What first interest me about this book was the second-chance romance trope mixed with suspense. I was looking forward to seeing these two characters reconnecting while fighting for their lives. And although some of this reconnecting happens and there's plenty of fast-paced and action-packed scenes, the connection between Jamie and Samira wasn't really established for me to become invested in their relationship. Thankfully, the premise of the story was interesting and the writing was engaging and kept me interested in the outcome of the conflict.

All in all, an okay read with plenty of action and suspense.

My review was originally posted on Romancing-the-Book.com and is shown below:

Kelly is a new to me author not having read the previous books in the Legionnaires series since I didn’t know A Risk Worth Taking was part of one. As I got into the book I realized there was a lot of background information I was missing. While some of it was slipped in during the telling there was a lot that wasn’t which made it a more difficult read.

The story is a romantic suspense and starts out in Tuscany where Samira is isolated and has been in hiding. While she is forced to run again she has no idea what she’ll be up against with few people to support her or for her to turn to and trust. Jamie, her one night stand from a year ago, becomes her knight in shining armor or does he, when she gets herself to London. He has his own demons that he’s battling and does a good job of hiding them or does he? Samira has panic attacks and not at the most opportune moments.

The descriptions of the land, the homes and hotel along with the chases, the deception, the crimes and criminal elements made me feel like I was there – whether in Tuscany, London or Scotland! Taking down a major American politician isn’t easy. There’s a lot of cyber intrigue going on that was sometimes difficult to follow not only by me but Jamie too. My heart was often in my throat not knowing what would happen next. Would the good guys be able to keep one step ahead of the bad guys or are they outplayed and out numbered? There’s family and friends, colleagues, injuries, intrigue, fear, sadness, anger, hurt, accents, truths and lies along with some romance and even love. The story flowed smoothly for the most part except where I was missing key information. There is some closure but the book ended too abruptly for me. I would have loved an epilogue unless there are to be more books in the series.

I look forward to reading the other books in the Legionnaires series and hope I get the background information I’m looking for.

When computer expert Samira Desta's fiancé was murdered after turning whistleblower against his employer it threw Samira into the middle of a conspiracy with world-changing ramifications and put her in the crosshairs of a very powerful, and dangerous, man. She's been in hiding in a cottage in Tuscany for the past year, separated from family and friends, with paranoia increasing each month she's on her own until a postcard from her college roommate arrives with a coded message that hints at new evidence against the man who wants her dead. A narrow escape in Tuscany sends Samira straight for her friend in London, desperately hoping she finds her before the bad guys, but events take a turn for the worse upon arrival and help comes from the last person she expects to see.

French Foreign Legionnaire Jamie Armstrong spent an unforgettable night with Samira before she went into hiding a year ago. The connection between them was strong but it was clear she was still deeply grieving her fiancé and not yet ready to move forward. Not that Jamie was either. There's a good reason he holds people at a distance, discouraging all close relationships, even with his family. The last place he wants to be is back in England, or even worse, Scotland but when the call goes out that Samira is in trouble, he's the first to answer. The attraction between them is as strong as ever but Samira hasn't yet put her past relationship to rest and Jamie has secrets he's sure will bring any possibility of a future with Samira to a screeching halt. Not to mention, they're now in the fight of their lives against a high-profile villain with unlimited resources at hand. Will they find their way to each other? Will Samira be able to move forward and claim happiness a second time? Will Jamie put his demons to rest? And, most importantly, will they uncover the evidence they need to put a stop to the man who wants Samira dead before it's too late?

Brynn Kelly has penned another intense, breath-stealing, romantic suspense thriller that kept me reading far into the night. Filled with intrigue and suspense, this is a story high on action with no shortage of "boom." Kelly excels at creating atmosphere and a sense of time and place. I didn't so much read this story as live it along with the characters. And speaking of characters, Kelly gives us a complex, multi-faceted hero and heroine with strength, vulnerability, and plenty of emotional baggage to sort through. I enjoyed them and their journey. The story flows well, with vividly drawn characters on both sides. It was fun to catch up with characters from the previous two books who play key roles in this one, working with Jamie and Samira to bring down the villain. And speaking of the villain, Kelly does an admirable job of keeping readers guessing what will happen until the very end when she throws in a twist that I didn't see coming at all. I love when that happens!

Jamie and Samira's story plays out completely in this book and so, from a romance perspective, the book stands well on its own. The villain, however, is introduced in book one with the suspense plot evolving over the course of all three books. Because of that, for a deeper appreciation and better understanding of all aspects of the story, I encourage readers to read the three books in order: Deception Island (read my review), Edge of Truth, and A Risk Worth Taking. Kelly's 2017 novella, Forbidden River (a 2018 RITA® finalist) is loosely connected to the Legionnaire's series but not part of the conspiracy that plays out in the trilogy.

I wasn’t aware this book was part of a series until I started reading the book. Despite this I enjoyed the book and it was easy to read as a stand alone.

I want to say that Brynn Kelly had me at "hacker," but she didn't. While the premise of the book is exciting and had promise, it took me a while to get hooked. All the right elements are there: a legionnaire (soldier) looking for redemption, a (female) hacker, and a deadly conspiracy ... shazam! Right? The pacing lagged in spots, and I am certain I should've read the two preceding books in order to be in the know. I like Kelly's voice, and look forward to reading more from her.

The Legionnaires Series
Samira Desta has been on the run from people who want to silence her, one way or another. She is a hacker. She has a secret that has already killed her fiance.

Now they have found her again. She makes a single call then heads toward the one person who can help her. Only as she arrives, she sees that help being led away in handcuffs.

Their goal is to expose a powerful Senator, to put a stop to his plans to run for President. Corrupt, willing to kill to win, he has already committed crimes against the country. Jamie and Samira must stay under his radar, until she can expose the truth. That is the only way she will be free again.

Political Intrigue
It took a little while to connect with the story, but it soon became an intriguing mystery with plenty of twists and turns. The outspoken senator is able to misdirect and stop investigations. How far will Samira go to expose him? At what cost?

A test of strength against outside forces definitely, but it is also a test within, for both Samira and Jaime. How long will they fight the attraction they feel toward the other.

If you enjoy romantic suspense, you should like Brynn Kelly. Fast paced, complex suspense, with clever dialogue and characters you will appreciate.

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I just learned this was the third in a series. I may have enjoyed it more had I read the others, but still. I was able to follow what was going on.
I don't read a lot of romance books. They kind of drive me crazy....pages and pages of he wanted her..she wanted him. Ugh!! Now if you like that, this will be wonderful for you! As far as action goes, lots of that and more, which I loved and was not badly written. The plot was very on the edge of your seat interesting! The characters were not bad although I think could be a little fuller developed. I'm giving this a 3 but I did like it.

A Risk Worth Taking was jam packed with actions, twists, turns and guns. I have to admit at first it took me a while to get into the story, it was very descriptive and all about the action line, but as soon as things got real and Jamie appeared, it got way more interesting, and soon I was immersed in the story and dying to know the truth about everything.

Jamie and Samira already had a past; they had met once before and shared a night together that both of them never forgot, even in the midst of the chaos that was their lives. It was so fun to watch them hanging out and trying to fight the attraction between them and those feelings that were there. I loved watching them realize, little by little, that they wouldn't be able to say goodbye and turn their backs on each other once again.

When it comes to the action, it surprised me how much I ended up enjoying it. Yes, it's true I probably wouldn't have liked it much if there wasn't romance in the book, but there was and I ended up really enjoy it. There were twists and turns at every page, and it got more interesting at every flip of the page and with each new clue or secret unveiled. In the end, I was very pleasantly surprised and the unveiling of that last secret, WOAH! It got everyone shook, including me ahah.

If you enjoy the combo of action and romance, you'll probably love this book! So pick it up and then let me know if you enjoyed it or not, xo.

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

When I first accepted this book I knew it was part of a series, but was assured that it read well as a standalone. I’m not sure I can entirely agree with that. For a good chunk of the early part of the book I had trouble understanding what was going on. Why was Samira is hiding? What was she hiding from? Who was coming after her? There were a lot of references to something that had previously happened that I had no idea about. A little more background would have been helpful in my opinion.

I don’t read a lot of romantic suspense. So I was pleasantly surprised that there was a little more suspense than romance. I found it to be a really good balance for my personal tastes. But I fear that people who prefer more romance in their romantic suspense will not be as pleased.

Overall the book was an exciting and thrilling ride! The pacing was really good, it kept my attention throughout. My one and only complaint is that I felt I needed a little more background at the beginning of the book. It did finally come together, but a little more info would have been better. This was a good book and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Kelly’s books in the future!

Recommended.

I was given a free electronic copy of this book by NetGalley for an honest review.

This is a fast paced action romance. Action romance is not a frequent read of mine however I did enjoy this story. It moves quickly, the dialogue is engaging and the storyline keeps your interest. After reading this I learned it is third in a series. I did not feel it needs to be read in series order but supports itself well as a stand alone. If you enjoy action packed scenes with some steam, this is a book you’ll enjoy!

Samira Desta is hiding out in Italy from a United States senator after he launched a terrorist attack on Los Angeles, killings thousands. He targeted her fiancé as the terrorist and had him murdered. Now she's hiding out, trying to gather the information she needs to take the senator down. She's sworn off all things electronic and relies only on snail mail to communicate. Sometimes that takes months.

When Samira receives a postcard from a friend to come to Great Britain for information Samira makes plans to go. But her plans are hurried, as the senator's thugs find her in the middle of the night, and she has to make a quick get-away. After making it through passport control in Britain with a fake ID, Samira finds herself being hauled away on a gurney by paramedics when a smoke bomb explodes at the train station. She fears for her life but soon learns that it is Jamie Armstrong, a French Legionnaire who rescued her in Africa after her fiancé was killed.

Samira and Jamie set out to find her friend, but their search gets very complicated. Their journey leads them through several neighborhoods and streets in London and then on to Edinburg. Sometimes they are moving at their own pace, and sometimes they are being chased at breakneck speeds. Can they find the information they need before the senator's thugs find them?

Brynn Kelly brings us her third book in her Legionnaires series, A RISK WORTH TAKING, which will leave you panting for breath as your turn the pages. The story is filled with intrigue, riveting action, and dangerous romantic attraction. The characters are intense and very realistic, even exposing their flaws. The storyline captures you on page one and won't let go, moving in many unexpected directions. This is a story about ordinary people whose circumstances turn really weird. It's about overcoming your fears and not letting the present dictate your future. A RISK WORTH TAKING should definitely be on your to-read list for this summer!

Review:

Fast paced and don't blink or you will miss something book.

This is my first book in this series and by this Author. It was expertly written and had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. Like I said this is the first in the series I had read and while I was not totally lost, I think I would have enjoyed the story more by reading the other books first. I did like Samira and Jamie, both are extremely likeable, smart and capable. I especially liked the exciting ending of the story.

3.5Stars
*I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher.*

A wild ride from start to finish, the whole premise was also quite scary. Could it actually happen? Samira was a strong character who didn’t realize her strengths, especially after she was thrown into a situation not of her making. I loved how smart she was. Jaime was a perfect complement to her, helping her get out of some situations, while her strength got him out of others. This is part of a series, which I didn’t realize initially, but it didn’t hinder my enjoyment in any way, it just made me want to go back and find out more about the other characters. I am also curious as to whether there will be a next book, because I can see a couple characters that deserve a more detailed story.
This was a really enjoyable read and I flew through the pages. The characters were well-written and the story line was one I could immerse myself in. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys strong, smart characters and a fast-paced story.

This was a fast-paced and intense book that was so much fun to read! In fact, I had a hard time putting it down until I was done with it. There were a lot of characters introduced in the book that I knew they must have been from back stories that I hadn't read and came to find out that this was the 3rd installment in the Legionnaires series. It can definitely be read as a stand alone even though it is part of the series, although the characters did intrigue me and made me want to read their stories.

Samira has been in hiding for over a year, running for her life, and the anxiety and fear that she experiences is well conveyed to the reader. The fact that she is so computer savvy is an integral part of the story. As she is drawn back to the UK by a post card she receives, she runs into Jamie Armstrong, an acquaintance from her time in hiding. Jamie is a French Foreign Legion soldier and has thrown himself into the Legion as a way to atone for his past sins. The connection he has with Samira, to keep her safe, is revealed in more detail through out the story.

I loved the way the author was able to keep me speculating about what was going to happen, and the fact that those guesses weren't always totally correct, right up until the end, kept me riveted on the story. I enjoyed the story line and characters so much that I purchased the first 2 installments in the Legionnaire series.

I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review from Net Gallery. Subsequently I have already purchased my own copy of the book and will read it again in the order of the books in the series.

A Risk Worth Taking is not my normal genre to read, but I'm glad I expanded my horizons with this romantic thriller. It is not just the story of a damsel in distress, who is rescued by her prince that she previously sent away after one night. That damsel, Samira, a technology genuis, is being chased by the future President's henchmen because she has information that could destroy him. Her prince, Jamie, a surgeon turned solider, has a secret past, slowly revealed to her as they travel through London and Scottland to avoid capture and concrete their information on Hyland, the future President. Will they survive long enough to clear Samira's name and provide the proof to the public of Hyland's wrong doings? What will happen when they are brought back together again and realize their true feelings?

I loved this book. I love the realistic and flawed characters. I was cheering for Samira and Jamie to come together again and survive and thrive together. I had no idea it was the third in a series until I started to write this review. I'm hoping there will be a fourth, so I can see their love story continue. Thick as the fog on the loch they end up taking cover by, the suspense kept me turning pages way past my bedtime. For me, this was a perfect blend of several of my favorite genres.

Whew! I’ll admit this book had a sort of slow start for me, although it was still interesting. However, as I got further along in the story line I couldn’t put it down and ended up finishing it in one day!

A Risk Worth Taking quickly became a riveting page turner that kept me on edge. Filled with drama and action until the very end, we see just how far you have to go to expose the truth.

I love how well written this book is! The conversation flows seamlessly and the more sensual scenes were just enough to paint a picture without making the storyline turn into erotica.

This is one of the best romantic suspense novels I have read in a while, and I would definitely recommend this to lovers of the genre.

OK, I wasn't sure what to expect with this one.  It seemed like a great book for Memorial Day Weekend wrap up so I asked for it through Netgalley.  I'm really impressed.  This one had me hooked from the first page.  The action is nonstop.  I only put it down because I had a motorcycle rally this weekend and a few other Memorial Day events to go to.

I'm not going to rehash the blurb, you can read that above.  But I will tell you one thing, this is not your typical military story, it isn't the U.S. military.  She writes about the French "Foreign" Legion as we call them here in the U.S.  She gives a little bit of the mission of the Legionnaires throughout the book, but the Corporal she uses in her book is on leave the whole time, so it mainly talks about his skill set more than the Legionnaires as a whole.  Her research seems pretty solid though and I like the world-wise hero she creates.  She complements him with a reluctantly world-wise heroine.  To say Samira would rather not be world-wise is an understatement, but she rises above the challenges she's given with great strength and humanity.

This book takes you all over Europe on a roller-coaster of action adventure, from computer hacking, to train hopping, to camera dodging, to Secret Service impersonation, the ride doesn't look like it's going to end.  You do get your HEA finally, but it still has a long way to go for both of them just as any love story does.

I'm giving this 5 of 5 propellers because it is going to stay with me long after reading and it had all the elements I love; HEA and no cliff hanger!!!  I will definitely have to catch up on this series with the first two.  I can't wait to see what Brynn comes up with next for us.

A Risk Worth Taking by Brynn Kelly is book Three in the Legionnaires series. This is the story of Jamie Armstrong and Samira Desta. I haven't yet read the previous books, so for me this was a standalone book.
Jamie and Samira had met once before when they had a passionate night but due to the ongoing risk to her she was moved and she hasn't seen him since. Jamie is now responsible for Samira after her hiding has become at risk. There has been allot these two have went through to get to their on story.
This was a action packed romance read for sure.
