I had to read this book because the author and I both had the same breed of beloved dog, an American Eskimo or "Eskie"! That aside, "Ally's Spiritual Journey" is an uplifting read. Author Mary Carol Ross tackles the questions that are ever-present in most pet owners mind, i.e.: "why do we have animals on this planet," "what is the afterlife of a pet," and much more. This is a very unique book and fascinating as well. I definitely will recommend it to anyone who loves animals and/or has a pet.

The author writes in a personal, conversational style. She begins with explaining about reincarnation and karma, bringing emotional distress from previous lives. She goes on to give examples of how stress and anxieties will manifest in a dog's live and gives some actions and suggestions on dealing with each situation to ease and potentially heal those emotional traumas.

The portion of the book detailing Ally's illness, especially her physical pain, is difficult (emotionally) to read. There is always the uncertainty of when a human gives up too soon or hangs onto hope too long. There is never a clear or totally correct answer.
Her story also reminds us that we are our animal's voice and must listen, ask questions and do our own research. One "authority" voice (or veterinarian) never has all the answers. You must be the advocate.

The remainder of the book deals with the more "woo-woo" aspects of spiritual healing and levels of competence and assistance. You must read with an open mind and will get from it as much as you can accept.

The final chapter is a list of ways you can benefit from a relationship with an animal and ways you can best be a good guardian and companion to them.

I'm sorry - this book just wasn't a good fit for me. I have a hard time with the author's belief system and couldn't finish the book.
My thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
