This is a book and author I don't recognise. It's a nice summer read and I liked the characters but the story took a long time to get going and became quite boring towards the end when it should be something more fun.
A nice read but I wouldn't buy this.

Alice is need of a new beginning, her relationship has fallen apart and when her grandfather dies and leaves her his old bike shop she decides to pack up her son Henry and her best friend Sasha and start again on the beach in the Outer Banks. Alice and Sasha decide to turn her grandfather’s old place into an ice cream shop.

When Alice arrives in town she meets Jack, a doctor from Chicago with who she has an instant attraction, she also meet Melly, a nurse who has bought the house across the way. As friendships and romance blossoms, Alice finds a letter which reveals a family secret which could turn her world upside down.

A sweet summer read with likeable characters set in a beautiful location with a perfect ending.

One Summer is about a dental receptionist named Alice, her young son Henry, and her best friend Sasha. Alice experiences a bad break-up with her boyfriend, Sasha is going through a divorce, and Alice has inherited her grandpa’s bike shop right on the beach in the Outer Banks. Initially planning to sell it, Alice’s wonderfully memories of her childhood their with Gramps, prompts her to move to the beach with Henry and Sasha to open a new ice cream shop. Once there, she meets a handsome doctor named Jack, in the area temporarily for a research study at the hospital and their neighbor, Melly, who instantly clicks with both Alice and Sasha.

Here is what I loved about this novel… First of all, the overall theme regarding Alice and her memories with Gramps while she was growing up. My fondest memories of my childhood contain my grandparents and the fun adventures we would have when I was visiting them. I liked Alice’s father, Frank, as well as, Jack’s father, Butch. Both of them just seemed to have this quiet kindness and wisdom. And of course, I loved the setting being that I am a huge fan of any and all things dealing with the Outer Banks.

The problem that I had with One Summer, was that it was a cumbersome read for me. Several parts went into too much detail and quite frequently, I was left wondering why the details were even significant or how they made sense at all. Then there were other parts where I just felt like I was following along with a story and suddenly someone yells, “cut to!” Frank, whom lives in Richmond, tells Alice on the phone that he found Henry’s hat behind the bookshelves that he had been clearing out due to boredom. But in the next sentence he is suggesting that he “stop by” because he’s in Tidewater visiting a friend. Considering that it’s a 4 1/2 hour drive from Tidewater to the Outer Banks (assuming no traffic), I don’t understand how he just popped in. When the puppy disappears, why is there 1-2 pages about Alice putting her hair into a ponytail and getting dressed in nicer clothes than normal to go chase the pup? Has your dog ever escaped? Unless you were naked, did you stop to get all prettied up before running after him?

Despite my criticism, I can predict that if you are a fan of Jenny Hale and especially a sweet, happy beach-read, then you will enjoy One Summer. I enjoyed the overall premise of the story, but the pace was a little slow for me personally.

Alice Emerson is a single mum to Henry. After a lot of heart-breaking incidents, she decides to start a new life by the beach. Always by her side is Sasha, her best friend.

The place is connected to some childhood memories and she soon makes a discovery, which will turn her life upside down. It includes her family and you could say it’s a shock.

The two women also meet the locals and great friendships build. Then there is also Jack, she soon sees herself falling for him. However, things get complicated, when he tells her about his plans.

Sasha plays an important role in this story as well and so does Henry. He was possibly my fave thing about this book. He brought some fresh energy into it. I have to admit, it took me a while to get into the store and connect to the characters.

It’s the perfect beach read, including love, family, friendship, romance and also some mystery. I adore the setting of the book and I think Jenny Hale captured it beautifully.

Review: I would like to thank Bookouture for letting me review this book and to be apart of the blog tour. I adore Jenny Hale's books they make the perfect summer and it would not be summer without a Jenny Hake book to read.

Alice moves to the Outer Banks in need of a fresh start with her friend Sasha and her son. Her wonderful Gramps has passed this leads to her moving to the Outer Banks. While there she settles in to a community that supports each other and makes new friends. She also meets a rather handsome doctor, however things don't run smoothly there and she has to understand love and move on before she can put her feelings on the line again. A family secret which I did not see coming makes for a very interesting plot.

Jenny Hale has a brilliant writing style that really draws a reader in, she kept me completely engaged right until the end.

This is a perfect summer romance full of the deliciousness of summer.

Alice, along with her friend Sasha and her little boy head to the outer banks to try to open up an ice cream shop. Meeting up with the sexy doctor Jack, and meeting lots of new people around the small town was nice. The ending was a little too neat and tidy though, and a lot of loose ends fixed all at once seemed a bit rushed. Would have preferred a bit more spread out or not all fixed. Even if there would be no other book, not all things need to be resolved. JMHO. Would still recommend the book, and would be a quick fun read for the summer.

A beach, chick lit read, I found it an enjoyable story but would have been not so slow going if the unnecessary descriptions weren’t so drawn out. The characters were likeable and real.

A cute beach read; I gave it 3.5 stars.

Alice just found out that her boyfriend, Matt, has been cheating on her with his trainer. But she's not the only one with a broken heart, her five year old son, Henry, is devastated as well. Having been left money and her Grandfather's bike shop right on the beach in her Gramps' will, Alice decides to not sell the property and do something with it instead. After a long and thorough conversation with her best friend, Sasha, they both agree to move there and start over. Alice decides to open up an ice cream store and the 3 of them will live upstairs. Being back there reminds Alice of the times she spent staying with her Gramps, fishing and working in the shop.

Her first day in town, she meets Jack, a doctor from Chicago who is spending the summer with his dad while working at the local hospital. The more time that they spend together, Alice and Jack have a crazy chemistry building between them. But she knows that he's going back to Chicago and doesn't want to deal with another heartbreak, yet he doesn't take "NO" as an answer. He manipulates situations where they end up in his favor. Ignoring her requests to not be together.

Jack is in town looking at a home to buy his father, money is just a number to him. He's a pediatric neurosurgeon in Chicago and he's the head of the department. When he realizes that Alice owns the property that is now off the market, he's surprised and disappointed. When she's having second thoughts about her move and opening a new business; mainly because Henry misses his friends. Instead of supporting her emotionally, Jack offers to buy the place for almost 1 million dollars so his Dad has a home. At that moment everything clicks into place for her, he's using her vulnerability for his own gain; she turns down his offer and asks him to leave. She's done.

Meanwhile, Sasha and Alice work hard to get the shop open ASAP. Jack refuses to be ignored and sends his Dad to talk to Alice. He just wants to spend the few weeks that they have left together, she knows that she can't do that without hurting Henry and herself. His life is in Chicago, hers is here.

Who will bend? If that is even a possibility?

Loved this book very much. It had just enough sweet romance and the storyline was great! I highly recommend!

One Summer is a perfect summer beach/pool read. The characters are wonderful, especially Sasha and Alice. Sasha was such an amazing friend! I loved her story, and I would 100% love a book just about her. Alice was a great mother, which was so much fun to read about. I adored the beach setting in this story. While this is a love story, it's more about family and friendship. I loved the family dynamic and how their wonderful connection played out.

A light and sweet summer read about the restorative power of love and friendship. She always delivers a book that makes you walk away feeling full of hope and happiness.

Solid chick lit…doesn’t take itself too seriously! You’ll laugh, cry, and say “Oh! No!” Definitely a fun weekend read :c)

One Summer is a sweet and cheerful read that can easily be read in one sitting. Jenny Hale does a nice job at bringing fortunate and fateful events to her characters lives which is exactly what makes it a "feel good" read. I specifically loved the little twist in the end as it put a huge smile on my face and made me feel all sorts of happiness. Some may wonder why I gave it 3 stars rather than 4th. On paper, it looks like the perfect beach read- don't get me wrong, it is. However, everything happened SO QUICKLY that I felt like I was at one part of the book one second and then another the next. Insta love stories are not typically my favorite as they can come off as a bit unbelievable, and this is exactly the kind of love this book portrayed. Therefore, I liked the book, I just felt like everything moved a bit to fast for my personal tastes. Not all readers are going to feel this way, many will love the pace, it's just not what I prefer when reading about a budding romance.

One Summer is a story about a single mom, her son Henry, her best friend Sasha, and a broken down bike shop. Both woman leave their pasts behind after being hurt by the men they love. So they take refuge in the Outer Bay. Both have sworn off men because of how their past relationships were, but sometimes the heart knows what it wants. When Jack comes to town, all her feelings on love, men, and relationships are going to be tested. She just needs to figure out if it's worth the risk to allow love back in her life.

If you are looking for a light and fluffy beach read, this one would be perfect for you. As I mentioned above, it can easily be read in one sitting (it took me only two hours to read it). You can put it in your beach bag, relax, enjoy the story, and be finished with it well before it's time to go home. It's a wonderful summer tale with likable characters, and a gorgeous setting.

Lovely feel good summer read. Started off a bit slow but picked up and was really enjoying it. Lovely characters, nice story line. Did start to get rather boring towards the end, but just kept going to see how it would end.

Unfortunately this was extremely boring almost to the point of throwing my kindle across the room. This novel focused on really random things and the characters were so stilted and strange.

Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

After reading such heavy dramas recently, I thoroughly enjoyed this refreshing summertime novel. A little predictable in spots perhaps, but the setting by the seaside was gorgeous, and the writing was good enough that I could almost taste the ice cream flavours. Thank you for providing me with an ARC of this feel-good summer read.

This wasn't for me. The author was focusing on the weirdest details at times. For instance the main character was worried about spilling something on her DJNY tank too that she bought in sale. Then we are constantly told what everyone is wearing down to the strangest details. Did we really need to know that a male character is wearing leather sandals? There is a part in this book where a pet goes missing and the lead character takes time to put her hair in a ponytail, dress in her "nice clothes" (which we are treated to a long and unnecessary description of), and slap on some makeup before going to find her pet. Gotta look good in case someone sees her.

Also I felt like there were too many references to the Outer Banks. Yes the book takes place there, but do we really need paragraphs about the lead character buying OBX tourist mugs and other junk ?

The romance didn't work for me here. We find out that the lead character Alice has spent her whole teen to adult life comparing men to a boy she met once in the Outer Banks. Once. Spent part one day with him and is now saying no one has ever held a candle to that fifteen year old boy. How strange. Not romantic, just strange. In fact I found all of the relationships in this book strange. Alice moves back to the area, meets a man, and bam is in love with him almost immediately. After a few hours together they are acting as if they have known each other for a lifetime. Same goes for the friendships in this book, the lead characters meet someone and make friends and then are immediately BFFs. These are adult women. Not teenagers.

Sorry it was just too unbelievable for me.

I love all the Jenny Hale books because they are not the average fluffy romantic story. These characters are well developed with a bit of depth.
I always finish these books and find that they stay on my mind for quite some time.
This story is full of love and of course a secret that keeps you on your toes, I got so into this story that I couldn't put it down and had soon finished the book!

This is the perfect summer story

I picked up one of Jenny's books last year at the airport, and was really impressed at the story depth of this chick lit. The characters are well-developed, with complicated histories that are pertinent to the present, and they all come together nicely to form the full puzzle. This was the same. At the risk of giving too much away, the story-within-the-story of finding Alice's sister kept me reading later than I'd intended, and finding the sister made for such a sweet ending! Jack and Alice struggle through their relationship, including their previously-unknown shared history, and come to a conclusion that works. I'd be interested to see more from other characters in this story...
