This book is very informative, it goes over drafting patterns, modifying exsisting patterns and it also has instructions on how to read a pattern. This is very good for somone who is beginning to sew or somone who is already skilled.

Whether you are an absolute beginner or experienced sewist this excellent reference book should be on the shelf of your sewing studio! Sarah Veblen knows her stuff and she knows how to put her knowledge down on paper! She uses clear and concise language, step by step directions, and numerous photographs and diagrams to make fitting both a bodice and a skirt easy to understand. Veblen starts with a clear definition of fit, explains why most paper patterns do not fit most people, lists and describes the tools you need to adjust your patterns. She explains measurements, illustrates exactly how to take them and how to transfer them to your pattern with the desired amount of ease. Her description of how to true difficult seams is the best I have ever read. The book includes fitting projects to help you create your own sloper. In addition, there is both a logical, sequential Table of Contents and a comprehensive Index in this book, both extremely valuable devices when one need to do a quick fact check.
I highly recommend this book for sewists of all levels.

I received access to this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As my work schedule lightens up for the summer, I am hoping to get back to sewing in a way I have not been able to for years and years. This book came to me at just the right time - it's a very straightforward guide to not only garment fitting, but pattern-reading and altering. I got about thirty pages in before realizing I just needed to preorder a copy because it is something I will be referring to near-constantly.

First Time Garment Fitting is a fabulous place for beginner sewists to start learning about fit. The instructions are very intuitive and the accompanying images demonstrate the fitting methods clearly.
Not only can you learn how to fit garments on others, but First Time Garment Fitting also covers flat pattern alterations and how to correct common fit issues!
I particularly enjoyed the section on useful tools, standard measurement charts, and industry best practices because these are all things I learned at university but would have appreciated understanding sooner in my personal sewing and design endeavors.
Sarah Veblen has a gift for teaching and this guide to garment fitting would be an excellent addition to any personal or educational library!
P.S. This book is MUCH cheaper than many other fashion design books and contains a lot of the same great information!

First Time Garment Fitting is a wonderfully thorough guide to fitting and altering patterns, and a must read for seamstresses. I liked the photo examples of all of the instructions. After reading the book, I feel more confident about sewing, and feel that it would be easy to put the instructions into practical action. This would be a great addition for your home library.
