Kate Granger returns to her parent's home on Lake Superior upon learning that her husband was having an affair. She hopes to use the time there to think about her life and start over. Unfortunately, one morning along with her father and her father's friend, Johnny, she came across the body of a young woman on the shores of the lake. What is most shocking to Kate, is that she recognizes the woman from dreams she has been having. Not only does she recognize the woman, she someone knows that there is a baby tucked in the folds of her nightgown. Kate's reaction to seeing the woman's body and finding the baby, make her a possible suspect in the death of the woman. Side note - I didn't see what was so suspicious about her reaction to seeing the dead woman and baby. I think if I found two dead bodies, I would have a strong reaction as well. Just saying.....

Even though the police are suspicious of her, Kate is still able to travel to Wharton to visit her cousin, Simon and the bed and breakfast he runs out of the former home of their great-grandfather, Harrison Connor. Things get even stranger while she stays in her family's home and as she attempts to put the pieces together, it appears that ghosts of the past are all around her. What secrets might the lake have?

This book is told through the past and the present though alternating chapters. I enjoyed both equally. In the past we meet Addie and Jess. Addie was literally born in the lake and Jess was the one who found her floating in the water. They had a close bond from that time on and no one was shocked when they married years later.

Wendy Webb sets her books about lakes and uses a supernatural element in them. She writes books with plots that are tied to the past, with old mansions, strong female characters, age old secrets, and yes, ghosts. Her books are described as Northern Gothic and do have an eerie and atmospheric feel to them. She also threw in a tragic love story and mysterious lake creature/entity into the mix her as well. This book had a little bit of everything, but it is not scary or creepy (at least in my opinion). It has more of an eerie feel to it, even with the supernatural elements, it won’t scare of have readers sleeping with the lights on. Plus, even with death in the book, there is nothing graphic or gory. There is mystery and the story really revolves around the past and present story-line's and Kate's attempt to make sense of her dreams and experiences.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was invested in learning if Kate would learn the woman's identity. What brought the woman to the lake? Why was she murdered? How does the lake tie in? What is going on in the bed and breakfast? Will the case ever be solved? Why was a missing person's report not filed?

I think this book is perfect for those who enjoy lighter (not scary) Gothic ghost stories involving some mystery, glimpses into the past, romance and intrigue.

A haunted house, a century old mystery, a ghost story, a mysterious creature in the lake, secrets, lies, murder…

A young woman’s body is found on the shore of Lake Superior, holding a dead baby in her arms. Kate Granger whose father has found the body while walking his dog, has seen the dead woman in her dreams before…several times.
The police are baffled. There are no missing persons’ report and they can’t even tell when the woman was murdered.
As Kate’s bizarre dreams continue, she begins her own investigations.

Who is the woman? Why did she have to die? And who is the sinister spirit who doesn’t want Kate to uncover the truth and right the wrongs?

Daughters of the Lake is a well written, albeit a bit drawn-out, atmospheric Gothic story about love, destiny, redemption and reckoning.
A perfect read for this cold season.

Thanks to Wendy Webb, Lake Union Publishing and the NetGalley for providing me with a copy.

DNF 25%. When I read Wendy Webb I expect a certain creep factor. This book started out with a serious bang but very quickly began to read like a romance novel. I can't believe all the background love stories, of both the present day characters and the historical characters, were actually necessary. But then I guess I really don't know since I didn't finish it. I gave it a good try but just found myself bored.

I am so sad to say that I found this one disappointing.

When I saw the cover it was love at first sight and the synopsis was very intriguing. Sadly, that is where my enjoyment ends.

This book is a slow burn. Very slow. I started skimming even before hitting the 20% mark. That is never a good sign. I found because of the slow pace I just couldn't become invested in the *multiple* (too many) characters.

Also, the ending fell completely flat for me. I can suspend disbelief but not to that extent.

I'm an outlier so if you are a fan of the author or love slow gothic romance / mystery with little in the way of suspense then this may be a perfect read for you.

Haunting and beautifully written. The story stays with you long after the last page. Full of twists, you will be left guessing right up until the stunning conclusion. Kate is a great character and everyone needs a Simon in their life.

Daughters of the Lake is a bit of the supernatural and legends about the Great Lakes, as well as a historical fiction.
Kate Granger's father found a body washed up on the shore near their house, a young woman in a white nightgown, and her baby. But when detectives start looking into the identity of the woman, nothing can be found, for as Kate discovers, the woman died over 100 years ago. Who was this woman, and why does Kate dream balut being her at night, even more so when she returns to her cousin's family mansion that is being restored into a hotel? An third floor ballroom filled with trunks of secrets reveals just how entwined Kate's life is with this woman, and only she can uncover the tragedies of her life and reveal her story.
Part mystical supernatural ghost story, part detective story, and part fictional history, Daughters of the Lake is interesting and creative, perfect for anyone whose ever loved hearing the legends and secrets of an old house or large lake.

I liked this book. I enjoy paranormal novels on occasion, and I also like stories that shift back and forth in time, with alternating points of view. When a body washes up on the lake shore by Kate’s parents’ house, Kate becomes a person of interest in the murder. The story quickly becomes even more chilling when the dead lady is found holding a baby. I appreciate the publisher and NetGalley allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Past and present intersect for Kate when she discovers the corpses of a woman and infant in the cold water near her parents' home on Lake Superior. Her life is, to put it mildly, in flux and she's gone there to find some peace but this, this is not what she expected (nor would anyone). Time shifts back and forth to give you more background on this mysterious woman, who has appeared in Kate's dreams. It's a little creepy but never over the top. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

After the end of her marriage, Kate Granger has retreated to her parents’ home on Lake Superior to pull herself together—only to discover the body of a murdered woman washed into the shallows. Tucked in the folds of the woman’s curiously vintage gown is an infant, as cold and at peace as its mother. No one can identify the woman. Except for Kate. She’s seen her before. In her dreams…

One hundred years ago, a love story ended in tragedy, its mysteries left unsolved. It’s time for the lake to give up its secrets. As each mystery unravels, it pulls Kate deeper into the eddy of a haunting folktale that has been handed down in whispers over generations. Now, it’s Kate’s turn to listen. As the drowned woman reaches out from the grave, Kate reaches back. They must come together, if only in dreams, to right the sinister wrongs of the past.

Daughters of the Lake by Wendy Webb was a scary good read! At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this one since I'm not a huge fan of spooky types of books but I'm so glad I read this one. I loved the concept of this story plus I'm from MN so I loved reading about Lake Superior
and the writing was excellent. And that cover art is just stunning!

Between the cover and blurb I was fully intrigued when I first saw Daughters Of The Lake, the promise of a century old mystery connected with the present a big selling point. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Daughers Of The Lake isn't just another mystery story with a dual timeline. No, this story has a lot more to offer. A hint of paranormal with a haunted house and ghost and a touch of supernatural with the lake and its folk tale stories; both adding a very original touch to the story and one of the reasons this story worked so well for me. Daughters Of The Lake mostly reads like a paranormal gothic romance story, with the romance scenes being very well balanced out with the mystery and intrigue of the past. We have a love triangle, and we have cheating, but somehow I wasn't as bothered by those tropes as they weren't the main focus of the story. This perfect balance between the different elements makes it really easy to emerge yourself fully in the story and enjoy the ride. The characters are well developed and even though a few cliches are involved, they were easy to like. Especially Simon and Addie will win over your heart in record time. The writing is also beautiful and really flowed; I really liked the descriptions of both characters and setting. While the setting in Daughters Of The Lake is fictional, it shows that it's based on real memories as it almost feels as if you were visiting those places yourself. I loved the idea of the lake folk tale and all it entails... The paranormal element and Kate's dreams are  intriguing without it going over the top and becoming too much. It was fascinating finding out more about the past and it was great to see how things developed in the present as well. Daughters Of The Lake was without doubt a wonderful read that is worth your time.

From the very first page, this book drew me in. Webb's writing is immersive, whimsical, but chilling. This unexpected mystery/historical fiction/magically-inclined book took me by surprise, then took me on one heck of a ride.

Kate Granger is dealing with breaking up with her husband when she finds a dead woman, a dead infant in her arms, on the lakeshore in front of her house. A woman she's been dreaming about for weeks now. This discovery, and the subsequent mystery of who this woman is, sends Kate on a journey to find her connection to this woman.

One of the best parts of this book, in my opinion, is the omniscient narrator. I haven't read from an omniscient perspective in so long, and the way Webb weaves the stories of Kate, the mysterious woman, and the people surrounding them is beautiful. I also love how, through the narrator, the reader dives into the backstories and histories of so many fascinating characters.

The characters in this book are another one of Webb's strengths. Kate is such a wonderful character--smart, spunky, determined, yet unsure at times--and I loved figuring out the mystery with her. I also loved how Webb dove into the head of the mysterious woman; her story was just as interesting to me as was Kate's. Being able to see the thoughts through Simon's, Kate's cousin, head, as well as many other characters, was a fun twist.

And the mystery! I couldn't put this book down because I just had to know how everything connected! There are so many twists and turns. Webb's foreshadowing is wonderful, and I never guessed the ending (though I could have--the clues were woven in so wonderfully!)

I found the magical elements of the book very interesting as well, though I feel they took a little oomph away form the ending. Despite that, I loved how folklore surrounding Lake Superior was integral, and, because of it, this book felt very different from what I was expecting.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend this to anyone who likes fast, mysterious reads, vivid characters, whimsical prose, and a little mysticism.

After finding out that her husband has been cheating on her, Kate goes back to her childhood home to recover only to find the body of a woman washed up on shore. Tucked into the woman’s clothing is an infant, and no one can identify the mother or child except for Kate, who has been seeing this mystery woman in her dreams. Long ago a love story ended in tragedy and it is time for the lake to give up it’s secrets and Kate is listening.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing in this novel and how quickly you are drawn into this story and the two different times. I loved that it goes between the past and Kate’s relatives in this generation and Kate’s life today. I loved Kate’s character and the different little hard to understand intricacies of her family that got passed down to her. I loved the folktales that were passed along throughout the family as well and how each generation of Daughters of the Lake are drawn to the water and have special gifts. I found the story very easy to keep track of because there aren’t too many characters introduced at once and the further in you get, the easier it is to tell apart Addie’s and Kate’s voices.

I loved the different twists we experienced throughout this novel and how the author slowly doled them out. I loved the dark eerie atmosphere of the novel and the towns around this lake. I actually didn’t see the ending coming quite the way that it did and I enjoyed it all the more for that! This was my first novel from Webb, but after reading this one, it definitely won’t be my last. I didn’t know if I would enjoy this type of ghost story, but I really did and I look forward to reading more like it!

I actually received a copy of this from Amazon First Reads, and I really enjoyed it! I was so engrossed in the stories, and trying to figure out the mystery! I loved the pace of the book and found it very well-written. The ending went a tiny bit too far for me, but I know lots of people will like that aspect. All in all, a very good spooky read!
