This book was so stinkin' cute!
I loved the illustrations, they were lifelike and gorgeous and set a nice tone for the book. I think the story was great, friends were made, lessons were learned, and it had a great ending.

I had my six-year-old son read this to me, and we both had a very good time. The theme is simple: how to make friends. As usual, DiCamillo adds a lot of emotion and depth with her focus on little details only the specific character knows; in this case, Rosie, the dog, looks in her empty silver dish each morning after breakfast and says hello to the dog she sees looking back at her, but that dog doesn't answer. When she gets to go to the dog park, she's nervous and, at first, doesn't want to play with any of the dogs there.

It's a touching story, simply but wonderfully told, and the accompanying illustrations by Harry Bliss fill out the understated story well.
