Not the kind of the read that will make you feel like you’re in some what of an enchanted forest but a fantastic read all the same. Not knowing a great deal on how taxes work, across the board, this was a great insight and initial help towards understanding tax concepts. I would recommend this book to any inspiring entrepreneur.

As someone who is towards the end of working life I am mostly interested in the information on unearned income, pensions, dividends and the like. Equally the possibilities of reducing my taxable income. I have not read the sections on child allowances and the like with the same diligence.

The books starts with a chapter on "Dealing with HMRC" which has some good useful information in it. I'll not go throw every section however I found none of them lacking in basic information. I'm no expert but equally I found nothing in the way of errors. I certainly found the IHT section useful and fairly clear. Equally the information of Gift Aid was good and I learn something that I had not known from it The section on pension was useful and helped me to make a decision I was already considering.

Allowing for the fact that this book is about taxation and the HMRC it is a fairly easy read, Other that the parts I gained from particularly it does cover every aspect of personal taxation as far as I can see. This does include a good and extensive section on self employment which contains good practical advice as does the rest of the book. The advice on dealing with your tax return (and the consequences!) were very useful even in this internet age.

While mine was a proof copy there were times when the text stated "see chapter X for further details". There were no apparent hyperlinks at that point which I think is a pity. Given that all the information contained is basically available on the Internet somewhere allowing this sort of link in the book would have been very useful.

In the end I will have benefitted from reading this and I would be surprised if others did not too.
