I haven't read any books by this author but I felt like it didn't take away from my reading experience. The mystery was enjoyable. The only thing I didn't care for was some of the foul language.

Charley Carpenter's life is a bit on hold as renovations at her vintage store are moving at a sluggish pace due to some setbacks. A distraction comes along when her awful neighbor's adult daughter is murdered in the basement and Charley can't help but wonder if it's related to a recent question submitted to the local paper's advice column "Ask Jackie" that alluded to a child in danger. Her police officer boyfriend, Marcus, is off the case, but that doesn't stop Charley from trying to find out what happened since she might be next on the killer's list.

I previously read the first book in this series, and my previous assessment still stands. I love the small town of Oakwood, Ohio and it's many inhabitants. The writing is good, Charley is a very likeable and capable main character, and the mystery is good, giving you hints and clues along the way without making it too obvious. My one complaint also still stands which is the language. It has a moderate amount of moderate level language plus a couple of f words which I could really do without. Overall, though, a great cozy mystery series I'll probably revisit in other installments. I'd give it a 3 1/2, but I like Charley and her friends so much I'll round up to a 4. Thanks to NetGalley for the free ebook.

Charley and her gang of friends and family are at it again. This time, her neighbor's young daughter is murdered, and she had also previously sent a note to a local advice column. Really enjoyed this one. My favorite in the series so far. Liked the characters, the plot and the banter. Highly recommend this cozy mystery series.

This was a fun read! This is actually the third book in Leslie Nagel’s Oakwood Mystery series, but it can easily be read as a standalone novel. The characters are interesting, though, and now I need to read the previous stories to get some more history.

In this book, Charley Carpenter is renovating her shop, Old Hat Vintage Fashions, and is working from home. Her neighbors are secretive and standoffish. One day, a young woman, the adult daughter of the woman next door talks with Charley in the yard. Charley gets the sense s the woman may need help, but she returned to the house. The next day, the woman is dead and Charley can’t help but investigate what happened.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great cozy mystery.

What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. The word building was phenomenal in this book. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.

Engrossing cozy mystery which is the third book in a series, Oakwood Book Club Mystery. First one I read in the series though.

Solid "who done it" that had me guessing until the end. Characters were quirky enough to tantalize me to read more of the series. Only downside was that I became a little confused by the multitude of suspects; lots of twists and turns.

Set in real life Oakwood, Ohio, The Advice Column murders has all the elements of a really great cozy mystery. It has the perfect mix of sleuthing and everyday life. The plot is well-paced and the characters are delightful. I loved getting to know Charley, her family and friends. This book is the third in the series and I cannot wait to read the rest.

I love to read books set in places I have been. I used to have family in Oakwood and enjoyed picking out some of the places I have been.

Thanks to NetGalley for sending me this book.

Unfortunately, I requested this book, but didn't get to read it before it was archived. I wish I had gotten to it.

Charley Carpenter is at it again. She unravels a thoroughly complicated family situation in which two are murdered. The entire story hinges on a letter to advice columnist Dear Jackie.
Marcus is away when the first murder happens and his boss calls in county detective Drummond. Charley manages to solve the mystery in spite of not sleeping, her store undergoing renovation and worry about Marcus losing his job because of her investigation.
This was such an interesting puzzle of a mystery this time. I really enjoyed following Charley through the story. I read the author’s bio at the end and realized Oakwooc is a real place. Now I want to visit! Only sometimes is a cozy mystery set in a real town. Somehow that makes it even more fun to imagine the characters lives.
I think this could be read as a stand-alone. But it is the third book in the Oakwood Mystery series.

This is an excellent mystery, sexy, witty, dangerous. I loved all the main characters! What a hot detective! Mark! Oh my! I am having a hard time with females being the heroes, while this incredible detective stands by, to keep her safe? I am deducting one star for punishing men, in order to flaunt her feminist attitude! A real man would not put up with her trying to do his job; it makes Marc look like a wimp! Plus, why no sex, as in bed talking, her sleeping over; it is obvious he loves her, more than she loves him! Real men are not that needy!
I recommend! Thank you Netgalley!

I sat down to finish this today and I was flying through the pages for a while – eager to solve the mystery! Leslie Nagel does a great job a of including enough detail to allow your imagination to recreate each vivid scene as you read. The book was suspenseful, without the gory details that are sure to haunt me in my nightmares.

It starts out with a bang – eerily pulling you into the crime scene right off the bat! You then move on to slowly get to know Charley’s neighbors and coworkers. Much like myself, she lives in a small town that really has a sense of community – the same sense of community that keeps you feeling safe. Charley, the leading lady, is kind, neighborly, and sharp as a tack. She’s independent and respectful. She’s family-oriented and creative. Characters like Charley are few and far between in today’s world. Plus, she’s a redhead. As soon as I read that little detail, I knew I liked her!

This is the first book I’ve read by Leslie Nagel and I thoroughly enjoyed how she managed to wind a bit of romance into this mystery. This is no easy task and she pulled it off by adding a bit of sizzle here and there without making it seem cheesy or forced. It was just enough to make you want more. Charley’s boyfriend is a total smoke show (at least that’s how I imagined him) with a level-head and a big heart. I actually wondered for a while if he was the villain, because.. I mean really, where did she find this Mr. Perfect? There’s got to be something wrong with him, right? *shrugs* I’ll leave that one for you to find out.

I will say I totally called that she was letting her own bias influence her decisions for a while. She openly admits it later on, so I’m not spoiling anything for you here. I didn’t figure out who was to blame and what the motive was until Charley exposed it in the end. The many perfectly placed twists and turns written into the storyline kept me on my toes. I laughed out loud and even gasped as I read along. A story that can make you physically responsive is the best kind of story!

I also found myself wondering how this seemingly-sweet gal who owns a vintage clothing store could be so good at sleuthing. I still haven’t totally figured that one out – except for just going with the thought that maybe Charley is just a nosey neighbor. However, I didn’t realize this book was part of a series untilI had already started it. I’m guessing she is the same character from those books – which would give her enough experience to call herself an amateur sleuth. Eh.. okay. I’ll play along.

So, what’s the verdict? Would I recommend this book? Yep! This one was suspenseful without being too dark. Definitely safe for young adults to dive into. This was the perfect addition to my lazy Sunday afternoon. I’ll be checking out the rest of the books in this series and more from Leslie Nagel.

I started reading this book, sadly I was unable to finish it. The story was not interesting to me and it seemed to drag on.

I didn't read any of the earlier books in the series, which on one hand didn't make it hard to follow along but it would have been nice to understand some of the references and follow the character development. Overall though, I thought the book was quite good and the mystery built up nicely. I did figure out who did it before it was revealed but I didn't have the motive figured out and that was interesting. Overall a good book that I would definitely recommend.

I really liked this cozy mystery. I haven't read any of the previous books in the series, so felt a little like I was missing some of the characters' background, but I still felt able to connect with them in this book. I enjoyed the mystery - it was very unique and I didn't guess the perpetrator until the end. I'd definitely read more in this series!

Can you imaging seeking advice and winding up with a murder? Charley is smack in the middle of this one, her hands are way more than full. I love the combination of a detective with a cozy mix. This well crafted, deeper than usual story had me not wanting to stop reading till the end arrived. I can't wait for more in this series, this was just what I needed for the week.

My copy came from Net Galley. My thoughts and opinions are my own. This review is left of my own free will.

The Advice Column Murders is part of the Oakwood Book Club cozy series. This is the first book I have read in the series and I was able to read it just fine without reading any others. I do want to read the book or books before this.

The main character Charley is like a small town Nancy Drew who is dating Detective Marcus Trenault. When a neighbor is murdered Charley is on the case. Using the advice column Ask Jackie she finds some clues that could lead to a killer.

This is a fun book and I cannot wait to read more.
