This volume of works is definitely an “encyclopedia!” The book begins by stating that there are four hundred entries along with 175 contributors from many parts of the globe! Jonathan is stated to have been a theologian, expositor of Scripture, pastor, town leader, preacher of awakenings, founder of evangelicalism, missionary to the Indians, college president, family man and a man of piety, prayer and spiritual disciplines.
Some of the topics covered by this volume are: America, Angels, antichrist, Ark of the Covenant, Biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek), Calvinism, crucifixion, Damnation, devils\demons, Charles Finney, Great Awakening, Islam, pagans, slavery, and John Wesley.
Jonathan understood things that modern Christians deal with too, he gives a description of how people’s hearts are moved when God touches them and they are engaged spiritually and they encounter God supernaturally. The topic of “Affections” deals a lot with the “Great Awakenings” of the time and how Jonathan felt that a truly regenerated person would demonstrate a change by living a truly virtuous life wherein they seek to glorify God and not a temporary change.
This book will give you a thorough theological education if you read it a section at a time and reflect on its truths.
Some of the topics discussed relate to the time period in which Jonathan lived, such as the section on America and Anti-Catholicism and other topics, which the reader will easily recognize.
Enjoy this book and its divine truths and accounts of how to live to please God and glorify Him!
