Darkest Night was a little too dark (no pun intended) for me, and I ultimately ended up choosing to not finish it. I did like the characters (although, I wish his name wasn't Jock. lol), but the story went to a place I wasn't comfortable continuing with. As such, I will not be reviewing it publicly. Thank you so much for the opportunity!

Fast paced action with the right amount of twists and turns made this story bearable. But although I enjoyed the suspense elements of the story, I couldn't get behind the romance. I didn't like either character and even though the author made an effort to bring their connection and chemistry to the page it just wasn't enough for me to become invested in the romance.

All in all, an okay read.

***Note: Deciding not to review this book since I am no longer interested in reading a book by the author after her scandal with SH. I just need to get this book off my feedback list.***

I have thoroughly enjoyed many books by Megan Erickson. This series is fantastic. Unfortunately I am unable to post a review of this book on my blog at this time. I am excited to read more by Megan Erickson and this publishing imprint. Thank you so much for the opportunity.

Sizzling romantic suspense. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but the second book didn't hold my interest quite as well.

WHile I love Megan Erickson's writing these hacker books are just not doing it for me as I find the pace, plotting, and characters to be lacking connection for me.

I enjoyed this sexy, intense and action packed second story in the Wired and Dangerous series! All the characters introduced in the first in series are back, but this one focuses on Jock who has tasked himself with protecting an old friend of Wren's from a shady group of men dealing in human trafficking. Jock and Fiona have a lot of bad memories to overcome on their way to a happy ending but they manage it with their own strengths, and the help of their team. Plus they are able to take down the ring of bad guys in the process. It was great to see Fiona regain her sense of self as the story played out, and seeing Jock open up to the woman who captures his heart. I'm enjoying this series and look forward to more!

Content warning for Fiona's sexual assault history (mentioned briefly on page but not detailed too much in flashbacks).

I was super excited going into Darkest Night. I heard so many great things about the previous book and about Megan's writing style in general so when I was in a romantic suspense mood, this was one of the books I immediately reached for. Sadly, for the first couple chapters of the book I hit a solid brick wall. And we're not talking about the sexy solid brick wall of a hero's chest... I had a bit of a difficult time connecting with this book mainly because I had not read Zero Hour. Of course it's not necessary to read them in order, but I think it would have helped me get into the book faster. Once I had gotten past what was stopping me, it was full steam ahead and I ended up loving Darkest Night. It was a fantastic mix of truly jarring suspense and sexy romance between the lead characters. I loved how incredibly strong they both were, especially Fiona. That woman is fucking bad-ass. Overall, Darkest Night was a fabulous romantic suspense book. Once I got past the roadblock, I couldn't put it down.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

This was a good book but Fiona didn’t always come off well. Jock started off a little creepy and once you got to know him and see who he is you fall i love with him. Fiona just I don’t know seems a little meh at the beginning it isn’t really until the end that I truly began to rally behind her. What she did for those women was amazeballs and shows her strength. My problem with her was not that she wasn’t a strong amazing woman she was. It was more her attitude towards things in general. I understand she was hiding but she still didn’t have the attitude I would have liked for that situation. I think this was purposeful on the author’s behalf as well.We needed two main characters who were stark contrasts of one another and yet also two peas in a pod in others.

Jock has a past that defines him and yet doesn’t hold him back. He is ruthless and kind. Caring and singularly focused. His focus now is on protecting Fiona. What started as a job becomes more as does the danger to Fiona as the men from her past open up the stakes and gamble on women’s lives in a way that is truly revolting. You so hope that Jock and the crew can stop them and give them their just due. Those women deserve justice and closure.

Watching Jock fall in love is really intriguing. He doesn’t go into instalove but it develops as he learns more about her from afar. He gains a healthy respect for Fiona and her fight to survive and how she is surviving despite the odds stacked against her. When they meet it is not a lovey dovey meet cute. It is intense and we see how strong Fiona is. From there they learn about each other and also work together to stop the reign of fear in Fiona’s life.

It’s just I don’t know what about Fiona that rubs me wrong and I truly believe the author has created her this way on purpose. It doesn’t detract from the plot or romance it just makes it hard to get Fiona completely.

The story is suspenseful and full of danger and lures you in as you watch Jock and Fiona fall in love, Jock do everything he can to protect her while they all try to take down those hurting her and others and try to end the game. A game that the stakes are high and the reward higher.

This series just keeps on getting better and better! I am so pumped for the final book! Jock and Fiona were the perfect match. Romantic suspense is my jam and this series is one of my absolute favorites.

I liked this title more than the first book in the series, which I don't think I finished. I'm a sucker for guys keeping ladies safe, so I loved the beginning. It slowed down for me later and I had a hard time finishing.

This second installment of the Wired & Dangerous series missed the mark for me. The tension and suspense is there, but it's a little disjointed, and the large cast of characters is distracting. I had difficulty relating to both Fiona and Jock ... their romance seemed formulaic and a little rushed. I was happy for Fiona to have overcome such a tragic past and to find love, and I was happy for Jock to work through his own demons. The happy ending was satisfying, and the book overall was good.

I really enjoyed book one in this series that features a group of hackers/bad asses that want revenge. We learned in book one, that years ago women were kidnapped into an underground sex ring, and the heroine of book one was able to escape before she was abused. But the heroine in this book, Fiona, wasn’t rescued for days, and she was drugged and raped.

Now years later, the bad guys know Fiona is a loose end out there, and they want to shut her up permanently. Fiona has lived a life on the run and never leaving her ever-changing apartment. She knows they are after her, and she desperately tries to stay one step ahead of them.

Jamison aka Jock, has been assigned to keep Fiona safe. A bodyguard, he has been in the shadows making sure nothing bad happens to Fiona. But when he is literally in the shadows in an alley, and she spots him, and obviously freaks out, he has to come clean that her friends hired him to safeguard her and he truly isn’t there to harm her. Jock has fallen for Fiona, even though this is the first time he has made contact. He has a great, internal need to keep her safe, and refuses to let any of her guilt get in the way. Shortly after this, they are on the run and fall in love.

This one is a little too predictable for me. You have your standard, super-alpha guy who is devoted to keeping the heroine safe at all costs. The heroine is running from bad guys, pushes back at her vulnerable state and dark past. There is a lot of sex and then action and a HEA. I enjoyed Jock and Fiona – both very likable characters but this one didn’t hold the same intensity for me as book one. I think in book one, the supporting characters really stood out, where here it’s a lot of just Fiona and Jock. Lots of suspense and sex – *thumbs up* but also missing that spark that kept me enthralled in book one.

Grade: C+

A college student is kidnapped from her college campus and made a sex slave. It's not totally clear to me how she escaped and why she's on the run but she's clearly being hunted and can barely stay a step ahead of her hunters. Jock Bosh is he hunter or savior? An interesting if convoluted tale of a group of vigilantes who have their own baggage but have formed a bond of sorts to help each other out.

Fiona is whisked from her apartment in New York to meet with her friend whom she saved at the price of her own freedom who has now dispatched Josh to watch over Fiona and keep her safe. As the relationship between Josh and Fiona develops the intensity of the men hunting Fiona seems to intensify. It turns out that the sex traffickers are trying to reassemble a cast of characters that got away mixed in with new beauties. Thanks to Josh's patience Fiona is finally able to handle and move past the psychological damage that has prevented her from leading a full life. Does she have the courage to go back undercover and help capture the men responsible and put this evil to bed once and for all?
Fiona is a character that I got emotionally invested in especially when with a desperate courage she gives the tracker that would bring her help tp girls she feels need help more desperately than her. Will Josh and her friends who have promised to keep her safe find her in time? I enjoy a nice thrill ride with twists and turns. While this story certainly has many elements of suspense and surprise it is not an adrenaline fueled hair rising ride. It does have a wonderful cast of very colorful characters that I expect to see more of as the story line develops and the series progresses.

M/F Thriller Romance
Triggers: Rape, Human Trafficking, Murder

Jock is very good at his job. He's good at it because he can detach himself, and he has no personal attachments himself. When he takes on the job of protecting Fiona, he doesn't expect to feel so protective or attracted to her. It makes his job more difficult because he can't decide if a relationship with him is a good or bad idea. He knows that he's damaged, but he can't help but want more with Fiona.

Fiona has been on the run since she escaped a human trafficking ring. She knew they would find her – they kept finding her and forcing her to move on. When she finally is able to confront some of her past, she will gain her friend back and a whole force of protection. She is wary of Jock at first, but once she sees him and what is underneath his stern exterior, she can't help but fall for him.

This is a fast-paced story with a lot going on. There are characters who make second appearances, so I suggest that you read the previous book. I really enjoyed the way that Fiona is able to come out of her shell – she is a well-developed character and you get to see her flaws and insecurities. The growth that happens for both characters is well played out and I thought that it was a great story. I can't wait to see who gets the next book.

I enjoyed this next installment in the series. Although Jock did piss me off soooo much. >.> He was so shouty at Fiona, at times, like bro relax. You know what she went through and he was just plain wrong for acting like all would and should be fine once they took down the men who raped her. Like, yes I know he apologized after but damn how you gonna tell someone who was sexually assaulted that they'd basically get over it??? I don't care how upset *he* was in the moment, Fiona didnt deserve that.

So while Jock did kinda annoy me i adored Fiona. so much. I loved that she called Jock TF out for some of the crap he said. Take him to task yessss. And we get the rest of the gang called in when Fiona and Jock had to flee cuz she'd been found again.

I have to say the plot felt a bit similar to book one's where fiona offers herself up as bait to save the other women. and the team comes to the rescue but it was enjoyable enough. The characters really made the book for me.

Marisol is still bae. and Dade fracking Kelly is still making dramatic entrances. I love that guy. So mysterious. I hope we learn more about him. I'm also intrigued by Tarr, who helps Jock clean up after the guy comes for Fiona annnnd comes through for him at the end there. I suspect he and Erick may get tangled up in book 3 ;)

3.5 stars--DARKEST NIGHT is the second instalment in Megan Erickson’s contemporary, adult WIRED AND DANGEROUS romantic suspense series focusing on a group of computer hackers and coders. This is thirty-eight year old, former US soldier and bodyguard Jamison ‘Jock’ Bosh, and thirty-year old Fiona Madden’s story line DARKEST NIGHT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Jock and Fiona) DARKEST NIGHT follows the building relationship between thirty-eight year old, former US soldier and bodyguard Jamison ‘Jock’ Bosh, and thirty-year old Fiona Madden. More than ten years earlier Fiona Madden survived a horrific ordeal- kidnapped, abused and tortured as a sex slave for a human trafficking ring. On the run trying to stay one step ahead of the men who destroyed her life, Fiona will soon discover that what little semblance of peace she had managed to obtain is about to be destroyed once again. Enter bodyguard Jamison ‘Jock’ Bosh, the man with whom Fiona will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Fiona and Jock, and the potential fall-out as Fiona continues to be targeted by the men from her past.

Jamison ‘Jock’ Bosh volunteered to covertly watch over and protect Fiona Madden, a woman unaware of how close the threats to her life had come full circle. Undercover and alone Jock would soon come face to face with his future when his ‘hiding’ spot is revealed to an all-too alert Fiona Madden. Fiona knows her time may be limited especially with the all too familiar images and photos that constantly appear in the mail whenever she moves. Meeting Jamison ‘Jock’ Bosh finds our heroine thinking about a possible future with the remote, quiet and brooding man, a man whose own demons continues to ride hard.

The relationship between Jock and Fiona begins as a working assignment when Jock volunteers to protect the woman with whom he will fall in love. Fiona is one-time best friends with computer hacker Wren Lee, Roarke Brennan’s girlfriend (Zero Hour #1) but friends that have not seen one another in over ten years. As a favour to Roarke and Wren, Jock offers up his services to protect the young woman that will call to his heart. The $ex scenes are passionate and intimate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters including Roarke and Wren, Marisol Rosa, Erick Lee, and the mysterious Tarr, a man who will do anything for Jock including placing himself in the line of fire.

DARKEST NIGHT is a story friendship and family; mystery and suspense; romance and love. The premise is exciting; the romance is sensual; the characters are dynamic and spirited but I wish the author revealed some of the background history and friendship between Wren and Fiona, as well as the trauma surrounding the kidnapping and violation of our story line heroine; the ‘hacking’ and computer elements of which Roarke’s team specializes are limited such that the reader is told what happened not shown the process of the how or why.

Wired & Dangerous #2, I love intelligence and I'm a sucker for military men in Romance and Jock is both of those. Jamison "Jock" Bosh is retired Army turned mercenary/hitman turned freelance hacker and he joined forces with this crew to find out who killed his friend's brother. Jock knows that pain and was willing to help and in the process they discovered something for more sinister at work. Jock volunteered to watch over Fiona and help protector incase something happened. From the moment Jock saw her picture he was a goner. Fiona's life changed drastically in college she was taken and sold used and abused and then released and for the past ten years she's been looking over her shoulder taking self defence classes and even learning how to fire a gun because in those ten years the people who took her never let her forget what they did to her or that they couldn't easily take her again. But now that Jock is there that isn't going to happen.

What happened in Jock's past made him hard, and to others he may seem emotionless but ever since Fiona Jock has once again opened his heart to another and he'll be damned if he lets anything happen to her. Fiona has been on the mend she has accepted her past but hasn't quite gotten to the point where she can move on with her life and now with the threat to her life and with Jock protecting her she finally realizes what she needs to do to move on and be able to fully recover and let herself love Jock like they both deserve but the journey to that is rocky and scary but Fiona knows what she has to do.

Overall, I loved it. I did feel a connection between Jock and Fiona they were both damaged but gave each other hope that they could have and do deserve happiness. The action was intense and a little predictable, you knew where the story was headed but it was still quite the ride. The dog Sundance stole the show I want one just like him. I hope we do get Erick's story maybe with Tarr I would read that M/M but I am also hoping we get Marisol or Dade next.

I'm a fan of romances in which the power dynamic is basically level from the very start. This book 100% fit that bill and it gave me all the feels. Despite initial appearances, Jock and Fiona are matched in every way. Jock may be a complete alpha and Fiona's ultimate protector but she, in turn, has the power to level him with just a glance. The sense of balance between Jock and Fiona in this book allows these two to open up intimately and emotionally with one another in a way that I just did not think was possible given the premise. That balance also paves the way for them to excel personally. These two kick some serious ass.

In this second book in the Wired & Dangerous series, Fiona has been on the run for the last ten years, and Jock has been tapped to watch over her from a distance. Of course that distance closes over the course of the book until these two have some real feelings for each other.

I did appreciate the suspense in this book as Jock and Fiona navigate their situation. I didn't find there were any big surprises here, but Jock and Fiona do have some heat between them which makes for a nice romantic suspense story.

I do love the premise of this series, the hacker part of it all, but I also expected more tech references. As someone who spends most of her life in tech, this reader just didn't get the hacker vibe from this book. I think that's where this series falls short for me -- in an effort to make the story non-technical, it misses the mark as a hacker story. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

Overall, an okay story. I will be reading the third installment in the series when it comes out in the fall.
