I voluntarily requested this ARC and in return I will give a fair and honest review. While I do regularly enjoy Christina McKnight books, this one was, in my opinion, a bit weak. The story line was quite different to your normal romance and I was looking forward to reading it. Do not get me wrong, it was ok. I just felt that the tale could have been much more.

4.5 stars!

Sinclair Chambers, Earl of St. Seville aka Sin is "rescued" by James Lane, Earl of Desmond when James sees Sin being attacked in an alley. He brings Sin back to his carriage and learns that he is the son of an old friend. He insists on bringing him home and having his injuries tended. Sin just wants to return to his rented rooms and await his meeting with Coventry at the Wicked Earls' Club.

He goes with the earl and while waiting for the doctor, a beautiful young woman comes in the room, when she asks who he is and his purpose in her home, he flees. But it will not be the last time he sees the lovely Lady Patience Lane.

Patience's mother was the famed pugilist Ivory Bess before marrying the earl, she died too young because of complications related to her fighting. Patience has made it her life's work to inform and warn others of the dangers of fighting, to the point where she is almost a social outcast. She meets Sin again when he defends her at a ball against Lord Holstrom. Holstrom is the man Sin is in London to meet. He hopes Holstrom will set up prize fights for him so he can earn money to save his family and the people of his estate from destitution.

Patience waits for Sin outside his rooms, she wants to thank him for defending her. He is gracious and kind to her and when they part ways, she follows him. She is horrified to see him fighting and knows he will lose. Despite her quest, she knows a lot about fighting from time spent with her mother and at one time she even considered fighting herself. But watching her mother die turned her away from the sport. After the fight, Patience goes to Sin and takes him back to his rooms. She learns why he is fighting and makes a deal with him, she will train him, but in return he must abide by her rules and give up fighting. He agrees, but still intends to follow through with his plan.

Patience teaches Sin the art of fighting, but when she realizes he has not been honest, she is heartbroken. Can Sin win back the woman he now knows means the world to him and still save his people? Can Patience forgive him and let go of her past pain? Will her brothers ever get invited to the Wicked Earls Club?

I have read this author before and not really cared for her writing, in fact, I swore never to read her work again, so when I realized that I would be reading her WEC for our blog, I was not really thrilled, but recently I read an anthology and I really liked her contribution, so I decided to read this book with an open mind and I am grateful that I did, because Sinclair Chambers is probably one of the best heroes I have ever read, I really loved him. This book has a few typos, some misused words, a title error, no steam and a fair dash of angst, but I loved it, Patience and Sinclair are characters that will not be easy to move on from, they are perfectly imperfect and I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is the eleventh book in the Wicked Earls' Club series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone (as they all can).

Lady Patience Lane, daughter of the Earl of Desmond and legendary boxer Ivory Bess, grew up learning to fight, not how to mind her manners. Following her mother’s untimely death she’s determined to save other families from the same heartache, by teaching others about the dangers of boxing. Sinclair Chambers, the Earl of St. Seville and known as “Sin” to his cohorts, inherited an insolvent estate. He has to make money, and fast, or his tenants & family will starve. The prize purses from the bare knuckle fighting will go a long way to solving his problems, if he can win them.
Another very good read in the Wicked Earls series & a full length novel. The characters are very well portrayed, Patience is shunned & scorned by most of the ton because of her feelings about fighting & the injuries it can cause but Sin sees her as a beautiful, caring woman. Sin is desperate to help all the people he holds dear. The pair meet & after his first fight Patience insists on being his trainer, the pair are attracted to each other but it takes nearly losing each other for them to realise how they feel. I love the authors books & this was up to her usual standard & a great addition to the series.

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Publisher's Description:

When a bluestocking spinster sets her mind to something…

Lady Patience Lane, daughter of the Earl of Desmond and legendary boxer Ivory Bess, grew up learning to fight, not how to mind her manners. She always expected she’d become a trainer like her mother, until injuries from the ring led to her mother’s untimely death. Now, she’s determined to save other families from the same heartache, by teaching others about the dangers of boxing. Nothing could bring her back to the world she left—until she meets a mysterious stranger who sets her pulse racing.

And a dark, dangerous lord interferes…

Sinclair Chambers, the Earl of St. Seville and known as “Sin” to his cohorts, inherited an insolvent estate. He has to make money, and fast, or his tenants will starve. The prize purses from the bareknuckle mills will go a long way to solving his problems, if he can win them. To be a success in the ring, he needs the best trainer, and Patience Lane is the best there is—all he has to do is convince her that he’ll only fight once.

They just might find their happily ever after in each other’s arms.

The more time Sin and Patience spend together, the closer they become. Soon, Sin’s thoughts are less about winning in the ring, and more about winning Patience’s heart. But can a relationship born out of wicked deception stand the test of time?

My Thoughts:

This is the third book I have read in this multi-author series. There are a total of 12 with only three more that have not yet released.

So far this one is the cleanest/sweetest one I have read.

Lady Patience name is deceiving. She is by no means patient with members of the ton who ignore her edicts and wishes to keep others from suffering like her mother did.

Sinclair Chambers, Earl of St. Seville came to London with one thought in mind... To earn enough money boxing to save his estate and his people.

Patience's father brings him home after finding him being beaten and calls for a doctor to tend his injuries.

Hearing noises that wake her Patience thinks her brothers have returned home but instead finds a half dressed man she doesn't know occupying her brother's bedchamber. rather than identify himself he climbs from the second story window to disappear into the night.

After this inauspicious beginning our couple become enamored with one another however they take no steps toward intimacy. Instead Patience takes over the training of Sin so he is more proficient at boxing.

Instead of a hot romp in the sheets this book includes a story of lies by omission and feelings of betrayal.

Will our couple get past the untruths or will Sinclair's lies lead to the end between the couple?

I gave this novella 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 1 of 5 flames. No intimacy ever develops between our couple.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read and review. I also received a link to an ARC at Bookfunnel from the author.
This in no way affected my opinion of this novella which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Earl of St Seville by Christina McKnight
I received this book from the Netgalley for an honest review.
I loved the names of these characters!! Sin and Patience. These names totally go with these characters and also totally do not go with these characters…LOL
Sin is exactly that…Sinful to look at but he is not the rakeshell you would assume he is given he is sneaking into Patience brothers room in the middle of the night.
Patience is as patience when she wants to help someone but really doesn’t have patience when people don’t listen to her…LOL
The couple meet under less than normal circumstances and then meet again at a soiree when Patience is trying to get people to listen to her. She is worried about the dangers of prizefighting that the men of the ton seem to enjoy betting on and participating in. Patience really is a forward-thinking woman in this book and I enjoyed it.
When she saves Sin from his disastrous and then offers to train him as long as he conforms to her rules. I loved it. I mean what kinda women tells a man what to do in this day and age??? Well Patience sure does tell Sin the business…too bad he isn’t being totally honesty with her about his agreements.
When the plot thickens, and we see the couple have a huge disagreement about his prizefighting days, I loved loved loved that he was the one to chase her with her brothers tagging along.
I loved so much about this book. It was so different from any Historical story I have read. Patience is a woman with a strong mind and a very strong sense of self. She was soooo refreshing to me too see and read about. Sin was also a great character. He is doing all he knows…fighting. He wasn’t educated, and he doesn’t know any other way to fill his coffers to save his lands. He too is a much different hero that we would normally read about.
