Confronting intruders with a revolver is not something most young ladies of the “ton” would be expected to do. But in When a Lady Desires a Wicked Lord by Tara Kingston, Alexandra Quinn does just that. Unfortunately, the small revolver is no match for the man’s body armor.

A noted Egyptologist, Alex is targeted because of a map supposedly send to her by a professor friend who has recently died. This map supposedly directs the holder to the tomb of an Egyptian King untouched by grave robbers. If true, the tomb could be invaluable both in terms of historic significance and financial value.

Benedict Weston, Lord Marlsbrook, arrives just in time to assist Alex with the intruder. Advised of the man’s intent to break into Alex’s home, Benedict arrives just in time to stop the man.

Years ago it seemed the two were destined for each other. But Benedict’s need to bring his family’s estate out of debt interfered. He began selling the antiquities which Alex was dedicated to preserving in museums, creating an insurmountable divide.

The two are brought together again trying to find this mysterious map. They also want to get to the bottom of the untimely deaths of a number of colleagues. Only Alex’s expertise can decipher the coded message they received from one of the victims.

Exciting And Intriguing

It is always particularly fun to read a book with such an excellent storyline. I liked the intrigue of the mystery, and the characters involved.

It’s especially nice to read a book where the female is the scholar. I like the good strong female character.

This is the fourth book in the Her Majesty’s Most Secret Service series, although with those work very well as a standalone novel.

the latest her majesty's most secret service novel, when a lady desires a wicked lord, turns its focus on egyptology. alexandra quinn is renowned for her skill in decoding hieroglyphs. the last thing she expects is for the work to turn dangerous when word gets out that she is in possession of a map that will lead to a cavern filled with egyptian treasure.

when her ex-love, fellow egyptologist benedict weston, viscount marlsbrook, saves her from a ruffian's attack. he explains their mentor has been killed and that alex holds both the object he ws killed for, and the ability to decode the clues left behind in one of the murders. but alex isn't willing to trust benedict so easily. they parted ways years ago when he decided that money was a more powerful motivator than love.

he has his reasons, and it never feels like he explains them properly to her, but in the end, all's well that ends well. finding himself in alex's presence again and realizing that he loves her as much as ever, has him wondering if he made the right choice all those years ago.

this is a second chance at love story at its heart, and benedict does a good job of making sure he is worthy of alex's ability to forgive.

Set in the 1890s, this romance is set around the era’s fascination with all things Egyptian. The heroine, Alexandra, is a scholar of Egyptology, and the hero, Benedict, is a… tomb raider. The two have a Past, and are brought back together when Alexandra’s mentor sends Benedict back to England to protect her just before he is murdered.

Sadly, that was the most exciting thing about the novel. Benedict doesn’t do any tomb raiding (apart from seducing Alexandra and abandoning her for a second time). Alexandra doesn’t get to use her knowledge. They don’t even use the treasure map her mentor lent them. Almost the entire book occurs within the confines of Alexandra’s London townhouse, when the early part of the book seemed to be setting it up for a magnificent quest for a lost tomb in Egypt.

I kind of bought into the romance between Alex and Benedict, but then again, I kind of didn’t. If he’d actually cared about her and respected her opinion (and her formidable intelligence!), Benedict would have told her the truth about the money issues with his estate long before. Instead he has the gall to get huffy when she expects him to behave as he’s always done, when he’s literally given her no cause to trust him whatsoever.

Alex was, frankly, far too good for him. Beautiful, smart and well-off, I don’t quite understand why she didn’t have besotted Egyptologists falling at her feet anyway. This is the 1890s, where educated women were becoming much more valued, especially in the upper echelons of society where Alex moved. Instead she seemed to be one of those heroines who sits around in limbo until the hero comes back into her life, which didn’t suit her strong, independent personality at all.

I think the author was aiming for an Evie and Rick (from The Mummy, of course) vibe, and it just didn’t quite come off. The action was flat, the promised treasure-hunt never eventuated and I didn’t think Benedict deserved Alex in the end. It’s not badly-written, but it really didn’t hit the spot for me, I’m afraid. Three stars.

When a Lady Desires a Wicked Lord keeps you turning the pages on this second chance at love adventure. Benedict broke Alexandra’s heart years earlier by leaving her and by not protecting those items she held dear in her Egyptian studies. Yet, when it appears it may be too late for them, he protects her above all else.

Alex’s sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and Matthew Colton (When a Lady Deceives) return as part of this book. I love with writers bring in previous characters to continue their story, too. The Colton Agency is trying to protect Alex, too, and sometimes protect her from Benedict.

There is a trust issue between Alex and Benedict that still affects their relationship. She believes the archaeological finds should be in museums. He sells them for profit. Benedict inherited a poor estate. In his desire to rebuild the family’s funds and to protect his mother, he believes he has to sell items to reach his goal. Alex does not need a fortune, she just needs Benedict.

There are some serious struggles along the way toward finding out who killed their mentor and his friends. Someone is trying to get the map their mentor is believed to have sent Alex, but she does not know anything about a map. All of this adds to the intrigue of the book as we watch Alex and Benedict try to rebuild their relationship.

When a Lady Desires a Wicked Lord by Tara Kingston is book Three in the Her Majesty's Most Secret Service series. This is the story of Benedict Weston, Viscount Marlsbrook and Alexandra Quinn. I have read the previous books but feel this can easily be a standalone book.

Loved this book!

Well all I can say is that I’m NEVER disappointed in Tara Kingston’s writing! She captivated my attention from the first words on the page!

I loved Alexandra Quinn she’s not only beautiful she’s smart and in my opinion for a woman in that time fearless!
Intrigue and murder set the pace for Alexandra to team up with the only man that she’s ever loved but unfortunately broke her heart.....Benedict Weston. Can she trust him to help her escape a villain that’s out to get her or will crush her once again?

Benedict has always loved Alexandra but circumstances tore them apart. Knowing that she’s in danger he will do anything in his power to keep her safe, but the lady prooves to be a chalenge she doesn’t trust him. His love for has always been strong but there are some things that he can’t really be open about. Sometimes to love wholly one has to trust! I won’t give away the story but it’s really good to see them get their second chance. Full of mystery intrigue and action a must read for all historical romance fans this is a keeper.

I recieved a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

Ten years after he broke her heart Egyptologist Alexandra Quinn is saved from an intruder by Lord Benedict Marlsbrook. But it is a map that he has come for, but together with the Colton Agency they must stop a cunning murderer.
An enjoyable mystery story set in the Victorian era with likeable characters

What an excellent read this was! Alexandra Quinn was such an intelligent and brave lady. Benedict Weston, Viscount Marlsbrook loves Alexandra but feels unworthy. There follows an intriguing story of trying to identify the person behind the menace. I loved the ironic quips of Roderick, Marlsbrook’s butler. This story has romance, danger, mystery, spies and the advantage of a loving family. I was given a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A second chance in love/life is one of my favourite tropes and murder mystery to boot!

Egyptologist Alexandra Quinn was shaken by her near-death experience but was more shocked when she came face-to-face with her rescuer, the same man who bruised her young heart a decade ago.

Benedict Weston, Viscount Marlsbrook, turned his back to the only woman he ever loved. He was left with an estate with insurmountable debt and there's only one way he could put it to rights, a quest which opposes Alexandra's own. For years, he’s pillaged antiquities in his desire to restore their family’s estate.

A murderer is in close pursuit, looking for a treasure map, Benedict has vowed to protect Alex, whether she likes it or not.

They are compelled by grievous circumstance to work together, to uncover a crime most heinous. The killer has left a bloody trail from Cairo to London and Alex is the next target.

Alex doesn't trust Benedict, and makes an effort to distance herself from him, but her traitorous heart and her body succumb to the rake's charm.

Tara Kingston has done this story justice, the murder and intrigue element in this story was so well-written. Alex and Benedict are passionate, clever, and interesting characters.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader's copy from the publisher through NetGalley. My opinions are impartial, honest and all mine.

This is such an interesting historical novel with touch of mystery and intrigue. I really enjoyed it. The story is about a mystical map that leads to hidden treasure. Someone is willing to kill a lot of people to get to that map and they won't stop until they find it. Consequently Miss Quinn is in grave danger, everyone thinks she has the map. She has no idea if she do indeed possess such a map or not but she must solve this riddle not only to save herself but also to find the killer. She is willing to work with Benedict to find out who murdered the Professor. Benedict is not someone she trusts completely, however, she knows that he would never knowingly hurt her.
Benedict is in London to protect Alex and to find the map. He has his own motives to unravel this mystery but one thing is for sure; he still cares for Alex and would do anything to protect her. Even if it meant putting himself in harm's way. They were once close friends and lovers, they can be again. Only if Alex forgives him and he is willing to open up to her. There are things about him that he doesn't want her to know. He wants her to trust her though. It's a very difficult situation for both of them. Whether they get their second chance or ruin everything good between them is yet to be seen...
It's well-written and all the characters are really great. I found this book quite entertaining and would recommend to all historical fiction fans. It was well worth the read.

Let me begin by saying that I definitely think this book will appeal to fans of historical romance novels, and especially those who have read the other books in this series (you do not have to have done so in order to enjoy this one however). I enjoy this author's writing style and the way she is able to blend in romance with mystery and just a bit of danger. In that aspect, this book was very pleasing.

However, this story didn't seem to have the same attention grabbing flow that her other novels had. Instead of being glued to my kindle desperate for more, I found it easy to put it down and go do all the adult things I should have been doing in the first place. The plot was good, the characters were interesting (and it was nice seeing characters from the other two stories pop in as well), but there was just something missing with this one that made it more tedious than exciting.

I will say this story did have its moments, and on the whole I am positive I will most likely be in the minority with my thoughts and opinions on this one.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Brilliant Egyptologist Alexandra Quinn is stunned when the man who’d shattered her young heart rescues her from an intruder at her home. Forced to work with the rakish Lord, they must identify a cunning murderer who’s left a blood-drenched trail from Cairo to London. Alex knows better than to trust Benedict, but the wicked promise in his kiss tempts her.
Benedict Weston, Viscount Marlsbrook, never wanted to be a hero. For years, he’s plundered antiquities in his quest to restore his family’s debt-ridden estate. Now, a killer has targeted the only woman he’s ever loved—the woman he craves with a soul-deep hunger. He’ll do whatever it takes to protect Alex—even from himself.
This is the third book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own, the first two books only add to the enjoyment of this page turning book. As well as romance there’s a mystery that needs to be solved & a murderer to find. Alex is independent, strong willed & intelligent but she’s also loved Benedict for years. Benedict had a difficult childhood & is determined his almost bankrupt viscountcy will prosper. The book grabbed me from the first page when Alex was attacked in her own home, that set the pace for the book which flowed right until the end. The characters are very well fleshed & I love Alex & Benedict, although I wanted to shake him at times however I forgave him all when he gave Alex the statue. Another engrossing page turner from the author.

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

‘When a Lady desires a wicked Lord’ commences, the pace begins and doesn’t let up until the end. Alexandra Quinn fights off an intruder who gains the upper hand, but is fortunately saved by Viscount Marlsbrook, Benedict Weston, who broke off from Alex due to his family finances.
Whilst this was a second chance at love, the mystery behind the murders, adds to this story. Alex and Benedict battle their feelings with Alex not wanting to be hurt again whilst Benedict, wishes he could have changed his earlier actions.
This was an entertaining read, with great characters and plenty of action.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

My Thoughts:

This particular book from this series and not the series in it's entirety gives mind to one of the early books I read by Amanda Quick (Jane Anne Krentz). In both we have someone who deals with antiquities. Both have a mysterious nature and make you want to continue reading to find out what happens next.
This book is also a second chance at love story.
Alexandra and Benedict had a mutual past. When a killer threatens Alex he feels it his duty to step in and protect the only woman he ever loved.
Will the killer win out or will this renewed relationship win in the end?
I gave this newest book in Her Majesty’s Most Secret Service series a 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.25 of 5.0 flames.
There is no need to have read any other books from this series or to have read them in any particular order as they all can be read as standalone titles.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the publisher and NetGalley via invitation. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I have read and reviewed voluntarily.

I voluntarily read a copy of this book through Netgalley. The book involved the murder of several individuals that were made to appear as if they were natural or suicidal in cause. The book involved the search for hidden Egyptian tombs that contained artifacts that were extremely valuable. Two people who once were in love seen to be in great danger from an unknown individual or individuals. Alexandra and Benedict had once been lovers but because of his greed had parted ways and remained apart for several years. They come back together when a mentor of their was killed and their lived endangered. It is a good read and has a HEA.

I really enjoyed Alex and Benedict's story! It was a reunion story, which is always one of my favorites.

Benedict had broken Alex's heart years ago, but when they must work together to find a killer, Alex heart can't seem to remember all the heartache it went through all those years ago. Even though she is weary of her renewed feelings for Benedict, Alex can't seem to stop thinking about him. Can she protect her heart this time?

It was very enjoyable watching these two work through their present and past issues to finally find their HEA! I've really enjoyed this series and hope that Kingston has plans to continue it.

Benedict could be honest, “jealousy is a shallow, transient emotion. What I am experiencing is far more complicated than that.” His mouth brushed hers. “I want you , Alexandra. More than I thought possible.” Benedict could be quite smoldering when he wanted to be, “that he is. But I want to get you home.” He leaned over her, caging her against the upholstery. “You see, my dear, I’ve developed a hunger only you can sate. I wish to have a bit of wicked delight..." I liked this book, I liked that Alexandra and Benedict would challenge each other.

Ms. Kingston has delivered a story that delivers it all-mystery, murder, betrayal (more than one) and a story of the fear of opening your heart. The plot immediately draws you in and you’ll want to finish in one sitting!
An Egyptian treasure, a curse, and a trail of dead men. How had Alexandra Quinn landed herself in the middle of this deadly game. She’s content with her reasearch helping the professor. And WHY was Benedict here?
Benedict Weston, Lord Marlsbrook, never thought to be this close to Alexandra again. He’d followed the man from Egypt and had to stop him before he hurt Alexandra. He was no hero but had he somehow gotten Alexandra involved in this? What did she know? More importantly, who knows what she possesses? He’s got to get her out of this mess quickly.
Who is behind this game of cat and mouse? Can 10 years of hurt, betrayal, and longing be pushed aside to solve this mystery? Will their future be secured or forever destroyed?
