This was a page-turner that kept me on the edge of my seat! I prefer series books, and was surprised by how much darker this book was when compared the first in the series. This one can definitely be read as a standalone, even though the other characters are mentioned there isn't really anything to tie the two together. All in all an entertaining read that you would be sorry if you missed.

With Dana Marton, each book is radically different: characters, histories and backstories, all of it and it’s this kind of unpredictability that makes Marton a compelling writer. In fact, ‘Threat of Danger’ is nothing like its predecessor (save the good writing), is only very marginally linked to it and a solid standalone in its own right.

‘Threat of Danger’ is in essence, a whodunnit mystery that builds up to the revelatory moment and it’s closer to a typical ‘crime’ story rather than a military one that I’d expected. Jess/Derek’s story unfolds slowly, almost painfully as the memories return, the irrational blame that Jess places on Derek for their ordeal in the woods a decade ago coming to light as she’s forced to revisit her hometown. Jess’s family business of sugaring fascinated me, as did Marton’s deliberate but unusual pairing of a stuntwoman who lives on adrenaline highs (yet stays anonymous) and a retired SEAL who’s now a bestselling thriller writer.

Jess’s and Derek’s story is also a second-chance one that, because of the circumstances laid out, is more or less a believable one, though it does seem as though Jess and Derek come together incidentally because of her return. This pairing would absolutely not have existed otherwise save for the hand of fate so to speak, and the quick fall back in love (was it ever?) felt a mite bit forced, especially over the few weeks that Jess stayed.

The biggest issue I have is the perp’s (somewhat weak) motivation for committing crimes which didn’t entirely make too much sense, but then again, should there really be expecting a solid, logical reason for characters doing what they do? Maybe. Nonetheless, I would have liked to be more convinced about the deeper, more twisted psychological rationale behind the string of serial killings that the perp committed at least, particularly in a story that’s all about shoring up the moments until the momentous climax.

There’s no doubt that Dana Marton’s writing is thrilling, her opening scene superbly crafted, as dreaded anticipation cuts the knife edge of a vague menace that we never quite find out about. That much I knew from the prologue that I’d better buckle in for the ride that awaited me and I was right. 'Threat of Danger' is engrossing, compelling and thankfully, filled with mature characters (some of whom act as tragic parallels to Jess/Derek’s relationship) who add rather than detract from the entire storytelling. It’s in all, an entertaining read that had the time passing without me even knowing it, and I finished the book moist with anticipation with what else Marton has up her sleeve in the rest of this series.

Threat of Danger is the second romantic suspense book in the Mission Recovery series written by author Dana Marton. Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the advance copy.

Technically this is the second book in the Mission Recovery series. However, the books are completely different from one another and really the only thing linking them is the fact that Derek was in the same unit as the hero in the first book. This book has a definite dark edge but was a wonderful novel of romantic suspense.
Ten years ago, Jess and Derek were the victims of a madman you raped and tortured Jess while forcing Derek to watch. Fast forward ten years and Jess is now a stuntwoman determined to never be caught unprepared again. While Derek went on to become a SEAL. Now for the first time, both are back home and neither have fully recovered from their ordeal or completely moved on with their lives. Even worse, it seems that the madman is still kidnapping women.
Dana Marton has written a great story that immediately sucked me in. It was just one of those novels that you hate to put down until you're finished.

There may be some triggers that some may find uncomfortable in this book: Rape, sexual assault, abduction, survivor guilt. However, this is an exceptionally well written story dealing with past traumas and highly worth sitting to read all in one go!

Jess loved Derek from afar when she was a teenaged. The eponymous boy next door, he finally notices her and on a date they are abducted. After a horrific 3 days Derek finally manages to get loose and rescues Jess. But with all she has been through Jess can't unlink Derek from her nightmare and as soon as she can she leaves town, never to return.

Fast forward a few years and Derek has been invalided out from the Navy and Jess is now an in demand stuntwoman. But when she is forced to go home to look after her injured mother, Jess is forced to face her past and all that it dredges up. But when she becomes of aware of new abductions having taken place, Jess wonders if her nightmare is as over as she thought it was!

Jess and Derek both suffer from the torture they shared. Derek never feels that he did enough to save her and Jess refuses to be anyone's victim again, but that also means never letting anyone into her tightly controlled world either.

Great mix of edge of your seat thriller romance and suspense. The secondary characters all have a purpose, some sadder than others and I loved trying to untangle the web the author wove!

Although this is the 2nd book in the series they are stand-alone and there is no crossover characters or storylines.

**I received a copy of Threat of Danger from Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review**

Threat of Danger by Dana Marton is the second book in her Mission Recovery series. Each book is a stand alone so it doesn't need to be read in order. This book will however really have you thinking not only for the heroine's kidnapping and assault but also that she wasn't able to get the authorities to believe her or her then boyfriend how scary is that? I give the book 4.6 stars as it was very realistic.

Jess Taylor is a stunt woman on movie sets but when she receives a call that her mother is in the hospital with a fractured hip she does the one thing that she doesn't want to do return back to Taylorville, Vermont. Even though it was 10 years ago the memories are still with her of her kidnapping and rape. But her family needs her to help with the maple harvest as well as help with her mother. Little does she know that her high school boyfriend has returned also Derek Daley or that the masked man has returned to kidnap and kill the young girls again. Can she and Derek escape him again when he comes for one of Jess's family?

Derek Taylor is now a mystery writer as well as a former Navy SEAL but his one regret will always be what happened her Jess Taylor 10 years ago. But he's in the middle of a new book and also trying to help out Rose Taylor, her foreman and best friend. When Jess returns home to help with the maple syrup harvest and her mother but can he keep his research and book from her without causing her pain? Because he knows the same man is still hurting teenage girls in town and this time he wants to finally catch him not only for Jess but himself.

Threat of Danger was another great sexy and suspensful novel! The characters were very likeable, and the twists and turns kept you glued to the book. I love a second change romance, and this one was swoon-worthy. I can't wait for the next book!

This the first book I have read from Dana Marton and it certainly will not be the last. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat with plenty twists in the plot to keep you interested.

The story centre's on Jess and Derek who were childhood sweethearts with a horrendous past. They were kidnapped by a serial killer. as teenagers and narrowly escaped. Traumatised from the ordeal they leave and go their separate ways. Jess has become a very successful Hollywood stunt woman and Derek a Navy Seal and famous author. When Jess is called back home they reconnect and deal with their emotional past while tracking down the serial killer who is still hunting.

Do not read Threat of Danger in the dark unless you want the hair raised on the back of your neck. Heck, the hair on your arms may raise, too. This is a creepy story deftly told by Dana Marton, and it is one of the best I've read this year. You need to add this to your pre-order list right now.

Jess hasn't gone home in ten years. She wouldn't go home now except that her mom has fallen and is in the hospital. And even though she was ready to tell her mom "no," somehow she found herself agreeing to return to the place that is the basis of all of her nightmares. Her only comfort is that Derek, her childhood crush her who shared her nightmares, won't be there because he, too, left home long ago.

Except Derek is back. And home really is home no matter how much Jess wishes that she could turn her back on her heritage. And the nightmare hasn't ended; instead, it seems to be continuing. Jess wants to escape it, but at the same time, she wants to lure out the monster who is preying on teenage girls.

I started reading this on a work night and ya'll...I looked HAGGARD the next morning and I yawned all day because I could not stop reading this book. Well, that and I didn't want to turn off the light. I can say this...the next time a Dana Marton book is released, I will hit that "pre-order" button on Amazon so fast that I'll look like a game show contestant pouncing on a buzzer.

Threat of Danger is a dark, suspenseful story filled with pain, hurt, and hope. Pain and hurt on Jess's part from never quite overcoming the trauma of her youth, and hope for Derek as he tries to make amends and reconnect with Jess.
This is a difficult review for me to write because honestly, I read all of the book. I skipped a few chapters between chapters seventeen and twenty-four. It got to a point where I had a hard time with Jess, kipped towards the end, and read the last two chapters and epilogue to see how Jess and Derek ended up. I wanted to know who the bad guy was too because I was suspicious of everyone who crossed my path as I read. That was it. I tried and I tried, but Jess was a struggle to endure. And yet I still gave it four stars, why? Because despite my difficulty with the book, it's stunningly well written, and it's compelling. As much as I didn't want to keep reading at some points, I was sucked into it. I felt pulled along by Ms Marton's excellent writing until I finally snapped because I couldn't take anymore of Jess's negativity. Ms Marton writes phenomenal suspense.
Let me break it all down for you. For starters, this is a second chance romance, and I'm not a fan of that particular trope. It's probably one of my least favorite tropes in the entire romance genre. And it had a serial killer in it which my weak constitution couldn't handle. I skipped all the bits that focused on the serial killer and what was happening to his latest victim. But I picked the book up anyway, why? Because I'm a huge fan of Ms Marton's writing and I knew she'd spin an awesome tale. I thought, since external factors caused Jess and Derek's separation, perhaps it would not be as bitter and antagonistic as if they actually had a relationship that broke up, and all the things that come along with a bad break-up that I do not like. Only I underestimated Jess and the pain and hurt she still carried around.
After escaping captivity and torture by a serial killer, Jess ran from her childhood home and town. It's totally understandable to want to put the past as far behind as possible. Jess has reinvented herself as a kickasc stunt woman - strong, competent, capable. Only, she's never really put her past behind her. It lurks there waiting to rear its ugly head. It does so at the very first opportunity when she's called home to care for her mother. All the trauma, all the pain, all the hurt, the feeling of helplessness comes rushing back at Jess, and it's too much to deal with. Even as she is back home helping out, a part of her is running away again. What frustrated me was each time I thought Jess was making progress, there'd be a setback. It happened over and over again. She'd run. She'd shut people out. She'd shut Derek out. When Derek does something she considers unforgivable, she refuses to listen to his explanation, and she shuts him out. I got tired of the emotional and denial cycle that was Jess. I understood her and her motivations, but I didn't have to like it. I wanted to be sympathetic towards her because of what she had suffered, but she didn't make it easy for me. For a supposedly strong woman, I felt she stuck her head in the sand a lot. I lost count the number of times she pushed Derek away or thought about running again. After it happened one too many times, I'd had it. I felt it was time for Jess and I to part ways.
**She hated when she felt this tense. She was never like this anymore. Except, coming back, she felt like a helpless girl once again, broken, either pitied or blamed or both—a victim.
**She didn’t even fully understand what had gotten to her this badly, enough so once again she felt the overwhelming urge to run. Maybe the little voice in her head was right, and she was overreacting. But she didn’t seem to be able to stop herself. In LA, she was a strong and confident woman. Yet by coming back here, she’d lost her footing. She felt as if she’d been smacked right back into the past. She felt as if all her fears and insecurities and pain had hung around Taylorville, preserved, waiting for her return. The urge to flee was just as strong as it had been a decade ago.
**“I know who I am in LA. I don’t know who I am here.” Derek held her gaze. “You’re the strongest woman I know. Wherever you go, that goes with you, Jess.” God, she wanted to believe him. But the trip home had knocked her sideways in more ways than one. The past still lived here.
Derek is a survivor too. He was kidnapped by the serial killer along with Jess, but he didn't suffer as badly as Jess did. Nonetheless, he was equally traumatised. After their escape, he left town and became a Navy SEAL. The biggest, baddest, toughest Navy SEAL he could be, and he was. For many, many years, until an injury ended his career. And now he's home as a successful, bestselling author. Where Jess ran from her past, Derek decided to embrace it. He reconnected with his roots and made a life for himself. He carries a tremendous amount of guilt around for what happened to him and Jess, and in his own way (I won't spoil it) he's trying to make amends. I admired the way Derek integrated back into life in his hometown, helping his neighbours, caring for the people who meant something for him, and getting on with his life. I didn't feel as though the past had as strong a hold on him as it did Jess. Perhaps it's because he didn't suffer as much. Perhaps it's because he's a guy and he processes things differently. I don't really know. What I do know is that Derek has his eye on the future and was intent on making a life for himself. And he wanted Jess in that life. I admired him for it.
**He’d been an overeager college boy. He was a man now. And he knew what he wanted. He wanted Jess safe, and he wanted her back in his arms. Nothing had ever felt as right as having her there. He was going to work on making that happen again.
**Derek was ... He took care of everyone without expecting anything in return. He was willing to defend her with his life.
While this is the second book in the Mission Recovery series, it can be read entirely as a standalone. Apart from Derek being mentioned in passing in the first book, none of the characters from the first book appear in Threat of Danger. A word of warning though. This book is a lot darker than the first one.
If you have a strong stomach and icky serial killers don't phase you, and can handle a heroine like Jess, I think you might enjoy this book because it is a stellar piece of writing. I'm definitely going to read the next book in the series and will cross my fingers that it's not a second chance romance and it doesn't have a serial killer in it.

Threat Of Danger by Dana Marton is an amazing romantic suspense/second chance romance. Kudos to Ms. Marton for being able to actually raise the hair on the back of my neck while reading this book. Derek and Jess were captured in the woods. Derek was tied up and forced to witness Jess being raped and tortured. Years later stuntwoman Jess has to return to her hometown when her mother breaks her hip, where she can't avoid thriller author Derek. Jess and Derek's story is packed with action, suspense, humor, sizzle, drama and that little something that gives you chill bumps. I loved this book from cover to cover and look forward to my next book by Dana Marton. Threat Of Danger is book 2 of the Mission Recovery Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The mystery was quite intriguing and realistic woven into a great plot. The characters were strong, vulnerable, funny and interesting with a strong development that included strong female characters. It's great to see female character emerge as a strong character rather than some weak-kneed waif who needs to be rescued or written as a damsel in distress. I can not wait to see what the next book in this series brings! You definitely do not have to read the entire series to enjoy this book, but I will say that you would be missing out as this is an excellent series with strong, well developed characters.

Exciting is one of the words to describe this book. There is intrigue, drama, heartbreak and romance and a large dose of evil. This is an excellent read and now ties my other favorite Dana Marton book “Girl in the Water”. I guessed who the bad guy was about half way into the story, but was not absolutely sure until the end. There is a disturbing quality to the story that makes this a truly excellent read. On an other note “stuntwomany” is my favorite word. Excellent read.

A prologue that leaves you with fearful apprehension. The unease you feel as you wait for the author to fully explain what happened ten years ago to the main characters. And as the story move forward you felt the sense of foreboding again, knowing the unseen danger was coming back to finish what was started all those years ago.

I received an arc from Netgalley. A second chance at love and overcoming a dark past is the story of Jess and Derek.

Years ago Jess and Zeke had new love but a masked man kidnapped them both and tortured Jess. Being young and not knowing how to get past the humiliation and unwanted attention both fled their home to try to escape.

Years later Derek now an author realizes the kidnapper is still around and may be torturing and killing other girls. Jess comes back for a family medical issue and the killer comes back for Jess.

This book will leave you on the edge of your seat. Definitely 4.5 stars

Stuntwoman Jessica Taylor has come home, the last place she wants to be. Too many bad memories. Her Mother has broken her hip and she has no choice. Ten years ago she and a neighbor boy, Derek, were kidnapped. Taylor was tortured and raped while Derek was forced to watch. They managed to escape. Jessica isn’t convinced the kidnapper is dead and is afraid missing girls from the area are connected to her case. Everyone including law enforcement blows her off.

Jessica has never resolved the kidnapping in her life. She blames Derek, even tho she knows he was as much a victim as she was. Coming home will force her to deal with her past and the fact she didn’t feel like she was supported the way she should have been. The ending caught me completely off guard. This is a great romantic suspense read. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Yet, how could she when she learns high school boyfriend is back too – resulting in the memories flooding back, the kidnapping; torture, and above all the feelings for Derek, attraction she thought were gone.
Derek Daley, former Navy Seal knows their kidnapper is still alive and is doing his best to prove it when another murder takes place. With danger for not only Jess, but those they love at stake, they both try to find him before he strikes again.
