This book was good, but fairly basic as far as business books go. I would've liked to see less personal anecdotes and more advice to the reader that delves into more than the basics, which I'm sure the author knows.

First, we leaned in. Now we stand up.

Jaclyn Johnson—the founder and CEO behind Create & Cultivate, the fastest growing online platform and conference for millennial women in business— offers a rallying cry for a new generation of women who are redefining the meaning of work on their own terms: WorkParty. Women who want it all and more, and guess what? They can have it.

Jaclyn suffered a massive blow in her early twenties. She was on an upward career climb and confidently moved across the country for a job—and then, was abruptly let go. Attempting to turn that closed door into an open window, she launched a company with a trusted business partner. Soon after, she discovered said business partner had made detrimental decisions to the company without her knowledge. Before she knew it, she was in the throes of a brutal business partner break up. She was only twenty-four.

Determined to bounce back, Jaclyn overhauled the mess that was her life and by the time she was in her early thirties, she had sold a company and launched the much-buzzed about Create & Cultivate platform—and advised and invested in multiple million-dollar projects at the same time. So, how did she do it?

In WorkParty, Jaclyn shows how she turned distrust into determination, frustration into fuel, and heartache into hard work—and how you can, too.

With stories from leading female entrepreneurs including Christene Barberich (co-founder of Refinery29), Alli Webb, (creator of Drybar), Morgan Debaun (founder of Blavity), Jen Gotch of Ban.do, Rebecca Minkoff, and Kendra Scott, you will learn the tips and tricks from the best in the business while cultivating the passion and happiness you need to succeed. By embracing failure and reconciling your femininity with being a boss, you’ll join the movement that is WorkParty—and have fun along the way.

I loved this book, and I'm currently loving all of Jaclyn's advice and guests on the new WorkParty podcast, as well! WorkParty has amazing resources and advice for starting a business and just general advice, tips, and tricks for women in the workforce. I particularly enjoyed the chapter about giving back. I'll be attending the WorkParty tour next week and can't wait to post about takeaways from that event, as well. This is a must-read for women in business!

Loved this book! As women, we're often expected to do everything and still cultivate our lives without burnout or any stress, handling All The Things with a smile on our face...but Jaclyn does a beautiful job of reminding us, through her own story, that every successful woman has setbacks and there are methods and sometimes madness to get through it and create a life one wants. I really enjoyed this book and if you're into business, learning, growth and a little help along the way, I'd recommend this.

I received an advanced reader copy of "WorkParty" by Jaclyn Johnson through NetGalley. I have been a fan of the CreateCulivate brand for over a year now. The company, which Johnson is the CEO and founder of, gives advice directed at women who want to take control of all facets of their careers, ranging from negotiating a salary to starting a business. It also hosts conferences in major cities across the country featuring panels and workshops that provide testimonials and networking opportunities for women in different types of industries. Now, in this book, Johnson gives more career advice in the context of her career ups and downs..

Admittedly, I have not read other female-driven advice books like "GirlBoss" by Sophie Amoruso or "Lean In" by Sheryl Sandberg, so I'm not sure if there is any overlap in the type of career advice each author gives, but "WorkParty" goes to show that there is room for these varying female voices in the business world. Johnson comes from the PR world and at a young age, she was making a six-figure salary and basically, in a blink of an eye, she was laid off. The book outlines Johnson's career, from starting her first business to how CreateCultivate came to be by sprinkling advice based on her. work triumphs and mistakes along the way. Johnson's writing style is conversational and funny and book is filling with Pinterest-ready inspirational quotes. Reading this book was like getting advice from a mentor or a close girlfriend who is already established in her career. I would recommend this book to any woman who is making a career change, starting a business, or looking for general work advice from someone who does not have a traditional career.
