I have found K.L. Slater’s books to be a bit hit and miss when it comes to my enjoyment of them. I am so glad to say that The Visitor was a huge HIT. I loved it and couldn’t read quick enough to see how everything would conclude.

The suspense in The Visitor is fantastic. The setting is well-imagined to the point where it was somewhere I really wouldn’t want to live. As somebody who enjoys my own company, I’ve often joked about wishing I lived in a village where I could lock myself away and read books all day long. The problem with small settings like that is that everybody knows your business, and you never know who is watching you. The anonymity of city life where we mostly ignore our neighbours is perhaps the safer place for now! That kind of setting is present here where we have David who keeps watch on all of his neighbours. Whilst an extraordinarily creepy character, I found myself identifying with David at times in his struggle to make sense of the real, adult world. I have sometimes spent too long living in the past and, creepiness aside, there was something in David that I almost related to. And I say almost because there’s more to this character than meets the eye.

Holly arrives next door to David and moves in with Cora. Holly is a character shrouded in mystery and both I and David couldn’t wait to find out more about her. With snippets of her life back in Manchester, we are slowly fed little bits of information about that previous life and the real reason Holly has moved to the area. For the majority of the book I really liked Holly, and had no idea just where the story was going to go. The back and forth nature of how the story was told felt a little disjointed and I felt italicised paragraphs or dates breaking things up might have helped those flashbacks flow a little better. That said it was a lot of fun reading about Holly’s old life and trying to make sense of it all.

Now, as we neared about the 70% mark my interest was waning a little bit. I felt the story had gone on too long without anything majority exciting happening. Then, EVERYTHING happened. In some of Kim’s other books I could sense the twist coming from a mile away and here in The Visitor I was at about 89% and still I had no idea what was going to be revealed. The reveal (or reveals should I say) when it came was brilliant and completely knocked me for six. It was a chilling, haunting ending and that means these characters will be living in my mind for a while longer yet. The ending was probably the best part of the book and whilst it was an intense and suspenseful read in places, I did find it lacking in others. But, with such a creepy and gripping tale to be had here I can’t do anything but highly recommend The Visitor. As books like this always do, it’s making me want to look over my shoulder and question each twitch of a neighbour’s window or each light left on at 2 in the morning. You never know who’s watching you.

2.5 unfortunately dull stars

Sometimes thrillers pull you in at the get go. Sometimes, they have a slow burn that has you turning pages into the night. However, sometimes, they just are plain dull and make the reader feel they need to make quantum leaps of believably. Unfortunately, this book was of the latter type.

Holly is a young woman who left home because of a step father making unwarranted advances. She and her friend, Marcus, have made plans to go to another city where a promise of jobs await them. The promise for Holly turns out to be more of a nightmare. She is left destitute, but by chance meets an elderly lady who takes Holly into her home. The next door neighbor, David, is an older unusual man. He spies on his neighbors and has cameras at the ready to see the comings and goings of his neighbors.

Holly eventually lands a job in a posh furniture store where one of the shop girls, Emily, takes an immediate dislike to her. Life is hard for Holly. She teems up with David, who also works a the store, and as Holly's story unveils, David and others are drawn into the tale of Holly's former life.

Unfortunately, in this story there were a lot that pushed believably. There were things going on that did not make much sense and ultimately resulted in a book that was slow and highly predictable. The secrets revealed about the characters stretched one's imagination. While yes, we all carry around secrets, these secrets seemed implausible.

So, unfortunately for me this book did not hit the mark for a thriller that thrilled me. I know this author writes wonderful stories, but I felt this was just not one of them

Thanks you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for making this book available to me.

am a big fan of K.L. Slater! She always manages to make the twistiest of twists work so well in her books and does so with a side order of relish! I really don’t know how she does it but she always ends up fooling me not just once but often twice or more! I am always on the look out for her next psychological thriller to get my fix cos this woman really rocks her twists!!!

There are three main characters here and they take turns with telling the story, each hiding secrets and all unreliable narrators. There is Holly who has come back to her home town, fleeing a past life in Manchester and convinced someone is watching her every move. She’s trying to move on with a good job, and a nice place to stay but is her past about to catch up with her? David is still living at home with his mum after an “incident” that no one talks about. When Holly moves in next door and ends up working for the same company they become friends. But is his “hobby” about to get him into trouble? And then there is Cora who has taken in Holly to help her. Is this lovely old lady to be trusted as her memory doesn’t seem to be working as well as it used to? As small clues start to appear it is obvious that someone is in danger but from who and why?

Well, I just flew through this book in just one afternoon. I couldn’t rest until I got to the bottom of what had happened to Holly and why? There was a permanent taste of fear and anxiety in my mouth as the tension started to build up towards what I had half hoped wouldn’t happen…..BUT IT DID! But boy, did the last few pages prove that I know NOTHING!!! The twists came thick and fast and just when you thought you had it all then BAM! another one came along to floor you! Oh the deception…..I LOVED IT! This is one of those books you just want to go back and start from the beginning again so you can read it with the knowledge that you now have just so you can see exactly how clever this book is!

Full of intriguing characters that you’re never quite sure if you like or not, The Visitor is a gripping read with a killer hook and some twistier than twisty shocks. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Visitor by K.L Slater is another excellent novel from this author. I have read all her novels and like her others this one doesn’t disappoint.
Holly has returned to Nottingham after being years away. She left with her friend Markus to start a new life in Manchester but, now she is back after having a bad time. But, now she is homeless and penniless. She happens to bump into Cora, who feels sorry for her when is found crying and offers her a room in her house. She becomes ‘The Visitor’. Cora could do with the company, as she lives alone now as her husband has died.
At first she is happy something is going right for her for a change and she meets David. Who is an odd fellow and who is 40 years old and still lives with his parents. Who sees everything that happens on Baker crescent. She gets a job in an upmarket department store called Kennington’s and life seems to being getting better. But although things are getting better, she senses that someone is watching her. Someone is trying to get hold of her from her past. The story also tells of her life when she went to Manchester and goes to work for Brendan and Geraldine.
This is another gripping thriller from Ms Slater. It’s original and tense and I like her style of writing. You never know what you are going to get with this author and I like how she keeps you guessing right up to the end and then bang the brilliant twist at the end. You will never see it coming. Well done Ms Slater another Hit.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book.

I did not like this book because of its tone, The subject/secret did not grip me.

I loved The Visitor I could not put it down.
Kept guessing right up to the last few pages and I was wrong, a fab book, with plenty of twists and turns.

Now I must admit this is the first book I have read by K.L Slater BUT… Rest assurred all her other books are waiting patiently on my kindle. What a brilliant story! I enjoyed it, I loved it.

Who did you really let into your home?

The Visitor is told through three main characters Holly, David and Cora. I found each character odd, unusual and different in their own personal way, but I especially thought David’s character was a right wierdo. Each character is hiding their own dark secrets which are not revealed until the end and trust me you will not expect any of them!

The story is written well, easy to read, fast paced and contains short chapters. I managed to finish The Visitor within 24 hours. Gripping. The ending is where it all starts to kick off!! Wow. Towards the end I did start to feel sorry for poor Holly, but I think the ending was perfect for this story. A well deserved four stars and I would highly recommend to you all.

The Visitor without doubt doesn’t disappoint. This newest title has the same high quality of writing and plot development I have become used to associating with her work. The Visitor is psychological thriller at its best! This is mostly a character-driven story and has a dual POV structure. The story switches between Holly and David as the plot develops, the present linking the two different storylines as they are slowly getting more intertwined. Holly’s past is the main focus of the intrigue and secrets and plays a big role in the many plot twists that will be revealed as you keep reading. As a reader, you are completely left in the dark about what exactly happened to Holly, although I did have some vague ideas and some of it turned out to be true. BUT. The final plot twists and reveals basically left me speechless and I don’t think anyone would have been able to guess it all. I just love with when a story manages to surprise me! That said, I can’t say I was a big fan of Holly. The character development is very well done though, and helps turn The Visitor into another success. Fans of character-driven psychological thrillers will have a blast reading this one!

What a brilliant read this book was! Told from the perspectives of three main characters, which I really enjoyed. Little bit slow to start with but a really fantastic plot.

Will definitely be reading more of K.L Slater's work

3.5/5 stars rounded to 4. So I'm a big fan of this author. I have read all of her books thus far and enjoyed them all.

Holly is one of our main narrators. She returns to her hometown and is taken in by a friendly older woman named Cora. Something bad has happened to Holly but she really doesn't let us in on her secrets. She speaks of a Geraldine and Evan but we really don't know who they are or what significance they have on Holly's life.

David lives next door. David is very "different". He is a 40 year old who still lives at home with his mom and watches people from the window not leaving the house after dark. David intrigued me. Why was he so different and what happened to make him not want to go out after dark? I wanted to know more about him. He desperately seemed in need of a friend and this new visitor next door could just be perfect for him.

While I enjoyed this book, I must say the ending was a bit abrupt and ended too quickly for me. I'm still here after having finished like wait, what?! Too much to take in at one time! This may be considered a spoiler ahead so please stop reading, be forewarned. I'm not so sure how I feel about narrators who all of a sudden become completely different people than what you were lead to believe throughout the whole book!? hmmm.... (end spoiler)

I am still a big fan of K. L. Slater's and cannot wait to see what she comes up with next! A huge thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy of this book!! Keep them coming K. L.. Slater!

I was given an advantage in exchange for an honest review
. Eh- it's not awful. The pacing is very slow, the characters are a bit stock, but it's serviceable in the end. There were some twists I just did not see coming. Did the job.

Everyone has a secret in their past. Everyone pretends to be something they're not.

Holly returns to her home town after some time away - she has been through something terrible and now she needs a safe haven in which to recover. She finds a room in the quiet suburban street, in the home of Cora Barrett. David lives next door to Cora and he sees everything that happens on Baker Crescent. David stays at home and watches, he does not like to leave the house. He wants to keep his friends and neighbours safe.

Is it just me or is there a lot of books just now where there is someone who can't/won't leave their home., but like to people watch and record what they see.? Holly has left her old life behind but feels someone from her past has tracked her down. There is lots of twists in this fast paced book. The story tells us about her living and working in Nottingham and her ordeal when she was living in Manchester. This book has suspense, mystery and most important for me, we get all the loose ends tied up.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the K. L. Slater for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Visitor K.L. Slater

The thing I like about novels by K.L. Slater is their subtleness. The stories are almost pedestrian but they are loaded with tension, and this one is fully loaded.

David is a slightly strange middle aged man who lives at home with his mom and her new partner. David has autistic tendencies, he hates change, he's very methodical, socially awkward, and he's a bit voyeuristic. He sees himself as a one man neighbourhood watch.

His next door neighbour is the widowed Cora. David counts her as one of, if not his only friend, so when Cora takes in a lodger David becomes worried.

Holly is the lodger. At 28 she has just moved back to her old home city of Nottingham after 10 years in Manchester. As the story moves on it is apparent that Holly moved away because she lived in a home where she felt unwanted and unsafe. But what she found in Manchester was worse, and now she's run away, but why back to Nottingham. As the story unfolds Holly's Manchester years get told in her memories.

She is paranoid somebody is watching her and that her Manchester life is hunting her down.

Holly and David develop a friendship, but who is helping who. Is one, or the other, actually more of a danger than a friend.

If you want a book that's going to keep you turning the pages, and keep you guessing right up till the end, you're going to love this book.

I have tried to find the right analogy to describe this book, but I keep going back to one that sounds negative. It's like the Chinese Water Torture, but in a good way. There is a constant drip of information, which builds up the tension. The story builds and builds without any specific key moment; but that constant drip is really building the tension in one of the best psychological thrillers I've read.

The end of this book is nothing short of stunning. The last two chapters twist the story in a direction I never saw coming, but it makes perfect sense.

What a book.

Another really good read from K L Slater , they always hook me from the beginning and the visitor was no different . Holliehas gone back to her hometown after leaving under a cloud several years earlier ,Cora and elderly lady takes pity on her and invites her to stay , we get Hollies story in flash back and I enjoyed this part of the book , she gets a job , makes a friend with David the strange middle aged man still living at home with his mum . Hollie feels like her past is catching up with her and that she is in danger and it all comes together in a satisfying climax , great story really enjoyed it , if I had the tiniest criticism the last quarter felt a little rushed , but in all would recommend .

Thanks Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book. I'm sorry but unlike previous K. L. Slater books I just didn't enjoy this book at all! I found it hard to read to the end. It was a strange one!
