I love, love, love Alyson McLayne's highland novels. Our heroine, Maggie, is no weak miss, she is probably the most skilled archer in the Highlands. Betrothed to Callum, she has waited for over three years for him to make her his bride - well she is now done waiting. Her brother, the laird, is ill, her other brother is off fighting and her cousin is trying to take over the clan. She decides to hunt her brother down and beg him to return, oh and break her betrothal with Callum.
Callum's father died under mysterious circumstances and he is worried about bringing Maggie to his home. What if he can't protect her? He couldn't protect his father from an untimely death and believes there is someone in his clan who will betray them all. Callum is upset when he realizes Maggie wants to end their betrothal and vows that he will change her mind.
The chemistry between Callum and Maggie sizzles. There is some passionate scenes, but the lead up is a slow burn.
If Maggie is a bit unusual in romance novels, the same can be said for Callum, he isn't a rake and has sworn off women since pledging himself to Maggie. Our heroine is bound and determined to do what is best for her clan and tries her best to save her family from their downfall as well.
I can't wait to finish the series about these highland foster brothers who would die for each other, and of course the women who love them. Highly recommended!

Highland Betrayal by Alyson McLayne is one exciting Highland adventure. From one danger to another, Alyson McLayane kept me intrigued. Danger hung onto every page. Enemies seemed to appear from everywhere. Spies are in ever clan making the intensity of the deadly situation for the heroine and hero that much more interesting. I loved how the lead female protagonist was just as strong if not stronger than the male protagonist. It brought a lot of humor to the dark journey.
Inside this tale, I found a young Highland woman left by her fiance to stay at her home. It was supposed to be safer for her there. Callum had every intention of returning as soon as possible for her. But his father's death kept him away. Maggie thought her fiance broke his promise to come back for her. Now, her clan is full of traitors and enemies. The leading enemy being her cousin. He wants to take the Laird title from her dying brother and then force her into marrying him. Then, he planned to rape her to get her pregnant and if he couldn't do the job, he'd let his men take turns. Talk about betrayal...
Maggie came up with a plan. One that involved her leaving behind her home and running to find her other brother. She never intended to tun into her old flame...
Callum still loves Maggie and when he found out she's in danger, he won't let her go. He has a plan to take her to his home and keep her safe. Even marrying her...but was he too late?
A love that never died out...
Mistrust on both sides...
And enemies wanting them both dead...
Can they survive?

A very sweet, cute highland romance with some great banter and hot love scenes. I'd love to read the first few books of the series.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for my ARC. All opinions are my own.

Highland Betrayal, is a wonderful historical romance novel. Being a Scottish one makes it even better. Maggie is very fierce, I want to be just like her when I grow up.

Highland Betrayal, by Alyson McLayne is an entertaining historical romance with a mix of danger and suspense, as well as humor and passion.
It's been years since Maggie MacDonnell has seen or heard from her betrothed. Her family's clan is in danger with one overly drunk brother, another missing brother, and someone else trying to claim their lands...and her! Since Maggie's completely alone, she decides to run away from home and try to find her absent brother. On her way, Maggie encounters various dangers and her betrothed.
Laird Callum MacLean absolutely loves and wants to marry Maggie, yet circumstances surrounding his father's death and other issues prevented him from returning. For years, Callum believed that Maggie was safer in her home rather than with his clan. When Maggie and Callum reunite, there's plenty of miscommunication and drama, yet they unwavering love is evident (even when they don't properly express it to each other). So far, the three books in this series are highly captivating.
Since it's the third book in The Sons of Gregor MacLeod series, it's ideal to start with the first book to meet the rest of the foster brothers and other characters. However, each book is a standalone, so it's not necessary to read the books in order.
Highland Betrayal is recommended and geared towards those who enjoy reading historical romances, particularly stories involving highlanders.
Note: I received this book from NetGalley, which is a program designed for bloggers to write book reviews in exchange for books, yet the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Maggie MacDonell has been engaged to Callum MacLean since childhood. unfortunately, he hasn't come to claim her now that she's a grown woman. That's a big problem because her brother who's laird, is a drunk and evil cousin Irvin has taken over their keep while he's incapacitated. Irvin also wants to get Maggie pregnant and marry her himself. Maggie escapes the keep and meets Callum who's finally coming to get her. Callum now has to convince Maggie that he's the right man for her. Maggie is a woman who's good with knives and archery and seems capable of taking care of herself without Callum's help. I wish there had been more background and development of her as a character. How did she get so good with weapons? It was not something likely for a woman of her place and time. There's also not much development of the relationship between her and Callum. It all happened years ago and now it's just a matter of Maggie forgiving him and deciding she wants to get married. Callum has his reasons for not claiming Maggie earlier but that story's not developed either beyond a line or two. You get the feeling there's a story leading up to all this that's been missed. All that's left is the final wrap up. It's a decent romance and the sex scenes are hot enough, I just wish there was more story and depth..

A really great book .
It’s funny and tense and emotional, and tragic but lighthearted all at the same time, what you’d probably call the perfect mix .
I’ve not laughed at a Highland book quite so much in a while , but Maggie is a great character to read, and her relationship with Callum is addictive and just so right , they are like and old bickering couple from the start .
This is a wonderful read and I recommend it to all highland fans .
I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review

There is chemistry and banter between Maggie and Callum. Betrothed as children, the two come together when Maggie is trying to escape an evil cousin at her own castle. The why's are a bit convoluted as is the mystery of the death of Callum' s father. The love scenes are steamy and fun. Overall, a satisfying read.
