Although the title is a little misleading – I expected the book to be a more intimate portrait of Klimt, with the emphasis on him literally “at home” in a domestic setting – it is nevertheless a marvellous introduction and overview of the man and his art. Beautifully illustrated, with many photographs, the book is a thoughtful exploration of his work as well as an exploration of the background to his art and the artistic milieu in which he flourished. I’m surprised that it has so few reviews – at the time of writing (November 2019) there are only 4 on Amazon, and not many more on Goodreads – as it deserves far more attention. It’s an intelligent and illuminating work, well-researched and well-written, and essential reading for any art lover.

Klimt is a remarkable character, and this book brings that out. An involving read, from which I learned a lot.

A beautifully illustrated biography of Klimt and his homes in Austria. The biography is a good over view of the artist and well written. I really enjoyed reading the stories behind the paintings. The illustrations are the real stars here. Anyone with an interest in art and Klimt will enjoy reading and looking at this book

I am a fan of Klimt's life--that entire epoch in Viennese society is fascinating--and work. Because of this I did not love this book. It did not offer up any new insights, photographs, or artwork. However, Klimt neophytes might enjoy learning about the great artist which is why I am acquiring a copy for my classroom library.

This is a bit hard to review because even though I am a huge fan of Klimt's work - this is my first book read about him!

I liked that the book focused a lot on the historical context around Vienna and the artists of those times, because that is what art history is for me.

But at the same time - and I will go a bit on rant here which I don't usually do on my reviews (especially for the books I receive for this purpose), I really did not like the parts where the author was trying to impose his ideas on the reader.

I think a historian author should present the facts. If the reader wants to make some conclusions based on Alma’s diary and Klimt’s letter then that’s fine, but the author shouldn’t defend the artist or manipulate the reader. Or maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like someone to dictate what I should think of a situation.

But this was only in the beginning. When discussing Klimt’s art and evolution, he kept mainly to the facts which I appreciate - except when the author made assumptions, but those aren’t as annoying as manipulating the reader’s opinion.

Overall, the book felt a bit dry and uneven. However, I did like it because it was my first book on Klimt and I obviously learned new things I did not know about him or Vienna.

**Thank you to Netgalley & Quarto Publishing Group for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review**

This book didn't delve in to the story of Gustav Klimt as much as I would have hoped. With the title, "Gustav Klimt at Home," I expected a much more intimate style of writing through more references to personal letters or any documentations that could be found. Instead I found certain parts of the text more heavily focused on who and what may have influenced Klimt and not so much about him, hidden secrets or personal stories. The title threw me off and the overall flow of the book wasn't as cohesive as I was used to reading with art related texts.

As a lover of Klimt's art, I was interested to read this gorgeous book about his life and surroundings. It's beautifully illustrated with photographs of the artist, his models and friends, and shows his studio and home plus Vienna as it was in his era. This is a lovely coffee-table book which gives some insight into the man and the times he lived in.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.

Whilst a simply adore anything by Gustav Klimt, I know very little about him, his life, his friends and his inspiration. This book, half coffee table, half reading book, goes a long way in introducing me to him and his life. Very well written, easy to read with absolutely fantastic artwork and photos. Anyone interested I Klimt should really read this book.

What a fabulous book. Full of interesting facts about Klimt and so much I didn’t know. The author has certainly done his research and wow! The photographs are fantastic. This is a book I must see in the flesh and I will certainly be buying a copy for my coffee table.

---I read this book from NetGalley UK in exchange for a fair review.---

A nice coffee table book about the painter’s famous works and his influences. More importantly it is a historical context of his personal (his early life is written in detail) and professional life, not a biography per se. As such, this is a book to complement one’s understanding of Klimt’s creative work.

I particularly enjoyed the preparatory drawings and wanted to see more!

Beautiful look at Gustv Klimt's art and life. I love the exploration of his different works - of course The Kiss is famous but his other work is so beautiful and the influence of music and his life in Vienna is a fascinating element to understand his style and details.

A well laid out book. I enjoyed the mix of biography and art. It was just the right blend to give insights on his work. As for the art, I was not familiar with Klimt and enjoyed his portraits and landscapes.

This illustrated book encapsulates Klimt's life, art, lovers, and acquaintances in fin-de-siècle Vienna.
