"Discipline is not something we do to our kids, but something we do for them,"

This book should be standard issue for new parents. It's a great comprehensive look at what discipline is and is not, with practical applications and perspective on the nitty gritty that is everyday life with kids. With so much emphasis on giving kids leave to "be themselves" and "be free" these days, this book was a refreshingly honest look at the other side of that coin.

Great book for those who are struggling with finding a balance as a parent. Wallace brings her thought provoking ideas to the table in a way that doesn't feel pushy. I appreciate her experiences as a parent, as we navigate in this crazy world of parenthood.

This book could not have come at a better time for me. I had just endured a toddler tantrum and was settling into bed as I read the chapters that talked about how to deal with toddler tantrums!

One of the things I appreciated most about this book was that Wallace did not try to tell us how to parent. She shares how she disciplines her children, and why she does things the way she does. But it's never a prescriptive telling of what you must do in order to have well-behaved children.

This book is filled with stories of "me too." Of reminders that it's never going to be perfected. It will never be easy, and it's going to take work. I finished this book incredibly encouraged and have already been able to utlize some of the tools within these pages with some success!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from Sara Wallace. As a mom of a new toddler, I'm very interested in disciplinary approaches, as I sense the terrible twos fast approaching. Her approach to discipline was fair, informed and also Gospel-centered. The idea of constantly striving to prepare your child for the future and focus their hearts on God was a great one. I like it much better than some other approaches about sin and rebellion. While Sara doesn't ignore the sin problem, she focuses much more on Gospel and entrusting your children to make decisions that will draw them closer to Jesus.
This book is equal parts practical, theological and personal - and I loved it. Will be recommending to many friends and parents!

I am reviewing a copy of For the Love of Discipline through P&R Publishing and Netgalley:

This book reminds readers Discipline is not something we do to our kids but something we do for them. Discipline is a lifestyle. Readers. also learned it is not an optional, and it's not a quick fix.

Readers learn to that Discipline is not punishment, that it seeks a changed heart as well as it seeks a changed relationship, they are reminded too that there is a such thing as to much discipline as well as to little.

Parents are encouraged to go from emotion led to spirit led discipline. Readers are encouraged not to discipline out of emotions like anger or frustration .

The importance of routine is also discussed, as well as the issues of Tantrums, readers are encouraged not to ignore tantrums but to take the child by hand and to give the child alone time. Parents are encouraged too teach children appropriate responses!

I give For the Love of Discipline five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

Popular Christian blogger Sara Wallace writes on the disputed topic of discipline in parenting. Rightly understood discipline is not something parents do to their children but something they do for their children. Its primary purpose is to instruct the heart of a child and not merely modify his behavior. In the first half of the book, the author lays the biblical case for discipline. In the second half, she looks at this theory and practice, specifically dealing with how and when to apply discipline to tantrums, sibling fights, lying, hurtful words, and outright defiance. Though this book is chocked full of practical examples, its limitation is the age of the author's children, by her own admission. The author has four boys still at young ages, so this book deals primarily with discipline in the toddler and elementary years, though the principles in this book apply to all ages. The author is a mom of young children writing to other moms (and dad's as well) of young children. Her style of writing is very down-to-earth and easy to understand. You may not agree with all of her conclusions and how she practically goes about disciplining her children, but you cannot ignore the biblical principles behind what she does. Since the Bible gives mainly general parenting principles, many of her methods and applications are discerned from these biblical principles. Ultimately, Christian parents should rely on the counsel of God's Word and the guiding of the Holy Spirit in applying these principles to real life situations. I heartily recommend this book to all parents, especially those with young children. I received this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

An eye opener!!! I never saw discipline as a blessing, but as a need “pain” to grow close to God! The author does not offer “ingredients” of a well done discipline, but a guide to use your authority in a godly way! For all parents that are exhausted after each day of a fail discipline, there is hope, even in our failures!

Discipline is one of those areas where I can feel really overwhelmed with the big task that it is. I thought this book was a good mix of vision casting for discipline and also practical tips. The first seven chapters are about discovering the Gospel in Discipline and the second seven chapters are practical tools. I found her ideas to be helpful. I also think discipline is one of those areas where you need to find what works best for your individual children and family. With every parenting book I read, I always find tips that are helpful and that I can apply and some things that might not work for my kiddos. This book was no exception. If you are looking for a Gospel Centered discipline book and want some practical tips to start forming your discipline strategy around, I think this is a good quick read.

I received this book free of charge from Netgalley and P and R.

This book was a fantastic. Having 3 pre-school boys myself i was able to relate to the author, who is still in the trenches of raising her own 5 small boys. The book is packed full of relatable illustrations of family life. Having previously read numerous books on discipline, this book strikes a wonderful balance I feel that many other authors did not achieve. Many books I've read in the past either focus too much on grace at one end of the spectrum or too much on law at the other. Other books focus entirely on the theology of discipline without any practical application, whilst others focus practically without explaining the why. However, this book explains the why of discipline with numerous practical applications.

I love her frequent use of scripture, her awareness of Gods grace but also her explanation of practical discipline strategies.

If you don''t agree with spanking of children this book may not be for you, If you don't accept that children are born sinful, this book will not be for you. However, if you seek to raise children who honour their parents and in doing so honour God, read this book.
