It was interesting to learn about how Traditional Wiccan covens work. This book reinforced for me that a coven is not for me. There were parts of it that were a turn of for me - in particular there was a section where she talks about how that she doesn't think that solo practitioners are valid Wiccans because you can't be Wiccan without going through coven initiation. She also states that if you don't have any covens in your area, that basically not everyone gets to have what they want. I know that there are people that feel that way, but I disagree, especially for a religion that takes from other cultures. I did like that she gave info on what things to watch out for to avoid bad covens.

This is the most comprehensive guide to traditional Wicca that I have read. This is not my path, but is an area that I am interested in knowing more about and I feel that this book certainly provided me with a firm basis of information.

This is a well written book explaining the traditional Wiccan ways. This book was written with the beginner in mind. it is not using long drawn out scientific type words it is written in simple to understand language that will make plenty of sense to the reader. The book does focus a lot on Covens. So if you are interested in a Coven or how to join one, this book will give you a lot of useful information.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com and chose to leave this review.

Wiccan, the beginning of our best holidays started here. It's interesting to be able to read more about this way of life.

I have studied Paganism/Neopaganism/Witchcraft/Wicca greater than 50% of my life and that includes reading a lot of books on it. What I want to see is more scholarly works published on the topic. This books hints at that want…some. First the things I liked. I loved the no extra stuff, I do not need a new introduction manual. I also, really loved the eclectic Wicca and then the Coven Wicca layout of the book. That design very unique and believe it works out wonderfully. Now what I dislike. I do not like this…”If you want to understand what people mean by ‘traditional Wicca.” To those that like this title congrats you found something meaningful to you. I did not so much. Like I stated I have study this topic and are a part of it in life. From my personal journey and talking to others on my issue with this title I can say that no two people have the same understanding or definition of traditional Wicca. To claim that you have it is missing a big point in Wicca/Witchcraft in general. Even being part of a Coven does not mean that it’s like a Church and we all have this script that we worship that tells us what to believe and what is law. Again, missing a big part of what we are here. I got the feeling when reading this book. This maybe just me but like I said I don’t’ want more manuals I want something real and that takes a lot of more research. Which brings me to the next thing I do not like sources. It is fine to write a title that is in your opinion alone, which is what this is. However, the way the book is designed made this title seem like it wanted to say more and make more statements. Which cannot be done without sources and I don’t mind a short bibliography at the end of the work. I mean real citations and options. Bring me the voices of others in our religion that also claim that your “traditional Wicca” is what you say.

Thorn Mooney has provided a great insight to Traditional Wicca. As a non-Wiccan Witch, I wanted to have a greater understanding of our sisters and brothers who practice Wicca. But I also wanted to see insight into the root traditions rather than the more common eclectic Wicca we are more familiar with.

This book covers a great range of insights into Wicca at its roots. I would strongly recommend it for a beginner, but also for advanced practitioners of other Pagan and Witchcraft traditions who wish to have a greater insight into Wicca.

Traditional Wicca gives a description of the history and modern practices of Wicca. It is told in a straight forward manner, the author explains wicca in an easy to follow manner. It focuses on covens in particular, and I found this to be interesting reading.
This is a terrific book for anyone interested in learning more on wicca and is perfect for complete novices who are only beginning their journey.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. For more reviews please visit my blog:

I found so much information on Traditional Wicca. I am a solitary witch from many generations and I just found out that our believes are not so different, I, as many do, always thought it was all about "do no harm and the law of three". Reading this makes me understand that there is so much more to it and that there is much we have in common than I ever thought. Thank you for taking the time to write this book explaining the things I have wondered about. So much misinformation has been thrown about. Watching for red flags from people wanting to join your coven is a must that is not always discussed. I'm solitary for that reason, had a bad experience. Wish I had known what to have looked for prior to that. This book title is Traditional Wicca but would be of interest for any type of Witch or Wiccan. I received this book from Net Galley and Llewellyn for an honest review and no compensation otherwise.

The writing is wonderful, the author never talks down to the reader and instead feels like they're right there talking to you. I enjoyed this book even though it was not quite what I was expecting. It really focuses on covens more than anything else and I have no desire to be with a coven, tried once and it was not for me. So if you're looking into a coven, wondering how to go about it, how to even find one in the first place: this book is for you. Otherwise... there really isn't much more here.

*Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review*

This book was very informative. I always love reading about others religious outlook on Wicca. It always brings me a calm and deep connection with our religion and the author who wrote it. The book was very nice and I will recommend it to my friends and family. It will also be a gift to my daughter. This book has inspired me to look to for a coven in my area.

I misunderstood what this book was about when I originally picked it up - I expected more info about what exactly Traditional Wicca is and what it's practitioners do; however, this is more of a guide for people already familiar with it who are looking to join a coven of practicing Traditional Wiccans. For that purpose, this is a really thorough and thoughtful guide, but I was a bit lost at points without the more basic information. That being said, this was a really interesting read.

I cannot praise this book enough! At last!! A book about Traditional Wicca. No filler. All killer information. Written in such a friendly and straightforward way which reminds me of the Silver RavenWolf books which those of you who know me know I am a freaking huge fan of. It's chock-full of helpful insights and nuggets of wisdom for the Seeker. I especially love how it outlines the importance of knowing what to expect when you approach a group for training and the rule of self-protection. If something doesn't feel right or goes against your belief then you are free to leave and walk away! Don't be forced into anything by anyone. It is a book that does not force an agenda. It gives freely of its knowledge in the hopes that it inspires and aids the Seeker in progressing on in their journey. It discusses the real workings of a Coven, Initiation, Hierarchy, Lineage and lots more in the Traditional Wiccan sphere. This book is going to be a great primer for the Seeker and I would have been so happy to have had this book 20+ years ago when I first started on my journey. I'm grateful to have read it now.

Traditional Wicca by Thorn Mooney
Review by Dawn Thomas

216 Pages
Publisher: Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd.
Publication Date: July 8, 2018

Nonfiction (Adult), Religion, Spirituality

Thorn Mooney wrote her first book on witchcraft when she was a teenager before heading off to college. Later she realized she did not know everything she thought she did on the subject and began searching. As a Dianic, I am always interested in learning about other traditions. Thorn is a Gardnerian and practices traditional Wicca / Witchcraft. She explains the misconceptions people have about them as a group.

In this book, the author takes the time to delve into many topics under the Wicca / Witchcraft umbrella. She discusses the origins of Wicca by Gerald Gardner and his influences from folklore, magic and his travels. She includes information on the structure and positions within covens along with its function. There is an exercise with a list of questions for prospective initiates.

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning more about an initiatory path in traditional Wicca. I liked the author’s writing style. It was easy to read and understand.
