Two nights by Kathy Reichs.
Meet Sunday Night, a woman with physical and psychological scars, and a killer instinct ... Sunnie has spent years running from her past, burying secrets and building a life in which she needs no one and feels nothing. But a girl has gone missing, lost in the chaos of a bomb explosion, and the family needs Sunnie's help., Is the girl dead? Did someone take her?
Really really enjoyed this book. Love this author. 5*.

Many years ago, at least 12, I was lucky enough to go to a book launch lunch with Kathy Reichs. The timing seemed apt as I'd only days before, broken a toe while dancing & vacuuming. (Housework is violence). The lunch isn't memorable but Kathy is.
.
Releasing a new book with a new protagonist could be seen as a risk & with Two Nights, Reichs is almost there. I like Sunday & her brother is intriguing. I want to know more about her life on Goat Island & her past. In this first installment, it all felt a bit rushed & needed a little more flesh.
.
For anyone who has spent years reading the adventures of Brennan (& watching Bones), Two Nights might feel less than anticipated but give it time. For those who come to Reichs' work with this title, they're in for a great story, told with the usual powerful wordplay & charm.

Unlike many others this is my first Kathy Reichs book so I had nothing to judge it against. Did I enjoy it? Not really if I’m being honest. I didn’t hate but it just left me a little cold and bored.

The story of Sunday Night(yes I kid you not, our main character), an ex cop and war vet, she’s a damaged soul with a chequered past who lives as a recluse, distancing herself from the outside world and everyday life.

When she is asked to track down the granddaughter of a rich old lady, the granddaughter went missing when her mother and brother were killed in a bombing, something stirs in her from her past and she accepts, determined to find the granddaughter Stella.
As she travels the country chasing the leads on Stella she realizes and that she may have been kidnapped by a terrorist group or cult and races to find her before she is killed.

As said I just didn’t enjoy this book. I felt like I read it from the outside looking in rather than being engrossed in it and with the characters. The story is told mostly from Sunday’s viewpoint and narrated by her in a lot of short sentences one after another. I found this very jarring. More than once I had to go back and read a couple of sentences to see what they meant. There was just no flow to the dialect at all.

There were large sections of it that were just plain boring. As the chase or hunt ensues we are bombarded with information that leads to the smallest of developments in the plot, which at the end of the day is a “chase movie” with a shootout at the end.

There was the guts of a good story in there somewhere I’m sure, but I had as much a problem with the way it was told as I did with the story itself and that’s never a good thing. Sorry but this one wasn’t for me.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Random House UK and Kathy Reichs for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am a huge Kathy Reichs fan, but I was so dissappointed with this novel!
I found this book to be slow paced, boring and underwhelming, I found the lack of scientific puns and drama and sass completely changed the feel of her work.

It was ok. I love Reichs Temperance Brennan series but this fell a little short for me. Don't get me wrong it was still a good read, just not fantastic

I enjoyed this one but thought the main character a bit too much. Some of the other characters a bit unrealistic. However still a good read.

I'm sorry Kathy Reichs, but I couldn't get into this one at all! It was well written, but unfortunately lacked the ability to pull me intro the story.

One of my all-time favorite authors.

This was a great addition to the series and does not disappoint.

Realistic characters, action-packed and keeps you wanting more

I loved the Bones books and was excited to see what this new series would be like. It does have a totally different feel from Tempe's books and it has a completely different set up.

Sunday Night, former Marine, former Cop and current hermit is asked by her former foster father to look into the disappearance of a young girl. Sunnie can see the similarities between the missing girl and herself and decides to take the case.

When she visits the girls grandmother (think ultra rich, used to getting her own way, elderly lady) she finds out more of what happened and travels to Chicago to begin her investigation.

Sunday is is scarred, mentally and physically from her experiences and her childhood of which we can see glimpses. She is tough as nails and whilst she has retreated from the world she is not completely cut off. I love meeting her twin Gus, I really enjoyed their relationship and how they unite against those who may write them off.

I was looking forward to reading this as I have read some Kathy Reichs in the past but not for a long time. it wasn't quite what I expected but i enjoyed it very much. The main character Sunday Night is a troubled young woman, and I enjoyed her dark attitude and approach to life - it was interesting. I liked her relationship with her brother, who is called in to help her with the case. The mystery they are solving is well plotted and tied up nicely. So altogether a satisfying read.

I tried hard to get into this book. i find it hard to believe it was written by Kathy Reichs as I almost stopped reading it after Chapter two. Having persevered to the end, it was an average read and I give it 2 and a half stars. Not as good as her other books. A bit too unbelievable for me. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads, Amazon and Facebook.

I love the Temprence Brennan series by Kathy Reichs and when given the opportunity to read this book with a brand new character I just couldn't say no. And ,sure, I liked it. But I didn't love it. I can't say why, though. Might be that I hade problems with the mc name (Sunday Night) or the different writing style. But, I encourage you all to give it a try and judge for yourself. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Random House!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this stand-alone novel by Kathy Reichs. Unfortunately it missed the mark for me. I was originally a great fan of her Temperance Brennan novels, until they became too formulaic for me and I lost interest. However, I like Reichs' writing style and her knowledge of forensics, and thought that a stand-alone novel would introduce new concepts and characters. But although Sunday initially sounded like a potentially interesting character, she soon wore me down with the huge chip on her shoulder, her sarcastic quips and bad attitude, and I felt that I could not relate to her at all, let alone care about what happens to her. Most other characters also appeared one-dimensional to me, and the plot unoriginal and far-fetched. I persevered for a while, hoping that something would change, but had to concede that I am obviously not the right audience for this book.

Sunday (Sunnie) Night is an ex marine, ex cop with a traumatic childhood who left the police after sustaining a major injury resulting in loss of vision in one eye. She's been licking her wounds on a small island off the coast of South Carolina until an old friend and father figure asks her to look into a cold case of a missing girl. Wealthy widow, Opaline Drucker lost her only daughter and grandson in a terrorist bombing but believes her granddaughter Stella escaped the blast but was abducted by the terrorist group. Knowing what it was like to grow up in a hostile group with strong beliefs, Sunnie agrees to take the case, calling in twin brother Gus (the second Night) to help when times get tough.

This novel is very different from Reich's Temperance Brennan novels, not only for the lack of forensics but also with a very different type of investigator. Sunnie's chip-on-the-shoulder personality is hardly endearing, although her brother Gus is very cool and likeable despite sharing the same childhood as Sunnie. Maybe I'm just a bit over the damaged, but fierce and feisty female investigator that is currently cast in so many contemporary crime series. The plot is strong, if a bit over the top at times, and there is plenty of action as Sunnie and Gus chase around the country tracking down the bombers and looking for Stella. A good read but I probably won't be looking out for another featuring Sunnie.

What a strange name for a character Sunday Night, she is an ex police woman who had serious injuries while on duty, she was offered a desk job but decided that wasn't for her. She lives as a bit of a recluse with just a squirrel for company. When she is offered a job trying to find a young girl who survived a bombing which killed most of her family she decides to give it a go. The job which is very well paid leads her into violent and dangerous encounters. All in all it wasn't a bad read but not one of my best, hence the 3*. Thank you for the ARC

I have read a number of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan books so was intrigued to find out what this stand alone book would be like. An exciting thrilling story it turns out.

Sunday Night is a mysterious and exciting character who we slowly get to know through the book. She has many secrets and we only get to find out a few of them in this book, so I am hoping that Kathy decides to turn this into a series.

As Sunday is no longer a cop, the story is not your typical detective novel. It is fast paced, with the action taking place in numerous states around the US.

I would highly recommend this book if you enjoy mystery thrillers and are looking for something a little different.

I absolutely love Reichs' other series: Temperance Brennan so I was really excited for this one but unfortunately it just fell a bit short for me. Maybe because I held it to her Temperance Brennan series and so I had really high expectations.

It's a good story but it just wasn't something I could get fully invested in.

Reich's has delivered an action-packed story full of snappy dialogue in this stand-alone novel. Sunday Night is the protagonist, an ex-cop with an horrific childhood. She is hired by Opaline Drucker to find her granddaughter who goes missing after the bombing of a school where Drucker's daughter and grandson are killed. Night works with her twin brother Gus to find her and uncover a terrorist gang.

While this is fast paced, I found it hard to connect to the main character Sunday or even envisage what she looked like. I understand the role of her past in shaping such a damaged character but I didn't feel anything for her. Each time I went to pick up where I left off, I had a hard time remembering anything about it. However, the writing is good and the dialogue often witty. But to me this is a holiday read and with its lack of connection is ultimately forgettable.

Having read all the Temperance Brennan books by Kathy Reich's I was worried that I would feel cheated with the start of a new series with new characters and locations, however, Two Nights did not disappoint. I would highly recommend this book, it was a wonderful read.
Sunday Night is a complex character, despite the rather ridiculous sounding name. which sounded less so the more the author revealed her to me. As the book opens we meet Sunday, who lives on Goat Island which can only be reached by boat. There's no phone, no internet, no television and her only company is her rather tame squirrel called Bob. Sunday's connection to the outside world is via her foster father Beau. Sunday ,who'd been in the army and then a police officer, was nearly killed on the job and invalided out, Beau comes to her with a job to try and snap her out of her reclusive ways; find and rescue a missing child.
Kathy Reich's writing is faultless, her characters have such great depth you cannot help but smile when they are happy and hold your breath when they are in danger. I love the way there are seemingly two separate voices telling the story. The shock I felt, as things reveal themselves, meant I could not put this book down. I needed to know what would happen next and now I have finished. I'm ready for Sunday Night's next job.
