I love how this book introduces famous impressionist painters to students, and think that it would be a wonderful accompaniment to an art museum (even if that art museum didn't have these particular paintings).

This short non-fiction title is geared toward a child who is beginning to express interest in learning about art history. The basic concepts and techniques of impressionism are briefly described and introduced in this volume. Examples of impressionist paintings are reproduced and very much add to the book's appeal. The young reader is then invited to paint her own work of art. I found this to be a good introduction but hoped for a bit more depth. A good volume for a school's library.

The I Like Art series is designed to make art history approachable for all audiences, but especially for children. This particular book focuses on the art style of Impressionism. It does a wonderful job of explaining the basics for the art style; the key points that separate it from other styles, the leading artists of the time, and how the movement ultimately ended up affecting or creating other styles of art.
The artists focused on in this novel include Eduard Manet and Claude Monet. There are plenty of other artists to discover and learn about of course, but these two are a great start. Hopefully reading about these two artists will get you (or your child) looking into to other artists of the Impressionist period.
At the end of the book there’s even a little section called “your turn” which encourages children to make their own Impressionist painting. It includes some basic questions to get them started (what will the painting be of? What time of day will it be? Etc). This is actually a really cute idea, and I’m glad they included it.

Nice into book on the Impressionists for young kids. The book might have covered a few more artists, but I guess 2 are a start for many kids. I am glad art work of more artists were included at the end. And the glossary was a nice addition. It would make a good early reader.

A fine introduction to impressionism and what makes it different from previous styles of art (though I would have appreciated some side-by-side comparisons). A couple famous impressionists are highlighted (Manet and Monet).

(Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.)

"I Like Art: Impressionism is a great introduction to the period, techniques and artists of the Impressionist period. The descriptions and history is written in a way that is easily understood and interesting. The different works shown come through on the kindle copy very vividly and lovely. The "Your Turn" section has questions about the students potential piece that follow the major points of description of Impressionism and help to guide the reader to create their own piece in the impressionist style. I highly recommend this as a introduction to children of Impressionism as a whole or as a intro to Monet, or Manet.
