This romance starts with an intense situation. The intensity continues throughout the book. Both characters are extremely complex. Evelyn has emotional and physical scars that make her a shadow of her previous self. She is mostly a hermit. Her best friend, Tina and her mother are pretty much the only people she has a relationship with. When Adam comes shows up, he takes over. He is domineering, stubbornly alpha and he takes what he wants. He wants Evelyn. They form a tenuous relationship that has both of them on edge. When the are alone everything is good. Family and friends are what causes strife. That and Adam’s take no prisoners attitude suffocates their new romance. Adam must find a way to give Evelyn a chance to grow her independence . This is a very emotional book. I love Adam and Evelyn together. I look forward to seeing how they can form a relationship that helps them both to grow. Adam’s secrets need to be aired also.

I received an arc from Netgalley. Wow this book left me conflicted at the end. Evie has so much past hurt and Adam demands answers from her. Adam isn’t the most forthcoming either and this book takes you on a roller coaster ride. I hope the next book Adam definitely comes to terms with his own issues.

Was excited to read this based on the synopsis, but the execution of the story fell flat. I honestly couldn't figure out how these two are going to end together because while they've each got secrets that they're not willing to divulge, the interactions between them just aren't conducive to a healthy relationship.

Engrossing romance that begins with a bank robbery gone awry and ends with a cliffhanger!

The moment Adam Black, billionaire, rescues Evelyn Snowe from the masked gunman, he can't deny his attraction to the artist/art teacher. And what Adam wants, he gets.

Still, I'm glad that Evie doesn't make it easy. Sure, Adam is obviously rich and gorgeous, but even I found his conversational skills slightly archaic and almost too formal. Until, he talks about sex during off-the-charts sex!

Underlying their relationship is Evie's big secret. This is somewhat driving the story as almost every hurdle they have to overcome has to do with her past, her fears and her insecurities. At times she's able to stand up to Adam, and those are the scenes when she deserves a high five.

For me, #WakingtoBlack was a well crafted, sexy, romantic read with some predictable elements (wise bestie, relationship haters) and some good surprises as well. Evie's insights grow with each chapter and Adam also reveals flaws which makes him even more appealing. Definitely a book to curl up with and savor.

Grateful to #NetGalley and #WeapenryCo-Op for the ARC!

A romance that is as erotic as it is emotional, Waking to Black is a power debut to a new series. Reminiscent of Megan Hart, it packs a punch with dynamic believable characters. Initially, the story may seem to be about a wealthy alpha male and the broken girl he takes an interest in. The story proves to be so much more than that.

The author is a talented writer, weaving a simple and yet intricate storyline around two equally as complex leads. Her descriptions are so well written the reader can feel their emotions as their own, whether it be frustration, anxiety, fear, of happiness. It is difficult not to be swept away by the beautiful chaos of it all.

Waking to Black is a phenomenal start from a fresh author. An emotional rollercoaster, it will rip at your heartstrings until you think you cannot take it anymore. Accompanied by a cast of secondary characters with issues of their own, this debut is the powerful new erotic novel you didn’t know you were looking for and is impossible to put down.

he is an alpha male and you can tell that once you start reading the story. evie has a few issues in the past that will always be with her however she has done a lot to recover from it. she is an art teacher and loves to paint. she and him are feet for one and another but his mother and a few people do not like the idea. the ending will have you wondering what will happen to them.

Oh man... this story is a real keeper. The internal struggle of two dominant personalities, each with flaws and struggles, and baggage. This story cannot end.... can’t wait To see the next part

This is my first experience reading this author and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Warning though--this is a series that continues from one book to the next in case that's not your cup of tea. This is a darker read with lots of drama and angst - lots! Without giving away spoilers, I'm hoping that Adam redeems himself in the next book -- can't wait to see what happens next! I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC for NetGalley.

I’m just speechless after I’m done reading.
The whole feeling while reading this book is so real. People do get stress all the time. Especially when it comes to any matter involve with families. I don’t pity Evie, I believe she is a very strong girl who always speaks with a witty mouth and stands up the most protective man in the world. Challenging in every way, beautiful deep within her heart but always afraid to take that small step ahead. Well, I understand that’s a small step in our eyes...normal people, but it’s always a big step for Evie. To love, to trust and to care. Poor little girl meet the knight of her life, hopefully everrything will work out in the end, because I seriously trust Adam Black will be the only one who will and can love Evie unconditionally. Can’t wait till Fading in Black(may I ask for an advance copy again?), August seems too far away, I need the book right now! (Anything called book-panic-attack?)

I have so many conflicted emotions!
I enjoyed the book and I could not find it in me to put it down (to the point I forgot my oven on 🙈). But... Adam oh Adam... he was both the sweetest and the biggest a**hole of all time and I just couldn't and can't get over how much of a hypocritical idiot he was all the way to the end.

Evelyn was impossible to understand at first, her emotions and actions were all over the place. Luckily as the story progresses you start to understand her better and the story therefore becomes a lot more enjoyable. Her actions starts to make sense and you learn to love her and to feel for her.

Adam was a jerk. And not a jerk you can learn to love, just a jerk. He was rude, unforgiving, demanding, arrogant beyond belief, and often detached and emotionless. All those things (if we ever find out his past, which hopefully we will in the next book) would -perhaps- be forgiving. But his double standards and hypocrisy are not. He demands honesty and openness from Evelyn at all times without ever giving her the same courtesy. And when she points it out to him he is a total ass about it. He has his sweet moments and it is obvious he cares for her, but he needs to put his self-righteous attitude aside a little.

Evelyn's story deals with depression and suicide, so the book is not for everyone. I found it treated those heavy subjects well and respectfully though so I see no reason to stay away from reading it.
All in all it was a good book. Had a good intriguing story that kept you wanting more. I just wished I had liked the main male character more.

Waking to Black by V.H. Luis is the first book in Uninhibited Series. This is the story of Evelyn 'Evie' and Adam.
Evie and Adam meet in a dangerous way...Evie is at gun point being help by a bank robber. Once she is free the real panic attack sets in and Adam helps her through that also.
There is a immediate attraction between the two but both have stuff from their past that make things hard moving forward. Where Adam expects Evie to give all of her self and her life he holds his personal past life back.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the next book to hopefully see their happy ending.

I loved the premise of this one, and the incorporation of art was fantastic. I simply couldn’t get into this one, though. There was a lot of back and forth between Evie and Adam. They were angry at each other then not in the next second, and this pattern kept repeating. never got a handle on either one as a character. I’m also tired of the OW drama that plays out. I would have liked to see these two without the extra side plots. Overall, it wasn’t the read for me.

I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion. This book was published on 2 May 2018.

The book starts with Evie and Adam meeting during a bank robbery. Adam of course is the handsome stranger who comes to the rescue.

A liaison ensues between the 2 (Adam doesn’t do relationships) however it is not plain sailing.

We learn that Evie has some demons in her past that she is still trying to overcome however the detail of this is not revealed, although could be assumed, until about half way through. Adam pushes Evie for information, yet is unwilling to divulge his past or his reasons for requiring control. This leads to some steamy diversion sex sessions and some standoff’s between the 2.

For me this book was enjoyable but it did not leave me feeling bereft whenever I put it down.

I felt that Evie was at a breaking point. She had stopped living life and was being controlled by her best friend and her mother to a degree. It worried me that she was swapping one type of control for another when she became involved with Adam.

I liked that we are able to see Evie move forward in her life as she stands up for herself with Adam and she challenges his control of her except in relation to sex.

Another positive for me is the ending to the book as Evie realised that she is in control of her own life and understands that she may not be truly happy until she has explored what she wants / needs to do.

I am keen to see the character and plot development in book 2 of this series.

I really liked this amazing start to a new series. Evelyn and Adam are nothing alike but the chemistry between them is intense and steamy. They both have secrets to hide and have a penchant for drama. The story and the characters really drew me in, the sex is hot and the characters have lots of depth. I look forward to reading more of their story. A good read!

This book just didn't do anything for me, and honestly, I was pretty bored for most of it. Though there were times that I got a little excited about what was happening. It was well written enough, but did have a few grammatical errors here and there. To me it seemed to be a mix of Shades of Grey without the kink (mind you I haven't read the books, only seen the movies), the movie The Secretary, and a pinch of Pretty Woman.

I can pretty much sum the entire book up in three words: Angst, DRAMA (so much drama), and Sex.

Evie and Adam meet during a bank robbery and are both immediately obsessed with the other. Though, Evie definitely more so. They don't have a normal relationship, if it can even be called that. Adam speaks, Evie obeys. Though not without often arguing about it. They fight A LOT and about everything. Even their discussions about art seem to be a battle. After Evie gives her virginity to Adam, they only ever seem to have sex. For a girl who was repulsed by any other person, after her first time with Adam, she sure did become a skilled little nympho. Evie makes Adam feel things he would rather not, and act like he never does with a woman. Which includes taking her to business and family functions. Where Evie meets the people he's close with and the differences between them become even more apparent. After something happens and more fighting, the two of them are now faced with deciding what's most important to them and how much they're willing to change.

Both of them have issues from their past which form their current selves. And while we're supposed to see the changes in Evie as her growing, I just can't. She falls completely head over heals for Adam after only two weeks and they don't even talk that much. And as time goes on she gets worse and acts like a teenager when he doesn't call her. It even gets to the point where she stops eating and refuses to get out of bed because of him. That's not love in my book.

I won't be continuing this series.

Dark & delicious! Terrific dark romance that’s beautifully written with characters that are broken and tormented and sexy and just wonderful. A sought after hot real estate mogul and a captivating “starving” artist/ teacher. The author developed the H/h so well that you could feel all their anguish, intensity, sexual tension, and highs and lows of their relationship. A failed bank robbery brings these two unlikely lovers together but what holds them together? Maybe nothing will. This story deals with sensitive issues and triggers. I loved the ending that’s not the usually HEA. That deserves 5 delicious stars. But there has to be a second story for these two. I voluntarily reviewed a NetGalley ARC.

This was a gripping and intense read! Not my usual when it comes to romance but the author managed to make me fall for both Evelyn and Adam, two emotionally damaged MCs that are trying to navigate their complicated feelings for each other. It was ultimately a story about second chances and what is really worth fighting for.

I will definitely be anxiously awaiting the second part to this because I need to know what happens next. Call me optimistic but I'm holding out hope Adam will redeem himself and prove he really does love Eve and that we get to see a stronger more confident Eve! Pretty please! This has the making of a great and epic love story but I need to see the softer side of Adam and a more independent Eve. I'll just have to wait and see where the author takes us next (even if it destroys me!)

Waking to Black by V.H. Luis
Uninhibited #1

Evie and Adam meet as she is held at gunpoint by a bank robber and he saves her life then talks her down from a panic attack. He is intrigued and puts immediate moves on her but both have secrets that neither is eager to share. Adam is a big time real estate entrepreneur from a wealthy family and Evie is an artist and art teacher who is/has been rather tormented.

This is the first in a series and does leave the couple hanging. I found their relationship rather unhealthy but can’t put my finger on just one reason. He is a dominant alpha male who expects more than he is willing to give wanting to “take care of” her and yet unwilling to share as much as he feels he is entitled to hear from her. She is either depressed and apathetic of fully engaged/angry. In fact, they are both angry quite often.

It was a steamy read but it left me…wanting. It was told in first person from Evie’s viewpoint and I think if I were her I would have been fed up, as she seemed at times, by the hovering of her friend Tina, her mother and Adam. I think that I wanted them to show more depth of feeling but being cut off as they were it probably was too much to expect unless they are willing to open up and trust and communicate.

Ah well, there is hope that as their story continues the couple will find their way to a HEA…eventually.

Thank you to the author who bestowed an ARC through NetGalley - This is my honest review.

3-4 Stars

Waking to Black was a story of two people finding a connection after a dangerous encounter. While the writing was good and the storyline was decent, I found myself put off by the cliché romance tropes that the author used. The constant flirting from every female that crossed paths with the hero got old after a while, especially since it served no other purpose than to stir feelings of jealousy and insecurity within the heroine. That, along with the jealous family friend who wanted the Hero and popped up to stir trouble just really disappointed me. I would have loved to read a book with a strong plot that didn't lean heavily on these tropes. I would have loved to see the drama stem from a more creative place. Although the story was enjoyable to an extent, I probably won't be continuing on with the series, because it appears as if these issues will continue to have a strong presence in the storyline.
