Highland Betrayal by Alyson McLayne

Maggie is strong and fierce and doesn't need a man to protect her, which is a character I can root for! I love strong heroines in historical romance. Callum is a DREAMBOAT. Oh my gosh, he might be one of my favorite heroes ever. The romance was great, but I honestly wish the mystery subplot had been removed altogether. It was very interesting to me in the beginning, and then it just fizzled and was hardly talked about again. The book totally shifted its focus to another subplot and this one was barely resolved, and in a nice little bow. It felt like the author forgot what was happening in the first half and quickly resolved it to meet a deadline. It was disappointing, as I really love mysteries in my romance novels. BUT CALLUM. I love him so much that he saved the entire book for me. Can I have him?

The best thing about this book was Callum.
Whatever the mystery was wasn't super well done, resolved too quickly, and almost unresolved.

Laird Callum MacLean vowed to marry Maggie MacDonnell. But when his father's supposed suicide makes him Laird of a clan, he's too busy unmasking his father's killer to bring her into his dangerous new home. Maggie's home isn't any safer, so she does what any resourceful Highland lass would do. She escapes—and finds herself toe-to-toe with Callum, who's determined to fulfill his promise. Maggie can't bring herself to trust him with her heart again. But with a traitor still at large, they must rely on each other in every way, or their clans—and their love—will be destroyed.
This is the first time I’d read this author so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I wasn’t disappointed. I really enjoyed this adventure. I loved both Maggie and Callum as well as their journey throughout the story. I can’t wait to read more from this author. I highly recommend.

I am so sorry. My grandma suddenly had stage 4 cancer and I picked up my family to go take care of here. I am no longer able to access this title on my kindle and, while it was read, I don't remember it well enough to leave an accurate review. Again, I am so very sorry and hope you will allow me to review future titles - I just needed to make the last months with my grandma the center of my attention.

Horrible, unrealistic and boring.
I really had to torture myself to go through with this book but gave up at 70%

It has been a while since I read a historical romance that I enjoyed this much. This book is  certainly a get ready for a bumpy ride book.  Maggie MacDonnell is done waiting on men. Waiting for Callum Laclean to marry her, her brother to sober up , and the other brother to return. She is going to go find her brother John and together they put their home in order. As for that marriage promise Callum gave her four years ago only to not come back for her? Well he can just shove it! After all she needs to take care of things before her horrible cousin Irvin forces her to marry him.

Callum loves Maggie and finding out their marriage plans have been broken he sees the mistake he made. Oh, he had good reasons for making her wait the way he did. When he finds out what is going on at Maggie's home he and his brother tell her they will help. Maggie is a common sense kind of girl and agrees to their help. Of course when she is betrayed by Callum again she is so done!

This book is great that it left me breathless. Maggie doesn't need anyone to save her. She can do that all by herself but I love that Callum felt he needed to be the one to save her. Even if things don't always go according to plan.

This is the third book in the Sons of Gregor Macleod series. I really enjoyed this book, But then again any book with hot Scottish men in Kilts is…sexy. Callum and Maggie were destined to be together but the time just wasn’t right at first so we try again. This time fate stepped in and took over. Maggie wasn’t going for it because she was hurt the first time. Once the circumstances came out and well it is really hard to ignore chemistry and attraction when it is strong.

Maggie’s brother is the Laird of their clan. He is dying and she finds out that she is to be married of to a cousin in order for him to gain control of the lands and the clan. He feels that he deserves this he is even willing to go as far as raping Maggie (also, letting his men rape her)in hopes of her becoming pregnant. This would then help in proving that the lands will be his. Maggie proves to be a strong character she won’t let this happen so she works on a plan to escape.

Callum and his men stop in one night. They end up standing up for Maggie, They learn of plan to take over lands and clan. They will not let this happen. Callum is in for a surprise as he tries to help Maggie. She is stronger than he remembered which only makes things difficult for these two headstrong highlanders. It was interesting as I watched these two fought side by side. My money was on Maggie.

Characters were written strong and easy to connect to. You think that you know a strong woman until you read about one that lives in the highlands. They endure a lot. Ms. McLayne gives us more than just strength. She gives us tender steamy love scenes that are fun and emotional. The whole story is fun and full of emotion.

I enjoyed the banter back and forth between Callum and Maggie it made things seem more realistic. The adventure as these two worked together to save Maggie’s lands and clan was very fun and entertaining. Although I enjoyed this story and it was able to be read as a standalone story I am going to go back and read the first two in this series as I have fallen in love with Callum and Maggie.

The descriptions of the highlands was vivid and as always made me want to pack my bags and head out for a journey on my own…if only I could find a highlander like Callum.

This was a wonderful read, easy to follow with strong characters and secrets to unravel along with spies, traders and enemies around every corner. Never a dull moment…

You won’t want to put this down so settle in…

Who doesn't love a good highland romance, I know I live the sleepy Scottish romances and this novel is no exception. Alyson McLayne had me eagerly turning the pages of this novel to see what was going to happen next. From the get go I was enchanted and falling hard and fast for the leading man and by the end I was about as drunk on love as the heroine. The book was plotted and written wonderfully and I am eagerly looking foreword to reading more from this author.

I love this series. This series alone has turned me into a fan of Scottish romance. The men in the series are all brothers from different lands but they grew up together and consider themselves brothers. They would do anything for each other. And this time the story belongs to Callum.

Callum was not only betrothed but in love with Maggie. But he thinks he has to take care of family business before he can have Maggie has his own, that is until she is in trouble. Now Callum and his brothers are off to save Maggie. But Maggie is a strong woman who is independent and resourceful. And she knows she doesn’t need saving but she may need a little help out of her situation.

This is the third in the series and can really be read as a stand alone but I wouldn’t suggest it. You really should read them in order so you understand the connection of the “brothers”.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The story started off too fast, there was not enough build up and I had to go back to the previous novels to remember the premise and get character background, which definitely made this not feel like a stand alone. Once that awkward beginning was moved past, I found this to be an enjoyable, if not predictable, romance.

Now that I’ve read the third story in The Sons of Gregor MacLeod series, I have to admit that this third one is my favorite and that’s because I really loved the hero and heroine. These two were perfect for each other and their happily ever after was well deserved.

I loved the strength of character both displayed, their loyalty to their clans and their chemistry with each other was just beautiful.

This was a series I grew to like and will be glad to recommend to all my bookworms that are looking for an easy escape to the Highlands. Let this author take you there!

I loved this book. Or should I say, I LOVED Callum. I cannae tell you how much I loved Callum. Hands-down, one of my favourite heroes this year! He just ticked all my boxes for what a romantic hero should be--compassionate, determined, loyal, strong, sexy, heroic, without being overbearing.

Maggie MacDonell has been engaged to Callum MacLean since childhood and she’s grown tired of waiting for him to keep his promises to her. Her brother is deathly ill, her evil cousin Irvin has taken over their keep while he’s conniving to take over as Laird of their Clan and his plans include using Maggie to achieve his goals. Laird Callum MacLean vowed to marry Maggie MacDonnell, but first he needs to make sure she would be safe at his castle. His father was murdered and once he finds the murderer he’ll go and fetch Maggie. Maggie literally falls into his hands and he no choice but to protect her, his clan and convince Maggie he still wants their betrothal and marriage. I love the witty banter between Maggie and Callum, and the way his brothers or “Gregor’s boys”come together to help each other in times of trouble and help each other out. A captivating story filled with adventure, intrigue, mystery and a sizzling romance. This is my honest review after I voluntarily read a copy of this book.

This is book 3in the sons of McGregor series. Callum and Maggie's story. We've heard Callum speak of Maggie, his betrothed, in the previous books. He was very confident that Maggie would wait for him, as long as it took to find his father's murderer. Of course he nevert communicated that to Maggie.
So this story starts out with Maggie ending her betrothal for the protection of Callum because there is trouble in her clan.
When callum received the letter ending the betrothal, he realizes he's let Maggie wait too long. He decides to investigate and runs right into Maggie, on her own escaping her clan.
The two have enemies. They are both being betrayed by someone in their clan. They both want to protect the other.
It makes for an interesting story and alot of adventure. I loved Callum and Maggie's story. I can't wait for Gavin's story.

Callum has vowed to marry Maggie but when is father dies and he becomes Laird of his clan he knows he must find his father’s killer. Maggie is tired of waiting and escapes her home before she is married off to another. Will they find a way to be together? This is a fast-paced historical read with plenty of drama and the characters are fun and entertaining and the story is action-packed. I was hooked from beginning to end.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

While this is book 3 in a series, you can read it as a stand alone. I have not read any of the previous books and was able to follow along easily. The traitor is revealed so the mystery of Callum's father is solved but the story of who is behind this plot - the mastermind is still unresolved and will probably continue in the next books.

Maggie is such a great warrior woman that is strong, brave, and compassionate. She plans in advance and feels with her heart. When Callum doesn't keep his promise to come back and marry her, she resolves to solve her own problem. She is no maiden that needs a man to rescue her!! And wow - a female spy who listens in and takes notes of those meetings - like a lady James Bond.

While Callum thought he was doing the best thing for Maggie by leaving her with her clan while he tried to solve his clan's problems, he was wrong. It was great that Maggie really made him work to "woo" her and while she knew he was sorry, sorry just didn't cut it!!

There was non-stop drama and action and while one traitor was obvious, there was another betrayal that was a huge surprise. Lots of history that comes out and ties up the motives for these actions. Yet, we still don't know who is pulling the strings behind the scenes, Maggies's notes were never dealt with in depth and I hope that they come into play in a later book.

Wish that the other sons' women would have made an appearance with Maggie as we read so much about them in this story that I wanted to see them meet! It makes me what to read about the rest of the sons as they meet their women - so can't wait for the next book!!

This is another amazing installment in this steamy highland romance series. The first two books in the series were incredible and this one was just as good.

Callum and Maggie's story was beautiful, and I found myself unable to put it down until I finished it. The drama, romance, the amazing sense of family, and on top of all of that the scottish setting. I have found a new favorite series through Alyson McLayne and I would read anything she writes. She has become an auto buy author for me.

The Sons of Gregor MacLeod #3, I'm glad we didn't have to wait long for Maggie and Callum's book, this can be read as a stand alone Callum was in the previous book and only mentioned Maggie was his betrothed and what kind of woman she was and that has no impact on this story but it sure was a nice tease for the story. Maggie and Callum have been betrothed since childhood but when they met again as teenagers Callum knew he would love Maggie forever. The untimely death of Callum's father kept him from going back to claim Maggie as his wife and with the unrest going on he figured she would be safer with her family then with him. Three years later he's no closer to finding his father killer and now he receives word that the betrothal between him and Maggie has been broken, but something seems wrong with the letter and they decide a detour to MacDonnell land is warranted.

Maggie MacDonnell can take care of herself, being the only girl and raised by her father and two older brothers she can shot an arrow and throw a knife better than any man. Her home is in turmoil, John is nowhere to be found and Ross is drinking himself to death after the deaths of his wife and child and now her cousin is trying to take over the lands and instal himself as laird. Maggie is no damsel in distress she can save herself after months of preparing and weeks spying on Irvin trying to find out his exact plans she finally makes her move and escapes if only she hadn't of run across that pack of wolves she would have made it to Edinburgh, lucky Callum and his men ran across her soon after. Things don't get any easier now that Maggie has Callum and his family to help they still have to escape MacDonnell land and when they do make it back to Callum home they still have to find the spy before anyone else dies.

Callum is relentless when it comes to Maggie, he's not going to give her up easily. Maggie has had so much loss in her life she's worried about letting Callum back in afraid he'll leave her and not come back again. Callum's love is steadfast throughout the book and Maggie it's not like she needs all that much convincing she's just scared she makes it harder than it needs to be. I love that Callum respects and loves her all the more for her strength, that's always been there he was always bragging about her talent throwing knives. They are great characters and a fantastic plot, very exciting at parts, with a heartfelt romance. Alyson McLayne has a great style and narrative description. Overall, this was a really good read.
