My appreciation and thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author James Alfred for the opportunity and pleasure of reading this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

THE MAN WHO CLIMBED TREES is an autobiographical recollection of a little lad who loved to climb trees for fun, and who later parlayed his passion for trees into a career as a professional photographer. The author’s word choices in describing his various adventures are excellent, the imagery vivid. Mr. Alfred’s writing is enchanting with his depictions of the people, places, and animals he encountered all over the world. I thoroughly enjoyed this “memoir”. I would have enjoyed it to a MUCH greater extent if there were photographs or even sketches of the trees he climbed. Although his descriptions are excellent, pictures or sketches would have aided this reader. However, for whatever reason, there are no photos or sketches, but that really doesn’t diminish the captivating adventures! Mr. Alfred accomplished quite a feat and gave us a treat by sharing his experiences with us!

James Aldred climbs trees for a living. He scout's out trees that provide the best camera angles.  He is part of a team that produces those nature documentaries that we all love. This book explores his relationship with trees. He narrates those episodes in his life that inspired his love of trees before outlining his journey to his current position. He then sketches some filming assignments,  giving beautifully descriptive accounts; of the trees and nature that he encountered on his journey, the extraordinary lengths that he takes to get those shots, and the sometimes nerve jangling wild encounters that happened throughout his career. Part memoir, part nature log, this book is, above all other things, a love letter to trees and the nature that they help support

James Allred is more than a “man who climbs trees”. He is a professional photographer who has made his career high up in the canopy of trees to photograph wildlife for BBC and National Geographic. His adventures are fascinating and he writes very well to place the reader with him on his adventures. What physical endurance and patience he had to develop over the years. This is a most enjoyable read about a fascinating career. A definite recommend.
