I enjoyed Evelyn's writing style--it is easy to read and flows well, but this book just wasn't quite my jam. I liked the characters but wanted to get a little more info on them, get to really KNOW them, ya know? I wanted them to go deeper as people and see what that would look like.
The storyline felt like it (to me) stalled almost the whole way through. I was hooked at the beginning, but soon after that, I kinda lost interest.
I wanted to see more happening, but once we discovered the whole "Dude MC is a spy, don't let anyone know" it seemed like that was the only mulberry bush (plot-wise) we kept circling around for the whole book. That really only kept me entertained for a few chapters, then I wanted more and got a bit bogged down by the predictability of the storyline.

I will admit I struggle with books that have no suspense in them, so given the fact that this book is not historical suspense--it's historical romance--it seems to be in my reading taste to have wanted a bit more intrigue, suspense, faster moving plot, and danger, which I didn't find in this book. The English Lieutenant's Lady didn't advertise as a suspense read, but given the synopsis, I was hoping for at least a good little chunk of intrigue/suspense?

As a historic account, this was a good book. As I said before, I truly did enjoy Evelyn's writing style, I just wanted to see more happening with/to the characters. More heart. More raw.
Evelyn has a good voice with her writing. The events that took place in the book just didn't hold me.

A novel set in the time of the westward expansion in America. Love story between an undercover British officer and an American woman with native American blood. Explores the prejudices of the day as well as the tension between Britain and the fledgling US.

Each of them omitted things that would have kept them from being accepted into the town. But the two grew close, and they were engaged. Can this engagement become a permanent marriage between the two?

What a terrific inspirational romance. This book is well written with a good plot and characters. I loved the Oregon setting. I am not usually a fan of historical fiction but certainly enjoyed this book. I highly recommend this book.

The English Lieutenant's Lady is a story of the sea (characters are hiding their past or present from all of them know including each other.), Family (Lia is taking care of her nephew, which includes finding a home for the two of them in Oregon.) Romance (Leah and Lieutenant Geoffrey build their heart hump and bump as soon as they meet.) Pretense (how the two of them pretend to be a courtin') and GOD (how the trust in the LORDsees them through their daily lives.)

I really enjoyed The English Lieutenant's Lady. I loved the main characters and how they developed in the story. They didn't appear to have much in common, but they really did. In the end, each showed great courage that helped set the course for their future.

Geoffrey Montgomery is working undercover for the British government. As he travels to the Oregon Territory to spy, he comes upon, Lia and her little nephew. Lia is also headed to the Oregon Territory so that she can take care of her nephew and get him an education. The two find that they are not enemies and share an attraction to one another. When Geoffrey sees Lia again in town in need of rescue, he comes to her aid. The two become friends and enter into a mutually helpful agreement that they will pretend to court. But pretend soon turns to love. When Geoffrey announces their engagement, Lia agrees to it as well. But Geoffrey has to decide whether his duty is to his country or to his heart. He cannot be completely honest with Lia about what he does for a living but he is honest in the ways of the heart.

Lia also was dishonest with the town in order to get a teaching job. She denied her heritage knowing that she would not be welcome if they knew of her moth'er's heritage. She has to decide if telling a lie, will change her. When all secrets come to light, Lia shows amazing courage and seeks to confront Geoffrey and see if his lies also included lying about his heart. What happens next is the best part of the book!

The book is well written and kept my attention throughout.
