WOW!!!!!!

This book went from 0 to 60 from the first page. I could not put it down. The pace of the storyline was rapid and at times got dizzy from the layers of the plot, yet somehow, with all of the moving parts, this author did an amazing job with threading the plot together.

This story is told in 3 POVs and centers around the "Bankers Wife". Annabel is the wife who learns that her husband's plane has crashed and while dealing with her grief, discovers that his role as a tax attorney for a high profile bank had many secrets. The bank is located in Geneva and deals with high profile clients who want anonymity, whether to protect their money from tax exposure or to help nefarious and corrupt governments who are on sanctions list. This bank has no meal compass and is too greedy to care. This reality unfolds as Annabel does not believe the crash was an accident. She soon learns that the secrets her husband had are posing a threat to her and she is now racing against the clock to get to the truth.

On the other side of the world is Marina, a reporter, who owes her career to her boss, Duncan, who happens to interrupt her trip with her fiance to let her know he is close to writing the story of the decade and needs her help. He informs him that after she is married, she is leaving the journalism business to help her new father-in-law with his bid for the presidency. He asks her to pick up something for her and then he will finish the story on his own. This is short lived as Marina is thrust into the story whether she wants it or not. A story about a bank that breeds international corruption. What she learns changes everything and she, too, is racing against the clock to get to the truth.

Zoe is the banker's assistant, and is suspicious about the bank culture but is fearful of the power it holds. Can she find the courage to expose them?

This story had me from the first page and I found myself holding my breath given the enormity of the wide net of characters that the bank represented. This book had the flavor of John Grisham's, The Firm, with International Finance. This is my first Cristina Alger novel and I am a fan who can't wait to read more. Well done!!

Fantastic read! I couldn't put it down! Wonderfully drawn characters and excellent writing style.

Throw together "The Firm" with current events such as The Panama Papers and the modern-day political situation, and you have The Banker's Wife. A great summer--or anytime--read!

Yes yes yes!!! I was so excited to get my hands on this one and it did not disappoint! This is a fast-paced investigative story of financial intrigue and corruption on an international stage with a couple of badass women being badasses and I am SO here for it!

The story is told through alternating perspectives. Marina is an investigative journalist working for a man who has been investigating a Swiss bank hiding an exorbitant amount of American money. Annabel lives in Geneva with her husband Matthew, who works as a private banker for Swiss United. After some mysterious deaths, both women embark upon separate but similar quests to uncover secrets, and they both end up being pursued by people who will stop at nothing to make sure they remain silent about what they find. I also love that this book gave me all the North By Northwest vibes as the women jetted off to various locations across the globe to solve the mystery and escape danger. This is a thriller that keeps you thinking and craving more all day long until you can pick it up again. This is my first Cristina Alger book, and it certainly will not be my last!

An enormous thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for an ARC of this book!

I feel like this is a tough book to rate. Parts of it felt better than a 3, but parts of it were just not good enough to a be a 4. I do feel like more of the book was a 3 though, so I’ll go with that.

The book definitely started strong. A mysterious plane crash leaves Annabel and widow and wondering what happened. Marina, a journalist, is marrying into a powerful family, but then her boss mysteriously ends up dead. Lots of interesting backstory and a bit of intrigue had me really caring about the characters.

But then at some point the story becomes repetitive, powerful people and criminals have money stashed in this offshore bank in Switzerland and powerful people are trying to cover it up. Annabel and Marina separately are trying to uncover information about the powerful people with hidden money. A source inside the bank is leaking information about the powerful people and criminals. We don’t learn anything new besides what we know at the beginning for so long, and I just didn’t care enough about what was going on and this hidden dirty money and powerful people. I cared about the characters, but not the mystery.

Another problem was that there were so many characters and names, especially because for so long Annabel and Marina’s storylines don’t overlap that it was hard to remember who was who, who was interacting with which main characters, who was trustworthy and who was corrupt. Honestly even at the end of it I’m still not totally clear on what happened to some characters and who they even were.

Admittedly, there’s a pretty big twist towards the end that had me considering upping my rating. But I feel like I just didn’t enjoy the book enough overall to give it 4 stars. It was very well written and I’m amazed I enjoyed a book about banks and journalists as much as I even did. I feel like that says a lot about this author. The characters really were likable, and I was surprised by some of the things that happened. But overall I just didn’t care enough about the subject matter. Maybe the problem is that this book was just not for me, and no fault of the book itself.

What a page turner! I was worried after reading reviews saying that this story revolved around the Swiss banking industry and hedge funds and lots of other financial dealings I'm completely ignorant of, but it ended up being an interesting part of this story and not difficult at all to get into. This book caught my attention right away. It gets right into the meat of the story from the get-go and never lets up.

Thank you to Netgalley & G.P. Putnam's Sons for the ARC. This was definitely a refreshingly different vein of thriller. It would be the perfect book for someone who is into the dark world of offshore accounts and banking. Unfortunately, I get enough banking in my 40 hour work week and I couldn’t fall into this book like I hoped I would. The writing was spectacular and it had a noir-like vibe that I enjoyed. Only 3 stars for me, but it could be someone else’s 5 Star cup of tea.

The Banker’s Wife is a fast paced story of suspense and intrigue. Many aspects of the book reminded me of John Grisham’s The Firm.
I always love to see strong female characters and The Banker’s Wife features several very strong women. Annabelle is the wife who finds herself in the middle of a dangerous, world-wide financial scandal. Mirina is the journalist who makes a huge personal sacrifice in order to expose the truth. Zoe is an employee who can not sit idly by as illegal activities take place.
This is a true page turner and I really enjoyed the suspense. I also enjoyed the development of the strong female characters. This book will keep you turning ten pages until the satisfying ending. I think it will turn out to be one of the best books of the summer.

This was an excellent thriller about the world of international finance. It was very fast paced, people were dying left and right, others didn't know who they could trust, and trillions of dollars are at stake. I mean, I could NOT get enough! I love it when the story grips you from the beginning - it starts with a plane crash and never lets up from there. As the reader I never got lost in the details, even though it twisted and turned, and I was grateful for that. I love financial thrillers and Alger did such a great job bringing in other components into this one as well, such as art, cartels, etc. I work in banking, so I understood some of the terminology already, but I thought Alger did an excellent job of explaining what was going on in such a way that it stayed interesting and did not lose the pace of the story. I loved the ending as well, did NOT see it coming and it was very satisfying. So well done. I read this one in a couple of sittings because I could not put it down! Highly recommend, it is a 5 star for me! Thanks to NetGalley for the electronic ARC. All opinions are my own.

It’s just a little bit terrifying if you allow yourself to believe that this scenario is reality. All you need to do is watch a bit of the nightly news and you know...... how much money or power is enough.?What motivates someone to put themselves and their unsuspecting families is such danger? What’s frightening is that no number is enough and the search for domination and power will take no prisoners. Peoples lives are just expendable and currency for their greed. I really enjoyed the book and found that I could easily follow the storyline from each point of view. The characters were memorable, relatable, and likable. Sometimes I find that an author makes the story so complex that I have to go back several times to reread passages or keep a written tab on the names of all involved. This author allowed me to lightly read a thriller/suspense story and immerse myself into the subject while thoroughly enjoying the book. With today’s political climate and the daily rekevations, I found this read enlightening and terrifying at once. This is really happening. How much do you know about your spouses job? Who do you trust? I highly recommend this read! #netgalley #christinaalger #penguin. Thank you for the advance copy

That Banker’s Wife captures you from the first chapter. Cristina Alger weaves a masterful thiriller about offshore banking and the high powered people caught in its web. After her husband dies in a plane crash Annabel is left to discover just what Matthew did at his job with Swiss United Bank after she discovers a secret client list. Meanwhile, a high profile journalist with a talent for scoping out family and political secrets is finishing one last investigative story before she marries into her fiancées powerful family. Both ladies’ discoveries lead to more questions than answers... I highly recommend this book. I did receive an ARC of this book, all opinions are my own.

“The Banker’s Wife” is an intriguing fast paced thriller that’s exciting from beginning to end. It is SO good! From page one, I became totally immersed in the story and invested in the characters. Christina Alger is a master storyteller.

Annabel and her husband, Matthew make the move to Geneva to further her husband’s career and their finances. When Annabel learns that her husband is killed in a plane crash in the Alps, she is devastated and refuses to believe he’s dead. Something just doesn’t add up.

Marina an American investigative journalist is engaged to Grant Ellis; she’s learning to navigate in the political waters that come with his family all-the-while maintaining her objectivity and focus in her field. The story Marina and her boss are working on is capable of rocking Annabel’s world but also her own.

Alger writes a holy cow ending and it is outstanding!

Get ready for a great paced, twisting and turning thriller! I was hooked from the start, having no idea where the story was going to take me.

This book is filled with strong female characters, all of whom kick butt. I couldn't find a negative thing about them. They are smart, strong-willed, and take no crap from anyone. Their brilliance and perseverance left me in awe.

The plot of this book kept me on my toes from the very beginning. I couldn't put it down. It is full of twists and turns I definitely didn't see coming. As the plot thickened, the action picked up and left my heart pounding.

I was worried about the main subject of this book. I am not familiar with banking and financing, but the author did a fantastic job at keeping the reader informed without being boring. I found myself intrigued and curious. This was definitely a thriller I wasn't expecting to be so entertaining.

I rated this book a 4.5/5 stars. The book was well-written and it draws you in almost immediately! The story begins with a couple boarding a plane but something goes terribly wrong with the flight and you are left to figure out what what happened to plane & the passengers on it?!?

The author does a wonderful job of providing a backstory, while keeping your interest. The chapters are written from the three strong female perspectives, Marina, Annabel, and Zoe. You learn how each of their lives intertwine and develop over the course of the novel. The element of thrill and suspense was definitely there and it will keep you guessing! If you enjoyed the movie, The Firm and enjoy strong female characters, this is the book for you!!! 😊

The Banker's Wife is a heart pounding, financial thriller with three strong, smart, and inspiring female protagonists that kept me on the edge of my seat. The novel starts with a plane crash, killing Annabel's husband, Matthew, a private Banker at Swiss United. He dies with a female client on her private plane. Was he having an affair with her or with his assistant, Zoe? Or was there something more to the story of his crash? Next, we meet Marina, a newspaper journalist fighting to report a story to clear the name of her mentor and boss, Duncan. Doing this will hurt her and the man she loves forever, so it is worth it?

It is so rare to read a book with women behaving morally and ethically correct. I loved that - bring on more, please! I cheered for the success of these ladies and I cared about them and their survival. And I am happiest when a novel can carry me to places I dream of traveling to, but could never do in real life. This story takes us from Geneva to London and Mexico, and to Pais and DC, never failing to make me feel like I just woke up in another country.

The Banker’s Wife is a book that I like a lot. The author Cristina Alger does something unique. She has written a psychological drama about two women whose husbands’ have deserted them. And have left them with information that immoral people are ready and willing to kill for.
The Banker’s Wife examines the shady and suspicious world of shore finance and banking. And does it clearly and well. Annabel’s husband is killed when his plane blows sky high, leaving her alone with her grief and a bagful of lethal secrets.
This well plotted and unpredictable thriller plays out very nicely over the breadth of the novel. It will keep you guessing and rooting for our heroine. Be forewarned – you might not want to get on the plane the next time you have a trip planned.

Annabel Lerner is devastated when she finds out that her husband Matthew, an employee of Swiss United, has been killed in a plane crash. As she works through her grief, some things come up and Annabel becomes convinced that powerful people in the financial world wanted him dead.

Marina Tourneau, a journalist, is engaged to marry Grant. Grant is from a wealthy, well-connect family and his father is running for President.  When Marina's friend, Duncan, is found dead, Marina takes over his story about Swiss United.  She uncovers shocking evidence that some of the most powerful and prominent people in the world could be up to some pretty bad things. Publishing the "story of a lifetime" would be very risky.

The book switches back and forth between Annabel and Marina, both of characters were well developed and reliable.  I have not read many books about the financial world and I was not sure that I would like this one, but I did find it interesting and I was not bored.  The premise - the financial world - is different from other thrillers and I appreciated that.

I would recommend this book to anyone who liked The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian.
