Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the eARC.
This was the first book I read by Margaret Mizushima and it definitely won't be the last...I want to read the whole series!
The relationship between Mattie Cobb and her K9 partner Robo is lovely; Robo is a truly magnificent dog and it's obvious the author has done extensive research on K9s and their handlers and loves writing about the close bond the dogs and their humans form.
The setting is Colorado. Never having visited, I definitely want to after this book, and will take my Chihuahua partner, lol.
Terrific mystery, marvellous characters and well written; I'm just sorry I hadn't read the previous books in order. It's highly enjoyable as a standalone, but it would probably have been better to know more about the characters' backstories. Highly recommended for dog and mystery lovers.

I love the relationship between Mattie and Robo. This book brings more of Mattie’s complicated childhood to light and it also gives a great insight into how this has played such a role in making Mattie the person she is and also how it has made her an excellent police officer. Margaret has written another excellent book.

A compelling mystery filled with twists and turns, suspense, and the comforting bond of family and friends. Deputy Maddie Cobb and her K-9, Robo, work together with the sheriff's department, the FBI, the local vet, and the local wildlife manger to determine who was responsible for the death of the burned body found in the mountains around Timber Creek. A riveting story!

Love this series for its authentic tone with the animals, and the mystery is sharp and exceptionally done. The books keep getting better, I look forward to the next!

Quite enjoyable! This is the first book I've read in this series - I'm definitely going to go back and read the earlier ones.

Thank you #NetGalley and #crookedlanebooks for the eARC.

Don't give up! Started slowly and rather uninteresting but about 40% though it really picks up. Robo is the strongest character development and Maggie doesn't impress me with crime solving ability but there are a few scenes that come alive and are written with passion and move well.

The author's husband is a veterinarian, so this must help her write about a deputy sheriff and her police search and detect dog, Robo. A five star mystery, in my mind

Set in a small town in Colorado, Mattie is a K9 cop with a rough past. Cole is the local veterinarian. Together Mattie and Cole must overcome the terror and solve the mystery of the murders in the area.

I thought this book was very well written and I will now read more from this author.

I love this K-9 series. The setting in Colorado is great, the characters are great. I love hiking, working, searching in the woods with Mattie and Robo as the story unfolds. This episode is a little bit sad, as Mattie learns more about her brother and her past. But, it also has lots of good relationship growth too. Good suspense!

Mattie is a K9 handler who works with her dog Robo in Colorado, but their newest case hits much too close to home. She grew up in foster care, and her past has come back into the spotlight in a horrifying way. Someone wants to hurt Mattie and Robo, and she must find out why before she meets the same grisly fate as the other victims. These books are part of an excellent series recommended not only for dog lovers, but also for fans of a well-plotted mystery with interesting and well-developed characters.

Mattie and Robo both have a tough time as they go looking into the murders on the mountain. The relationship between a K-9 and their handler is an intense and loving one. They rely on each other to keep them safe. Great series.

4 stars

While out riding horses with his two daughters, Dr. Cole Walker’s dog runs toward them with a find. It is a human foot in an old boot. He immediately contacts the sheriff’s office and the Park Service for assistance. The case is initially assigned to Deputy Mattie Cobb. Mattie is becoming closer to Cole and his daughters.

With Robo in the lead they discover the rest of the body. It is in a shallow grave and burned beyond recognition. It turns out that the identity of the victim comes as a major shock.

While searching for clues, Robo, Mattie and Cole notice some strange depressions not far from the gravesite. More bodies are found. These have also been burned, but the remains have been skeletonized, so how long they have been buried is up to the forensic anthropologist.

During another search for evidence, Robo leads Mattie to a buried Desert Eagle .357 Magnum. Is it the weapon that killed the people in the recently dug up graves? It looks far too old to have anything to do with the first body that was found.

Detective Stella returns following the autopsy on the first body with some devastating news. This case becomes far more personal for Mattie than she ever thought possible. By the time she realizes that she is in danger, it is too late.

This is a really good book. I like the characters, especially Mama T, Cole and the people who support Mattie at the Sheriff’s Office. Mattie herself, well, the jury is still out on her. I realize that she has a lot on her plate, but really couldn’t she buck up just a little? Her behavior made the book almost a parody of how not to behave when one is a sheriff’s deputy. Ms. Mizushima has certainly done a lot of research on search and rescue dogs, and her love and admiration for them shows through on every page. I admire that. Even if Robo’s cross-trained abilities did strain credulity at times. This book was an easy read. It was well written, plotted and as I noted before, researched. The tension begins in the story immediately with the discovery of the foot and continues throughout the book. I immediately went to Amazon to look at the other books which she has published.

I want to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for forwarding to me this adventurous and good book to read and enjoy.

A phenomenal book! This is my first book by this author and I cannot wait to go back and read the others in this series.

A great cast of characters and fantastic storyline. Maddie and Robo are a fantastic paring and I love Dr. Cole Walker! With emotion, action, mystery and friendship there's not much else you could wish for in a book. I cannot wait to read more!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
