Thank you to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a good look at what the life of a Special Forces operative while on missions is like. Although I found the narrative to be very informative is was also very dry and probably not something that I will remember the details of in a few months. This seems to be more of a procedural type book with, in my opinion, little emotional connection to the author.

Paul Martinez does a great job giving the reader an inside look at his life as a U.S. Army Ranger sniper during his time in Afghanistan. The book showed not only how well trained and smart the snipers are, but what a very important and dangerous job they also have ... even more so than is apparent through every day news reports and stories. The author gave an openly honest and informative look into life in Afghanistan during war time with a pressing troop withdrawal deadline ahead along with team members tours coming to an end. A very informative and interesting read. Thanks to Net Galley, the author and publisher for the ARC..

The reader follows Paul Martinez, a U. S. Army Ranger sniper on one of his six rotations to Afghanistan. When I read Mr Martinez’s description of their activities, I realized how intelligent and well trained today’s soldiers are. In order to operate all their very technical equipment and negotiate frustrating rules of engagement, todays soldiers must have above average intelligence and be highly trained. At times the military jargon and acronyms threaten to be overwhelming, but the author is careful to define them the first time he uses them. ( Take notes!). This story is not very different from any of the dozens of other military memoirs, but I never get tired of reading of the exploits of our brave men and women in the military. Thanks to Paul Martinez, St. Martins press and netgalley for allowing me RO read this advance copy of “When the Killer Man Comes

A very quick read about an interesting topic. It was a good story but did not really carry my attention as other books about the war on terror do. Nothing wrong with the book but nothing memorable either.
Thank you Netgalley and St Martin’s press for the ARC for my opinion.

Well-written account of the day to day reality of a sniper in an elite Army Ranger unit in Afghanistan. The author vividly and honestly recounts the stark reality of his (and his unit's) role in operations in Afghanistan as they work to capture or otherwise eliminate terrorists with the deadline for US troop withdrawals looming. I appreciate the author honestly discussing such things as at times being hampered by the restrictive Rules of Engagement that were in place for US troops.

An insider's look at the sniper's craft in the world today. Martinez shows us what is expected of our front line troops. The training. The confusion caused by seemingly random movements of men to different "theaters" to fight in. The planning that goes into an operation (when there is time). The unrelenting pace of mission after mission. The restrictions placed on the soldiers from above, and while they are understandable, how they sometimes lead them to hesitate in the heat of the moment. The way a team works together, everyone knowing their role. The camaraderie of the men who fight together.
This was a very good book. I had a hard time putting it down.
