I have read previous books by K.L.Slater so knew I was in for a good read and ‘The Visitor’ did not disappoint
What I loved about this book is that the story built and built and you never knew the full story of the characters or what had brought them together until the final few chapters, so there is a story that you get involved with but all the time the ‘other’ story is building and you are fed tantalising hints and ‘almosts’ as the author builds and builds BOTH stories....It is very cleverly and brilliantly done and had me guessing various scenarios throughout
The writing flows from the first line and the characters are wonderfully brought to life.... interesting, dark and complex characters that I loved reading about
The stories continues building to a tense finale and you feel you have invested your time well and read a really, really good book
Stalking, obsession, greed and past-terrible events all mix to make a book you will find hard to have a break from and wont settle until you find out the truth....the terrible truth
Awesome book 10/10 5 stars

Another fantastic book by KL Slater, her books are just amazing, the minute you see the book cover you know you have to read it, The Visitor was an un-putdownable, addictive read, straight from the beginning you are drawn in by the characters and have a sense of gloom and lots of secrets, my favourite character was David, such a nice person inside but you just had a feeling about him, and was there another side to him? well done K L Slater you have smashed it again!!.

In some ways, this book was soooo good! In others, not so much. I loved that everyone had a secret, all of the characters are hiding something and you want to keep turning the pages to find out what, why, when...
I didn't like that everything wraps up in the last couple of chapters. All of a sudden, everyone's secrets are revealed and it just seemed so fast, at least for me.
While reading, I changed my mind so many times about whether a character was up to no good or not. I was interested to read all of Holly's story, I really wanted to know what had happened in the ten years she had been gone. And David! Was he really just a misunderstood, weird guy next door or was he something more sinister?
This novel was a bit choppy for me also, Holly's POV switches from present to past and back with no warning and sometimes I had to go back to figure it out. The same thing happens with David's POV. While I still wanted to keep reading, I just found it a bit offputting at times.

Half of me really enjoyed this and half of me was disappointed with the lack of depth in quite a few areas. Overall though, I enjoy things are not what they seem books.

Thanks to Netgalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Visitor’ by KL Slater in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
David’s in his forties and people think he’s ‘different’ as he likes to watch neighbours from his bedroom window and film them on CCTV for his own ‘neighbourhood watch’. Whilst looking out of his window he sees a young woman, Holly, in his neighbour Cora Barrett’s garden and discovers that Cora has let Holly stay with her in her house for company. But Holly isn’t what she seems and has secrets from the time she lived in Manchester.
The story moves effortlessly between Holly’s past and present, to David’s preoccupation with jotting notes in his Rolodex system and his job at Kellington’s. I warmed to David who finds life a struggle and just wants someone to be friends with. As I was reading I could sense there was something not quite right with Holly but it wasn’t until the end that everything becomes clear. ‘The Visitor’ is a thoroughly entertaining psychological novel that’s easy to read with interesting characters and a strong storyline. I can recommend it.

Having read and loved all of K.L. Slaters previous books, I was very much looking forward to starting her latest release.
I was so intrigued in this story from the very beginning, the author does an exceptional job of creating an atmosphere and building tension amongst the characters. I was never sure who to trust or what secrets were being hidden. I genuinely had no clue what way the story would go and The Visitor quickly became a story that was impossible to put down, I was up late because I just had to finish it in one sitting.

K.L. Slater has written another truly fantastic book that will have you racing through the pages, and I would thouroughly recommend this.

Thank you

David and Holly are next-door neighbours. They both have mysterious pasts that they are trying to forget and move on from. They yearn for a new, different life and are biding their time waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself. They are outcasts, a little different from everyone else and are living on the edge of society. They sense their similarity and gradually gravitate together to become friends.
David is on medication to keep him within the realms of normal. His past is alluded to but not revealed until nearly the end of the novel. He works part time as a car park attendant at an exclusive department store in Nottingham, not far from Wollaston where he lives in Baker Crescent, a nice area; quiet and respectable. He watches the residents of the crescent where he lives from his bedroom window, or sometimes from their gardens. Unknown to them, he sees himself as their protector; a neighbourhood watch expert in his own free time, someone who will protect their locality.
Holly has moved in with an elderly lady called Cora Barrett who took pity on her and offered her a room when she moved back to Wollaston from Manchester. It is her home village where she used to live after the death of her parents. She had left her Aunt and Uncle’s house for a job in Manchester, where she ran into trouble and had been wronged. Her experience casts a shadow over her life and she is determined to save up and return for what is rightfully hers. What is rightfully hers is also kept under wraps until the end of the novel.
The stories of these two individuals and how it impacts on the other characters in their lives is exactly what this novel is about. The storytelling was driven by it. The other characters were mainly neighbours and work colleagues in the main story but the characters in Holly’s back story were different. I felt compelled to read on, although the build up to the action was measured if not slow. The climax of the story was quite exciting
I would like to thank NetGalley and publisher Bookouture for my copy of this novel, sent to me in return for an honest review. I enjoyed reading ‘The Visitor’ and thought that the suspense and tension build up was good. It’s a 6.5/10 from me.

Are people who you think they are??

Holly leaves her hometown of Nottingham to escape the life she has there. An opportunity opens up for her in Manchester which she believes is a once in a lifetime job! Only to find out things aren’t exactly as they seem. She returns to her hometown of Nottingham and is now a visitor staying with Cora, an older lady who lives alone. Cora’s neighbor David is 40 years old and lives with his mother. Due to an incident in his past, David’s life now revolves around watching his neighbors from his bedroom window keeping track of their lives. Will Holly and David become friends? Will Holly be able to put her life back together or destroy those who only want to help her?

Thank you NetGalley Bookouture for allowing me to read this exciting thriller!

Holly moves back home to her home town, Nottingham. She has been in Manchester since she left her Aunt and Uncle’s house some years before but something bad happened there and she needed to come home. She finds a room with a lonely widower, Cora and goes about setting her life straight by getting a job in an exclusive furniture store. David lives next door to Cora with his mum. He’s a 40-odd year old man who still lives at home with his mum. He has a penchant for watching the neighbours and making notes of what they do from his bedroom window. He sees Holly arrive at Cora’s house and when Holly finds out David also works at the same place as her she goes about making sure they become friends – good friends.

Now, I was always going to give this one a great review as I love this author and her books! I’ve read all her other books and have thoroughly enjoyed them – this one was no exception! As the norm with the other books, the story begins slowly and builds up tension and suspense as it goes. The story is told from Holly and David’s perspective and it’s obvious that Holly is hiding a big secret. You can sort of have a guess what it is, but it’s not fully revealed right until the very end. David is a strange man. He obviously has ‘issues’ and despite his binoculars and Rolodex cards, you can see his heart is in the right place, but perhaps that’s his downfall!

The characters are interesting – you are never sure of who to like or who to trust – and my opinions of them changed as the book went on. It does show that almost all the characters have a secret of some sort and trying to work out what those secrets are is the fun bit!! The story is full of twists and turns, and I wasn’t quite sure where it was leading to until the very end with the big reveal. It is definitely a book where you need to read it to the last word and the ending certainly wasn’t expected!

If you love your suspense filled psychological thrillers then this will not disappoint. A big fat thumbs up from me!

Holly is back in her hometown .... almost penniless, homeless. At her wits end, crying, not knowing where to turn, fate takes a turn. An elderly lady, Cora, takes pity on the girl and invites her to stay at her home until she gets on her feet again. Cora loves having the company with someone to talk to and Holly feels safe for the first time in a long time.

Cora's next door neighbor, David, is what most people would call an odd ball. He's certainly different. Forty years old and he's afraid of the dark. He spends a lot of time in his upstairs bedroom watching the neighborhood. He's intrigued by Holly... but Holly has been warned that she should stay away from him, but not exactly why.

Holly has left her old life behind. No one knows where she is.... or so she thinks. Who is creeping around the house? Why is someone blaming her for mistakes at work? Who wrote the threatening letter?

There are so many twists and turns along the way. The ending blew me away .... it was so unexpected. This is a terrific psychological thriller. Each of this author's books are better than the last. Highly recommend to read.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Holly lived with her aunt and uncle in Nottibgham after her parents died. She could hardly wait to leave and travelled to Manchester looking for a new and better life. After a bad experience she returns to Nottibgham but nothing is the same. Many twists and turns with an amazing ending. Thank you NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

4.5 stars.
The story flicks between Holly and David. Holly's chapters go back and forth from past to present so that the story builds up to events that happened as a teenager. We know something happened as she seems to be running scared but we don't know quite what. I really liked Holly as she is obviously wanting to get her life back on track and I was willing for everything to turn out right for her.

David is very much an odd ball. I didn't know quite what to make of him. He has done something in his past, of which I was dying to know just exactly what. It took me a while to warm up to him as I wasn't quite sure where exactly he fitted into the whole story but the further into the book I got, the more he started to grow on me. He actually reminded me very much of Jim Nicholson in As Good As It Gets and the friendship that him and Helen Hunt strike up.

The Visitor is yet another compelling read by the author that had me totally hooked. I know as soon I start one of her books that I won't be disappointed and I emerge myself totally into the story forgetting the world outside. The tension and suspense mounts as the story goes a long, guaranteeing those pages getting turned. Whilst some things I guessed correctly, others totally took me by surprise and have to say I absolutely loved that ending.

Wow... that ending blew me away! I could not wait to read this book after enjoying all of KL Slaters other book.

Holly left Nottingham 10 years ago.. and thought she would never return. But life in Manchester did not quite go the way she planned and something terrible happened to her. She has returned and is a visitor staying with Cora.

Cora's neighbour David is a bit different... he is 40 years old and still lives at home with his mother. After an incident a few years ago he no longer likes to leave the house after dark. He spends his afternoons watching the people on the street and keeping a close eye on their lives.

Will Holly will be able to start fresh in Nottingham, and will David be able to be her friend.?

I loved this book... not knowing until the end the truth behind the characters behaviours. I have had a quiet weekend of reading and read this one in a few hours.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest opinions
