A commentary on the book of Genesis. Complete in it’s look at the growth of Israel through the promises of God to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Sketchy in parts also as Messianic trends and prophesy seems to be the angle the author takes rather than a detailed analysis of verse by verse.
Genesis is a massive book. 50 chapters so some plan and structure needs to be adopted.
I believe the author just about gets the balance right. He is clear about all the descendants along the way and where they grew to be at odds with the twelve tribes. He makes it clear through the biblical references that not every character was faithful but had faith when it mattered. How names were important, and that even in the face of disobedience God remained true to his covenant and blessed his chosen people.
There is a lot about the foreshadowing of the work of Christ and cross referencing to the book of Hebrews. Genesis the first book, a book of firsts and why often what is said is of most significance.
I loved the greater detail and the more expansive insight into the whole cast of characters relating to the twelve tribes and Jacobs blessing. It is also interesting when Skip gets into sermon mode and lifts out deeper spiritual lessons by use of contrast, alliteration of points but Nee Testament fulfilment.
It is sad that so many Christians struggle to study and learn basic truths from the Old Testament.
Skip shows himself to be a trustworthy scholar to lead one in this quest, the book is informative and a blessing showing why Genesis is a natural place to start.

As a Sunday School teacher, I try to research Scripture and read commentaries along with books from teachers I trust. Skip Heitzig is always a resource I try to use. I normally but his books as they are published. NetGalley allowed me to read his newest prior to publication. You Can Understand The Book of Genesis provides Skip's clear concise teaching on this great book of the Bible. If you have been listening to his current teaching on Genesis on radio or television, this book continues his teaching in more depth but still with his clear, easy to understand writing. His writings on the story of Joseph alone is worth buying this book. Skip presents the theology that these great stories teach us helping us learn more about God, and His Word. We cannot understand the New Testament without an understanding of the Old Testament. This book is enjoyable to read but, you will find yourself referring back long after you have read it. Five Stars from start to finish.
