn't really follow from the clues and the whole story is implausible. If a tight plot is what you wnt in a mystery, this one is not for you.

If you like lots of action, plenty of local color, and a bunch of fun friends and family, though, you'll like this series. I look forward to more of Whitney's adventures.

Cherry Pies and Deadly Lies by Darci Hannah was a hilariously fun, cozy murder mystery. Whitney Bloom, former ad exec turned cherry pie baker, works intensely to prove her father innocent and solve who killed family friend Jeb. She leaves Chicago behind and heads to her hometown of Cherry Cove. There she runs into her old frenemy turned cop who she “assists” and her best friends from high school who add to delightful mix of characters. The description of the town makes me want to move to Wisconsin and the description of the pastries makes my mouth water for cherries. The delicious wit and the humorous, scary, slightly romantic scenes makes this book all that better. I seriously cannot wait for the next book to see what happens with Whitney’s romantic life and who gets murdered. If you love humorous mysteries with spectacular scenery, both men and food included, this book is right up your alley.

Cherry Pies & Deadly Lies is an entertaining book that cozy mystery fans will enjoy. It's a quick read that kept me guessing. I can't wait to read more in this series.

I enjoyed this book. The openness of Whitney's personality and the use of slang makes it feel fun & homey. I did feel like cringing at certain of her actions, (like telling her anonymous email pal all about the investigation when she knew there was a chance he was in the area) but I admire her stick-to-itness. The ending was perfect & I definitely didn't see it coming. I was given the opportunity to review an ARC of this book for NetGalley and the publisher.

This is the first in the new Very Cherry Mystery series. Whitney Bloom is living in Chicago in vain to restore her place in the advertising world after an ad placement debacle when she receives a call from her mother in Wisconsin. The manager Whitney’s parents’ orchard has been found dead and the suspected murder weapon is a croquet mallet belonging to her father. Whitney arrives home to help – not only to clear her father of charges, but also to assist with the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. While at homes she visits old haunts and sees old friends (and some fr-enemies) she hasn’t seen since high school. Can this ex-ad exec put a spin on this story to free her father and find a killer?

I loved this book. It might partly be because I live near Wisconsin and I can relate to some of the folksiness of it, but the characters are fun and relatable and the scenes are set expertly. I had some issue with what a couple of the male characters say – I just didn’t find it believable, but they are still enjoyable. The author left me wanting more of these characters and their town. I can’t wait for the next installment. I received an ARC from NetGalley to read.

Cherry Pies & Deadly Lies by Darci Hannah is a first in a new series.

Whitney Bloom has returned home to Wisconsin because her father has been accused of murder.
The story line itself was good but the love of all thing cherry was a bit over the top,

Cherry Blossom Festival has just kicked off at the Cherry Orchard Inn in Wisconsin and now that her father has become a suspect in a murder, Whitney feels she needs to solve the mystery on her own.

This is a hard book to review, I enjoyed the story and the mystery was interesting, but there was nothing that grabbed my attention. Nothing about the story screamed unique.
I will read the next book, sometimes it is easier to re read a first in a new series, there is a lot of information that an author needs to include.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

Even though I'm not a cherry fan, i really enjoyed this book set in Cherry Cove, a place that loves cherries. The main character is real, but funny. Well written story with a great setting. I'll be looking for more from this author since this is my first.

A charming mystery set in a small, lakeside Wisconsin town of Cherry Cove that LOVES cherries! I do, too, which is what drew me to this book initially, but the story, setting, and characters got me hooked 'til the end. Protagonist Whitney is realistic, loyal, and funny. When she finds her family inn at the center of a murder investigation, she's determined to find the murderer. While she pokes around for clues, she makes several foolish mistakes. As does Jack, Cherry Cove's only police officer. To be fair, he mostly has to work alone and doesn't have experience with homicide in town. The supporting characters - namely Whit's family and close friends - are likeable and I hope to learn more about them in future books. The mystery is layered and a bit complex, with several suspects and motives, so it kept me thinking and guessing to the very end. The story takes place during the Cherry Blossom Festival and there's no shortage of cherry-filled treats around town. I actually went to the store to get a cherry pie because all the foods sounded so tasty! I'm drawn into this series, and look forward to reading the next one when it comes out!

Whitney Bloom is summoned home by her mom when her dad is accused of murder in the family cherry orchard by guests of the inn. She is determined to clear her dad's name and help save the orchard and inn.

This is a new author to me but I really enjoyed the book. Since I got an ARC there were a few spelling errors and mix-ups in the spelling of the characters names but it was a really good book. The characters were great and so was the story. I wish there would have been a bit clearer decision in Whitney's love life but maybe in the next book.
