I have read most if not all of James Patterson's books and he never disappoints. This was another thrilling read, which I had to nurse out... didn't want it to finish!

James Patterson has a reputation for fast paced story lines with plenty of action, and the occasional twist. NYPD Red 5 does not let down.

Written in a style that fans will love.

NYPD Red 5 By James Patterson and Marshall Karp

Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald work for NYPD Red, a police department that has all of the resources it needs and that’s because it’s there to protect New York’s most wealthy and powerful citizens. Many of them seem to attract trouble, including the new mayor. When Zach and Kylie are assigned as her bodyguards at a fundraising event, they can do nothing but watch as one of the four main benefactors is blown to pieces by a bomb on the podium. It’s not long before it’s clear that the other three might have something to worry about. But Zach and Kylie have other cases to deal with as well, especially the murder of a high profile film producer in rather shocking circumstances. The repercussions of both crimes could be enormous and the city is terrified at the thought of a loose bomber in its midst. The pressure is on.

If only Zach and Kylie weren’t so easily distracted. There’s a history between them. They might each have moved on with different partners but that doesn’t stop Zach taking a keen interest in Kylie’s personal business. And that puts him in very dangerous territory indeed.

NYPD Red 5 is the first of this series by James Patterson and Marshall Karp that I’ve read. In fact, it’s been many years since I’ve read a James Patterson thriller. I wish that I hadn’t stayed away so long. I absolutely loved this book. I picked it up when I was feeling tired and not quite sure what to read and I didn’t move until I’d finished it. It’s a very fast read but it’s also so enjoyable and entertaining.

I loved Zach and Kylie! Their relationship is a curious one and I enjoyed finding out about it but most of all I loved their charisma, camaraderie, wicked sense of humour and their dedication to the job. Kylie in particular made me laugh but she also made my jaw drop on the occasion when she does something ridiculously brave. Zach has his moments, too. There are some great scenes between them, my favourite being a luxurious flight on a private jet. They might be investigating major, high profile cases but they still know where their priorities lies and they have a lot to do with maintaining a private life. And enjoying some good food and drink when it’s available.

But their commitment to the job is admirable, and to doing what’s right. The two might not necessarily always go together. I was gripped by the cases in this book. There’s so much going on, so many threads to unravel and a lot of red herrings. I don’t want to say anything more about them except for one thing – I absolutely loved the ending!

I love a good thriller and James Patterson knows just how to deliver one. I’ll be reading this series from now on. I need to keep up with Zach and Kylie.

James Patterson’s NYPD Red series is another favourite of mine and is something different given that it focuses on police officers who are tasked with protecting New York’s elite. It’s hard to believe that this is the fifth book in the series already. It was an enjoyable read and without doubt one of my favourites in the series so far. I love Zach and Kylie and felt that the storyline here was one of the best out of the five books.

As is usually the case with a James Patterson novel, there’s multiple different story arcs to contend with and thankfully it didn’t become too confusing. The rich and famous of New York are gathered at a public event when a bomb goes off, a bomb designed to kill only one person. With the mayor also being at this event, it becomes one of the most high-profile cases of Zach and Kylie’s careers and needless to say their superiors want it solved ASAP. Meanwhile on Roosevelt Island a well-known film producer is found dead and our duo at NYPD Red soon have their work cut out for them working these two cases.

One thing that has always been prominent in this series is the political element to NYPD Red. Here in NYPD Red 5 we see Zach questioning just what their role is in protecting the elite and also the everyday public of the city. Do their superiors want justice or do they just want the crimes solved in any way possible? It makes for an uncomfortable read in places and features some hateful characters who make you sit and think about whether that justice should be served or not. It’s easy to see why they were targeted and why somebody would want revenge against them and it leaves a sour taste in the mouths of the two detectives who must work alongside these people to find out who was responsible.

I enjoyed following along with the various cases, and enjoyed that our duo had a brief sojourn in another country which added a new dynamic to the story. In the case of the murdered film-producer, we have a timely case in the wake of the #MeToo movement and this is a storyline that could have been lifted straight from the newspapers. It makes for shocking reading and allows a gripping tale to play out on the page with a few twists and turns along the way. Both storylines here are very strong and had me gripped. There’s a lot going on in NYPD Red 5 and it was a whole lot of fun reading it all. Returning readers will know about the relationship between Zach and Kylie and whilst it should be stale by now, there’s some developments here that may finally offer that closure that was needed. As characters go they are two of my favourites to read about. NYPD Red 5 is a great addition to this series that I hope we will still be reading into double figures. It was one of my favourites in the series so far and I can’t wait to read the next one.

Fantastic! Really enjoyed this fast paced thriller. It was full of twists and non stop action. This series gets better with every book and it kept me turning the pages hanging on to every word. It was exciting, tense and explosive. A bloody good read!

I have read all of the books now in the NYPD Red series and for me the series is getting better and better. I really enjoyed this one and it is only the second of the books in the series (the other being the one when we very first met Zach and Kylie) that I have given 5 stars!

I really enjoyed the plot, the pace was great and I am already a massive fan of the short punchy chapters that keep the storyline tight and focussed.

This was a fun and easy read for me, I loved the suspense and the ending for me was great - just what was needed for the book. 5 stars!!
