This is the first book by Ms. White that I have read, but it will not be my last (in fact I cannot wait until the second book in this series comes out). This book is set post-Civil War in Mississippi. This book is about a family of three sisters, but this book focuses on Selah. After a series of unfortunate circumstances, Selah encounters Levi Riggins (who is actually a Pinkerton Agent). Levi is actually investigating for a case which intertwines with Selah. Throughout this story, I did not want to put the book down! I am looking forward to reading Jolene’s story after meeting her in this book. I highly recommend this historical novel! I promise you will not be disappointed!
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, this is my own opinion.

I would give this book more than five stars if I could! I loved this book! I liked Selah and her determination and how she cared for everyone while carrying a hurt from the war. Levi has a love for his job but has a big heart for those around him. I loved the romance of the story plus way everyone regardless of race worked together. The author showed how forgiveness can come about only through God. This story will wrap its self around your heart and just make you feel good. A definite must read for all!

Beth White is a relatively new author for me, and she did not disappoint. A Rebel Heart had all the elements one looks for in a historical romance and keeps you reading until the wee hours of the morning.

The novel is set during the reconstruction era of the Civil War in the South and it starts off with excitement and an extraordinary way for our two main characters to meet - a train wreck. Levi Riggins is a Yankee undercover Pinkerton agent whose investigation leads him to Southern Belle Selah Daughtry. After rescuing her from the train wreck, Levi discovers that most of the clues to his investigation are somehow leading back to Selah and her sisters.

I loved the interaction between the two main characters and the added elements of danger in this novel. Their love story was something you wondered would ever happen due to all the secrets Levi had to keep. The author has done her research into the era, and it makes you feel like you are there (especially the scene with the bees) don't read this outside! LOL! That's all I'm saying on that matter.

The secondary cast of characters was also very well thought out and developed, and I can't wait to read more about them in this series. This is a highly entertaining book you will not be able to put down!

I thought A Rebel Heart by Beth White was an excellent book. It has likable characters and a good plot line with a bit of mystery. The romance is sweet and not overbearing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Rebel Heart and look forward to reading future books by Beth White.

A Rebel Heart begins with the oldest Daughtry sister Selah. She is struggling to keep what is left of her family afloat in the aftermath of the Civil War. After being rescued from a train wreck by northerner Levi Riggins, they team up together to try and save Selah's home from foreclosure.

Beth White's book, A Rebel Heart, the first in a new series is a great book. I enjoy Beth's writing style. The story is full of challenges as the Daughtry family is trying to save their home/plantation after the Civil War. With the help of a Yankee posing as a railroad/hotel manager, Levi Riggins who is actually a Pinkerton agent investigating robberies in the area. Selah who is the driving force in the family is not sure if she can trust a Yankee. White's book is full of romance and danger and I am looking forward to reading more in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Selah and Levi were both easy to like. Each had such endearing qualities. Life was not easy during and after the Civil War as this novel illustrates. There was still a huge divide between the North and the South as well as the slaves and slave owners. This novel depicts these differences and the struggles to overcome obstacles and start again. Looking forward to the next book. Recommended!

I have not read many books set during the reconstruction period after the Civil War. I started a A Rebel Heart expecting a book about the Civil War and was pleasantly surprised to find it was about the reconstruction. I enjoyed the history of the economic and social devastation in the south and the different ways of trying to rebuild society and life. Being a history nerd, I would have preferred a little more history and a little less romance but I still enjoyed this book. I will be watching for the next book in the series!

The first in a new series about the Reconstructionist South, this book incorporates a living history lesson into a mystery and romance story. The lead characters are obviously going to end up together, but their journey through conflict and into courtship helps move the story forward. Personally, I liked the mystery aspect of this story best of all, and kept trying to figure out the answer right along with the detective...the answer was a surprise! We get a glimpse of characters that will mostly likely be featured in the upcoming books as a sequel to this one; however, the book itself works as a stand-alone, as all of the pertinent issues are resolved by the end.

Didn’t finish. There were some instances toward the beginning of the book that made me uncomfortable and I felt it best to set the book aside. This book just wasn’t for me.
