A romance with a twist.

I picked this up thinking it was a straight up romance but I was pleasantly surprised that it had a bit more depth to it.

You meet Grant Thorne a Billionaire and son of a US Senator. After he watched his sister have a fight with her boyfriend then take off in the snow he followed to bring her back, what he wasn’t expecting was to get knocked off his snowmobile and be badly injured.

You then meet Blaire and Liam two people with a dark past who come across Grant and take him to a log cabin to heal. There is immediate fireworks between Blaire and Grant but due to Blaires past can they have a future?!

Follow through Blaire and Grants romance with some fireworks along the way what with having to deal with an overprotective male but also the Russian Mafia is trying to get to Blaire but why?

There is some action in this book which shows Blaire as a strong woman and she takes not crap from Grant.

Enjoyed this book, I do get a little fed up with the immediate attraction between the lead male and female character but this was well written and kept me gripped what with the action and secrets that you wanted to know throughout the book.

It was well written and I liked that even though Blaire faced heartache and loss through the book she was still fiercely independent and strong.

This was my first Victoria Paige book, but since reading it, I decided to start on her Guardians series and purchased the first book. I really enjoyed this story. Cocky self assured Grant thought he could figure out a way to get whatever he wanted, including the beautiful but secretive Blaire, who helps rescue him from hypothermia. Blaire certainly has reciprocal feelings for Grant, but she knows it can never be forever. She convinces herself it can be for now, but an unfortunate event paints a target on her back she doesn't want to share with Grant. Her disappearance only makes Grant want her even more, and he will do anything and stand up to anyone to have her.

I loved the mix of suspense and hot chemistry throughout this story. Blaire was self sufficient and didn't really need a hero, but Grant filled in the gaps, and together they just fit.

Net Galley provided an ARC.

This love story is a fight against Russian mafia. Grant is saved from freezing in snow by two isolated people. Ine is beautiful Blair to whom is he immediately attracted. At first Blair is fighting Grant but after discussing with her only friend she starts a relationship with Grant. But not everything goes smoothly secrets are revealing and many lives are at risk. Both Grant and Blair are well developed I liked the chemistry between them and it is explosive when consumed. Grant had a problem with communication when he was angry and I understand why he received the cold shoulder from Blair. Time heals all wounds and so is the case from Blair but Russian mafia has yet another plan for Blair. This time she fights and Grant learns to stand down and let professionals do their job. It is a great suspense love story with great passion and attraction between Blair and Grant. I liked both characters although Grant was a little bit of arrogant and stubborn in the end find the way to cope with his feelings. I also loved the action in the end and that Blair fighter in her.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for Netgelly

Grant awoke after a snowmobile accident to his Angel of Mercy. Blaire is an artist and a recluse living in the mountains when she sees Grant in the snow she knows she can’t just leave him there. Sparks fly between Gran and Blaire; can he convince her to leave her mountain and will he find out what she is hiding? This is a fast-paced read with plenty of drama and suspense. I liked the characters; the chemistry is great and the story held by interest throughout. A Good Read.

Captivating!

There was lots of intrigue and twists to keep me interested but I found Grant nearly insufferable at times but loved Blaire.

I voluntarily read an advanced copy.

A typical romantic novel where rich guy meets poor woman.
I found the plot a bit week in places, following standard plot and description of vharacterd.

When I requested a copy of this book, I went into it blind not ever having heard of Victoria Paige. I did a quick at my goodreads reviews (mostly positive) and said "yeah, I'll give this a try. I am so, so, glad I did. I truly enjoyed it. Of course there were the usual alpha male posturing (sometimes a little too much) but overall the h was no wilting flower and the H was well and truly hooked on her. I must say I have looked at Ms. Paige’s other books and I am thanking my kindle unlimited subscription stars.

I requested this book because the description sucked me in. What’s not to like? An alpha CEO from a political family is rescued by a reclusive artist in the Colorado mountains. As Grant pulls Blaire into his public life, he realizes she’s harboring secrets that could get them both killed.

Unfortunately, this book didn’t really deliver for me. The book switches back and forth between Grant and Blaire’s point of view. It was a little strange for me because Blaire’s point of view is first person and Grant’s point of view is third person. The author doesn’t spend a lot of time developing details or characters. If not for the cover, readers would have no idea what the heroine even looks like. For me, there were gaping holes in the plot development that left me struggling to keep up. There was also insta-everything. Insta-love, insta-sex. The plot moved way too quickly. In the blink of an eye, the reclusive heroine leaves her Colorado cabin for Boston. There’s no description of how she settles in….boom……flash forward several months and she’s out sketching in the middle of town.

I found myself skimming when I got to about 26%. I was curious enough to want to know what happened to the characters but not invested enough to sink much more time into it.

Captive Lies by Victoria Paige is the story of Grant Thorne and Blaire Callahan.
Blair ends up helping to save Grant when he is found in the snow. From their they start to have feelings for each other. Blair unknown to Grant has been hiding from a dangerous past but takes a leap of faith to be with Grant. But then her past worries start to come back to her and she leaves with Grant in pursuit.
Loved both characters and hope to read more books by Ms. Paige!

I had a hard time trying to get through this book, but at the same time I kept coming back to it.

This book has a very strong Alpha male. Grant has certainly a strong character. He knows what he wants and is not afraid to go after it. While sometimes this may have you hungering for more, it kind of got annoying at times. He was pretty selfish and very obsessive. Not to mention insecure.

Blaire was your sweet, gentle, beautiful heroine that we love and yet many times just makes us want to scream. She is very trusting. Wants to please..sort of like a puppy dog.

The story line was interesting. This whole, crime, suspense, wrapped into a romance package deal. I was bothered that their love story evolved so fast, but I think it many ways because there was this suspense story that the author wanted to share with us. I think in the end, it was what made me keep going. I was curious to learn more about Blaire's story. How she got there. Grant was just the annoying part of it.

The sex scenes are intense, and if you have a hard time with it evolving so fast, this may turn you off. There was a missing spark that builds up the chemistry and makes the attraction hum.

In Captive Lies by Victoria Paige, Grant Thorne is in shock that Blaire Callahan has suddenly left him. As far as they have come in their relationship, he knows that that there has to be has to be more to it than her just up and leaving. He feels as if she fled and is more than determined to find out why. He goes to her secluded cabin and discovers something shocking that punches the air right out of his lungs. There are more than a few twists and turns that hereafter take place while Grant strives to keep Blaire safe.

Despite the mystery encompassing this story, this reader found a couple of sore points. The story vacillates between Grant's and Blaire’s viewpoints, with both first and third person narratives. Secondly, the story is extremely explicit, and I felt as if it was often over-the-top. This, in my opinion, affected the mystery/thriller aspect of the story.

Grant Thorne gets what he wants. The CEO of Thorne Industries and the son of a Senator, he sees the next thing he wants to acquire the beautiful reclusive artist who saved his life in a blizzard.Blaire Callahan had escaped her dangerous past to create a new life for herself. Rescuing a handsome stranger was not part of her plan, and the undeniable chemistry between them is even more alarming. When I started reading I couldn't put it down I read the book in one day.Victoria is magnifysent writer.I cannot wait to read more of her books.Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this book.

Captive Lies,  Victoria Paige

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Mystery & Thrillers, Romance

I really liked the sound of this story, and to begin I was enjoying it but....the the Russian Mafia slant came into play, and though I know there are readers who love stories with a Mafia bent I'm not one. Fortunately the Mafia were the bad guys, I really can't take it when they're passed of as good guys really, just misunderstood...

I loved Blaire, she was in the situation she was through her birth, nothing she could have done about it, unless she was prepared to knuckle down and have her life run by the Russians. Liam, her friend and protector was a great guy too, and he gave her the training to protect herself. I so like that, when a main character doesn't have to depend on a man to save her but can hold her own in a fight. Grant, alpha male in the extreme and for me he was at times too pushy, too overly controlling, bordering on abusive in his need to control. Blaire is a tough girl, she's survived despite having some bad people out to get her and though he wants to protect her he shouldn't expect her to hand over all control to him and sit back and ...well, what? Shop? Watch daytime TV? That's just not Blaire, she paints but can't spend all day every day doing that.

I was doing OK with the story, Grant's obsessive personality and tendency to act like a jerk aside, but it got slowly more overly complex, with distrust everywhere, and threats from all quarters. That can be fun, keeping readers on their toes but can also mean a story gets overly complex. I had guessed one person who was not who they seemed, I wasn't totally sure but looking back all the clues were there, I just wasn't sure I was reading them properly – that's good, I like to be surprised. Then the mafia and political threats began to overlap, technology that seemed improbable crept in and was used to make scenes work that wouldn't otherwise, and it seemed a little too far fetched for me. I do need to believe in a story, and though technology has advanced hugely, and of course this is fiction I felt that some parts were a little hard for me to believe in. It seemed if you'd got money – and Grant had – then anything could be had for a price.

I wasn't convinced by Cal, I kind of thought something along those lines would happen, there's hints thrown in all along but I was disappointed that it worked that way – more of that improbable technology for me. I want to believe things could happen that way if this were a true story and that...nope, I can't fall for it.

It sounds like I hated the story, and that's just not true, these were just niggles, big niggles, for me and overall I enjoyed reading this novel. It was my first read by this author and I think if I'd read the Guardians novels maybe I'd have got more from it and understood better what they were capable of.

Stars: Three and a half, a good suspense and romance but both had too many niggles for me.

Love this story, Grant and Blair’s are awesome characters both individually and together, plenty of hot romance but also very good suspense. I loved seeing characters from AGS.
