This was just a sneak peek, so I can't review the entire book. I did enjoy the first glimpse I got. We are introduced to Riley, recently deceased, by her best friend Mila. I enjoyed Mila as a character. I like how she wasn't content to just let things lie when she was not satisfied that her best friend had committed suicide. I like that she's a girl of action and isn't afraid. It felt like most of the other high school characters are going to be stereotypical cliches, so she will be mostly on her own. However, Riley's brother Xander seems like a promising character and possibly a future romance? There was a bit of language, quite a few F bombs. I can't give much more of a review since it was just a sneak peek.

Interesting take on a YA whodunit with a splash of the paranormal. I only had the sampler to go on, but it left me wanting to read more. This one's going in my Ingram cart.

This was a fast read and while I usually enjoy YA books, I just couldn't get into this one. Maybe Im just done with the whole "mean girls" thing.

I loved this excerpt, I thought that it was a lot of fun. I'm definitely buying the book once it comes out in stores.

This book preview was intriguing. It seems like it will be an absolutely heartbreaking book when read as a whole. I went into this preview expecting a fantasy novel, but the chunk we were given didn't give us the chance to see any risen dead, which I found to be a bit disappointing. I did feel like the writing style was quickly paced and would be really fun to see on a larger scale than this small preview.

This is just a review of the sampler and does not pertain to the full text. The sampler was excellent and I really enjoyed it.

I got a sampler of this on NetGalley, and I really enjoyed it, but even if I wasn't on a book buying ban, at £9.49 for the ebook it's well out of my price range.

Mila Flores is not undead, at least not as such. She is, however, a Mexican-American Wiccan who calls things as she sees them and isn't afraid to express herself. And that's what she does when her best friend commits suicide. She suspects foul play, that this isn't a random act. The fact that other students have died solidifies her resolve. Which is why she does the most natural thing in the world: come up with a spell that would bring her friends back to life, and then get the answers straight from the sources. Easy peasy, right?

Undead Girl Gang is such a funny and unique book! It reminds me of MaryJanice Davidson's Undead and Unwed series and Kelley Armstrong's Dime Store Magic. I laughed out loud often. The humor is dry and cutting, full of wit and insight, and I couldn't help feeling a flicker of envy. Lily Anderson has created a refreshing YA that's meant to be enjoyed. There are some serious topics at hand, and Anderson does a great job balancing these serious subjects with humor. I had never read a novel from a Wiccan's point of view before. I've read fantasy novels with witches in them — or with witches as protagonists — but never about a Wiccan. If you want a well-written and entertaining YA to devour this summer, this is the one for you. I give Undead Girl Gang five delicious Mocha Swirl frapuccinos!

I recieved an excerpt for this book from the oublishers and NetGalley, in return for an honest review/reccomendation.

At first it seemed a little cliche, it even gave me some PLL vibes at first. After losing her best friend, and two other students suspiciously, our main character goes into Nancy Drew mode. She cant get the school, adults, or police to agree with her so she takes matters into her own hands. When younger she and her best friend began practicing magic, wica etc. The neighbor hood magic store helped them with this. She remembers a certain spell and hopes to complete it and find the killer of her friend and the others. Until things go horribly wrong and her friends come back from the dead!! Definitely a funny story, it was a very fun read!! I like the realism behind the magic and ritual, and her characterization is perfect!! Love her Daria attitude!! If your looking for a funny summer read this is it for sure. Also some great friendship stuff in there as well

I loved this preview of the first six chapters of Undead Girl Gang. Right from the start, I found it funny and connected with Mila. This book combines YA, mystery, and magic, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the story.

A fun little concept with offbeat characters who go beyond the normal Caucasian stereotypes. Hard to tell where it will go and if the author can sustain the mystery and the fun, though, since this was only the excerpt.

My Thoughts:
I received the first six chapters of this book and I have been seeing this on other sites like Goodreads and the Bookly summer 2018 YA reading list. With just six chapters, I did not get as far as the publisher description, but I get the basic premise: teen protagonist and Wiccan Mila Flores, the pariah who does not give a shit about what people think of her, is pissed off that her best friend Riley is included with the other two students as committing suicide when Mila is sure that she was murdered. By the end of chapter six, Mila is collecting items to cast a resurrection spell.

I think this is a girl book for those who like a dark, mystery with a slightly neurotic main character. If you are a reader who finds the humor in Heathers, this book is for you.

Description:
Veronica Mars meets The Craft when a teen girl investigates the suspicious deaths of three classmates and accidentally ends up bringing them back to life to form a hilariously unlikely--and unwilling--vigilante girl gang.

Meet teenage Wiccan Mila Flores, who truly could not care less what you think about her Doc Martens, her attitude, or her weight because she knows that, no matter what, her BFF Riley is right by her side.

So when Riley and Fairmont Academy mean girls June Phelan-Park and Dayton Nesseth die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone's explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders. But they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer...before the killer strikes again.

The cover and blurb caught my attention. I only received a small sample to read from NetGalley. It was engaging, and I'd be interested in reading the entire story when it's available.

to discover their murderer...before the killer strikes again.

I have been excited about this book since I discovered it on Goodreads. I love the cover… very fun and very 90’s looking. I read the synopsis and thought this sounds interesting. I preordered on audible as soon as I saw it was available and then I started counting down the days. This book was not a disappointment. I loved it. It was full of emotion, mystery, creepy stuff, zombies in a way. It was so well put together. I loved the writing and the characters. I just loved the book.

Mila and Riley are best friends, inseparable. That is until the day that Riley is found dead in the river. The death is ruled a suicide, but Mila knows Riley would never kill herself. She wasn't sad or depressed. She had no signs. Mila knew Riley wouldn't do this. So Mila decides to take things into her own hands and calls back Riley from the dead. She hopes to hear from Riley what really happened. But Riley comes back with no memory and she comes back with a couple of friends. Two other girls, June and Dayton, were found dead a few days before Riley. They two were ruled suicides. Now all four girls are determined to find out who is their murderer and the truths about their deaths.

I read what the book was about a long time ago, I knew I wanted to read it, but it’s been so long, I kind of forgot what it was about. Which is a good thing? The little Goodreads snippet doesn’t begin to cover how much depth is in this book. I think I thought it would be more comedic. There were some funny moments… like the zombie girls back from the dead. They were so funny. Really though this book is about loss and about hurt and kind of dark at times. It really had a great mixture of everything.

The mystery was well done. I love a good mystery and really I didn’t have this one figured out until it was pretty obvious and I still didn’t want to believe it. It was shocking when it was all revealed. Although the reveal was just a tiny part, the how and the why yup just a tiny part. The story was more about the dead girls and their true selves, about knowing someone, about caring for others. That is the main point of the story. The investigation of the mystery was fun too. Spells and what not. It was a great story to watch unfold. The pacing was spot on. The read was smooth and effortless. Nothing left questioned at the end. It all came together well.

The characters were for sure the bright spot of the book. I loved all of them. They were all so different and unique. The main character, Mila, was a bit whiny at times but she just lost her best friend, Riley. She was messed up from it. It has been recorded as a suicide, but she is sure it was murder. She is determined to solve the murder and find out who killed her friend. Now before her friend died, two other girls were discovered hanging. So the town things there was a suicide pact. This is why they figured her friend killed herself too. So she does a spell to bring back her best friend and in turn, brings back all three dead girls. So now we have three dead girls, alive sort of. June, Dayton, and Riley.

These four make the funniest group of crime solvers. June was the mean girl. She made up rumors, made a life for Riley and Mila hell, and she was a bit bossy and entitled. Dayton was also a popular girl and friends with June but she was different. She was kind of clueless and always positive. She went along with what June did because they were best friends, but really she wasn’t mean. I think sometimes she didn’t even understand that June was mean. She was clueless but so funny and endearing and joyful…even dead. She was my favorite. Riley was sarcastic and kind of Debbie downer. Of course, if I found out I was dead.. I would be too. So together they don’t mesh well but they somehow form a friendship all four of them. The more the story progresses Mila finds out that the lives of all the girls weren’t what they seemed and truths come out to slowly unravel what happened in the days these girls died including why and how they actually died.

The story always includes some pretty angry witches, disturbing rotting corpse, romance, and so much more. It’s a good read.

Such a balanced and exciting read. Loved it.
