Honestly, some of my issues with this Training in Tenderness come down to personal differences of opinion linked to Buddhism, or at least some representations, rather than due to the quality of writing or Dzigar Kongtrul's perspective. My personal experience reading this wasn't always easy because I don't agree with all the perspectives on mental illness, maternalism (which is a favorite metaphor throughout, yet doesn't work for everyone ... mothers are not always loving and tender), and suffering. However, I found some of reflections on kindness, care, and tenderness. I almost wish I had read something that referenced Training in Tenderness rather than Training in Tenderness itself. But! I am not Buddhist!
