The perfect sort of book to divert you during travel It's implausible and over the top in spots but it's also a page turner.

The King Tides is the first book in the new Lancaster and Daniels series by bestselling veteran thriller James Swain. Nicki Pearl, daughter of affluent parents, and is, is according to them, a perfect daughter. However, Nicki is being stalked and watched constantly by men everywhere. Her father hires retired private detective and ex–Navy SEAL Jon Lancaster, who, since he works privately, prides himself on getting the job done even though his methods aren’t always legal or according to law enforcement protocol. Lancaster teams up with Beth Daniels, who is now an FBI agent, but is also a former abduction victim; she can see other angles because of her past, and is the perfect partner Together they investigate the stalking, as well as attempted kidnappings. No one can figure out why Nicki is a victim; Lancaster pulls her out of school and orders her parents not to leave her side.

Swain has done an excellent job of developing his characters. Lancaster is not a typical hero; he is rough and crass, but somehow readers will trust him and like him. Daniels is also a believable character. Together, they make a good team, and readers will anticipate them working together in subsequent novels. Swain has also done an excellent job of telling the story, with unexpected events and suspense that begins at the start and doesn’t stop until the surprising end.

All told, this is a thriller worth reading. Graphic violence is kept to a minimum, and the book is a fascinating read.

It seemed a bit overdone. That being said, I am sure it will sell like many other thrillers. It would be a good beach read, as it was easy to fly through. However, I found myself not really caring about any of the characters, and I was not invested in the plot as a whole.

Nicki Pearl, the teenage daughter of a rich and successful doctor, is an exemplary child. Well-behaved and calm, she looks like the perfect daughter. But if that's true, why are strange men trailing her and attempting to kidnap her? The family is terrified, and ex-cop Jon Lancaster is their last resort. The man is not afraid to use means the police wouldn't in order to protect the girl and come to the bottom of this. But his findings become disturbing- is it possible that Nicki is not the perfect daughter everyone has thought to this day?

The King Tides is a fast-paced story. Part mystery and part thriller. it has quite a few twists and turns, and is an interesting quick read. The characters all have sufficient background so as to seem believable. However, there were quite a few plot holes that weren't convincingly filled in; consequently, the story lost some of its charm. Overall a good, quick and easy read, recommended for people who like "cop stories".

I think the Navy must be running out of SEALS at this point. This is an overused story line and I was done half way through. DNF

A fair first novel in a series, this was a quick read. The plot has a few too many holes in it that are conveniently filled. The idea of child pornography and abduction is a tough subject and this is not graphic. Not sure if I would read more of this series. This caught my attention because Michael Connelly had given it a favorable blurb.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for a review copy of The King Tides, the first novel to feature Florida based PI Jon Lancaster.

Jon is in the middle of hunting for a missing young woman when Dr Nolan Pearl asks for his help. His 15 year old daughter, Nicki, is being stalked by numerous men for no apparent reason and he wants Jon to stop it but with no obvious motive for it Jon has to feel his way slowly.

I thoroughly enjoyed The King Tides. It isn't a particularly profound novel and has a slightly tongue in cheek tone so it's a fun read despite the subject matter and held my attention throughout. Jon is a bit slow to catch on to what was happening as it's fairly obvious but once he gets going he's hell on wheels in both the action and deductive stakes. I like the pacing in the novel as there is always something going on and more to anticipate, some of it is silly but the theme is serious. I also like that it is a straightforward third person narrative so the reader lives the events with Jon.

Jon is an excellent protagonist. He beats to his own drum, starting with his physical description. He is an ex Navy SEAL so is very fit but his dress is casual and he has a protuberant belly so people tend to underestimate him and judge him a slob. I don't think the author got these descriptive passages quite right, tending to dwell overly on the belly and the SEALS but this is a minor point. He is a hardman and no pushover but there is a certain easygoingness and goofiness to his personality that makes him very likeable.

The King Tides is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Ehhhhhhhh.

The King Tides was rather cliche. I found the plot to be noting new - I've read many, many thrillers and this one didn't surprise me with anything. It's a quick read, but nothing was...good.

Thanks to netGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview The King Tides by James Swain.
The plot is intricate and absorbing, the characters are developed and interesting, and the plot is fast paced.
An ex-navy seal, Lancaster, teams up with a FBI agent, Daniels, are dispatched to help a young girl who is being stalked. Why this girl, and why are so many interested in her...The more they investigate, the more they begin to wonder if there is more to this than meets the eye...the secrets keep building up....but the answers seem to be hard to find.
This looks like it will be a series book and becuase the main characters have chemistry, it will be a hit for those who enjoy the thriller, government conspiracy books.
Swain keeps the reader engaged and I found myself deep into the plot - good read - keeps you on your toes!

This was an exciting book.

I loved our main character and found myself really worrying about our girl.

The reason behind everything was very worrying. I was never on board with the solution to everything, but still enjoyed the read.

Looking forward to more books featuring this main character, though. He's quirky, but I liked him.

Great new series by James Swain. PI and Ex-SEAL Jon Lancaster is (reluctantly) called on by new clients to protect their daughter from a multitude of stalkers. In addition to finding the WHO, he must find out the WHY. This is where FBI agent Beth Daniels enters the scene. The chemistry between the two grows as the plot develops leading to, what we can only hope, will be many more installments.
