What an amazing story. From the first page, I was hooked. Loved the plot and the characters, how they fit in.

Thank you Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was very slow to get going and did not really keep my attention. I did however make sure to finish the book. I think there are certain parts in the book that can be shortened or cut out to make the story a better read. I did like the relationships in the book. I feel that the author did a good job in building the relationships between the characters in the book.

Red Queen meets Throne of Glass in this awesome nail-biting fantasy. It was a great fantasy read filled with awesome magic, nail biting fight scenes, and some really cool and frustrating characters. The lore of this book was very new and creative while also giving you a feel of familiarity and made it complex yet simple enough for the reader to understand everything that's going on.
The magic used in this book was also really interesting that gave me an X-Men feel as the intense imagery really puts the reader into the book.
And while this book was filled with alot of different information and new characters it doesn't give you a second book feel. I really enjoyed the split tellings of what's going on in the story even if some of the characters got on my nerves I still wanted to know what they were thinking and feeling. All in all this was a solid introduction to a world filled with Darkness and monsters the world has yet to hear about. I recommend this to adults and teenagers alike as this book truly has something for everyone.

‘A Chosen Life’ tells the story of Tolen Parks, a teenager who has been branded a freak by those around him and wants nothing more than to be normal. However, after a watcher appears at his home, he learns of his magical background of being known as “the Ninth Chosen” and must lead the battle between light and dark.

When reading, I swear to myself that I must always finish the book; I hate leaving one incomplete. However, with ‘A Chosen Life’ I had to make an exception. I just couldn’t bring myself to finish it.

I requested this book on Netgalley mostly because I spotted a sequel available too; my logic that if there was two available, then it must be worth it! However, I couldn’t bring myself to get past the sixth chapter in the first installment.

Although, the writing was beautiful, I love Parkinson’s way with words to make even the tiniest things sound so elegant, I found myself skim reading paragraphs rather than indulging myself in them. There was the occasional over description, mostly about things that I can’t see mattered to the plot. The concept is so large and the book so small that there was an overload of information at the beginning of the story, meaning I became overwhelmed incredibly quickly.

Personally, I didn’t like Macy’s character. I found her judgmental narrative extremely irritating to read, causing me to completely skip over her sections before returning to Tolen. Him, I did find myself routing for, yet I still couldn’t bring myself to continue reading to discover more of his character.

The concept itself sounded interesting, I’m a sucker for a “chosen one”, yet the complex names and lengthy descriptions hindered my enjoyment too much to comprehend the information I was given throughout.

Overall, I desperately wanted to complete this, and I feel incredibly unsatisfied that I couldn’t. Regardless of how interesting the protagonist seemed, the pace was simply too slow for me to enjoy.

I found this story to be slow, and times uninteresting. I couldn’t stay focused on reading it. So unfortunately, I didn’t finish it.

Slow beginning, fast paced with a cliffhanger ending. This one is more about the destination, escaping the dark. I liked Sebastian and felt sorry for the two he’d gotten stuck with. Macy and Tolen are typical teenagers chosen to fight the dark. I like their interactions and want to see how what their relationship will turn into.
