This is a good book on the Holy Spirit and His work throughout the Bible.
I received this book free from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review.

This is the first book I have read by Doris Wynbeek Rikkers. I had no idea of her writing style when I received this book, so it was an adventure for me.

In this book, Ms, Rikkers explores how the Holy Spirit worked in times past. She does this by way of Bible stories which are put into modern and paraphrased tellings. The stories are not difficult to follow and the work of the Spirit is well-related to what happened.

She then takes that example and gives a potential example of how the Holy Spirit will work similarly today in the lives of Christians.

The book is main concerned with the Old Testament, when the Holy Spirit came and went. It tells of the actions that this part of the Trinity was involved in with such things as Creation.

Toward the end of the book, the examples turn to the New Testament, starting of course, with Jesus Christ. The examples go on to talk about the work of the Spirit once Jesus had ascended to heaven and sent the Spirit to dwell in the hearts of Christians. With the Spirit living in believers rather than coming and going for certain tasks, it becomes evident that the power of the Holy Spirit is magnified over and over again today.

There is a challenge included to tap into this power and to accomplish the task that Jesus left for his believers. That is, to preach the gospel throughout the world and to love one another. It is a challenge well delivered and one that Christians everywhere should heed.

I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.

This book was written in a devotional style, and therefore seemed to be a little loose on the details of what Scripture says. I was looking for something much more substantial than a retelling of the pericopes where the Holy Spirit was either said to be involved or it could be assumed He was involved.

We know the Holy Spirit is living among us and in us but we often don't recognize nor understand His work. Rikkers suggests reading Bible stories of the Spirit at work will help us realize how He works today.

Rikkers retells the stories and then adds her insights about the Spirit working today. Most of the content of the book is the retold stories. This makes the book a good one for Christians with little knowledge of the Bible. I've read through the Bible many times yet still found insights because of Rikkers' great story telling ability.

I like how she handled a difficult topic, the Spirit physically transporting Ezekiel and Philip. She encouraged us to trust the Spirit when He does things we don't understand and can't explain. We can be assured the He can do whatever God wants to be done in our lives. I like the spiritual lessons she draws from the stories, such as Ezekiel and the bones. We can know that the Spirit renews and restores life.

This book is no theological treatise. It is not an investigation into whether the gifts of the Spirit are manifest today or not. This is a gentle exploration of how the Spirit has worked in Bible times and how that helps us understand how the Spirit works today.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
