It's been an age since I've read or watched Rebecca, but this homage to the classic has me craving a reread. There are lots of nods to the original in this book, but it also takes its own spin to create new and unexpected elements to the story. Knowing the source material, I thought for sure I knew the ending- and I was wrong. I love a good Gothic style story, and this one delivered. Perfect fall and winter mood reading.

A thriller based on Daphne DuMaurer’s classic Rebecca is a page turner . Our heroine makes Max on the cayman islands where she works . Whirlwind romance ensues and before long she agrees to marry him and move to his estate Asherly . However his beautiful seemingly perfect first wife looms large in their life . Throw in his scheming teenage daughter Dani and you have the makings of a modern day gothic mystery . Full of secrets and twists this is the perfect novel just as the weather starts to chill

Fast paced and totally unpredictable. Not a lot of characters which was great & made story easy to follow, but SO many secrets held by each character - the reader will be guessing until the end.

3.5 - review to come

The Winters was definitely a slow burn type of book, which made the beginning a bit tough for me to get into, given that I'm a fairly impatient person (oops). The other factor here is that this is a modern retelling of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - a classic that I have never read. I wonder if maybe I would have appreciated more had I done so. Once the story picked up, I was interested and enjoyed the twisty outcome ending. I think those of you that enjoy a slow burn with a solid payoff will definitely enjoy this one!

Sweep off her feet by a rich older man, a poor, young woman is brought to his estate. Where she thinks she is in battle with his dead ex-wife's memory and his daughter. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you reading throughout the book.

I read the first part of the book several times before I could get interested...I only plodded on because I like Rebecca and the way Lisa Gabrielle writes......so yes stick with it! the second half of the book was so well done and explains the where are we going with this of part one, which I’d call The Caymans...of course
I had no clue how convuluted the plot would get or how implausible some of the characters actions and thought patterns were, Definitely
the best and deft plot driven of the current genre of gothic retellings.

Lisa Gabriele has written an excellent read for those who enjoy suspense stories. She moves us from the bright, open atmosphere of the Caymans to the almost cloying feel of the Asherley estate and the reader, like the narrator, doesn't ever really know who to trust. Because of the twists and turns in the plot, there is a high level of "unputdownability" to the book, so carve out a chunk of time that you can read undisturbed! I will reread du Maurier's Rebecca as soon as I can get my hands on it!

Gabriele presents a modern retelling of Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca, one of my favorite books. I admit I was skeptical, some time ago, someone attempted to write a sequel to Rebecca and it was a huge disappointment. The Winters is different, as the nameless narrator becomes less timid, and Mrs. Danvers, the creepy housekeeper becomes Dani, max’s nasty teenage daughter. Of course as always the dearly departed first Mrs. Winter, Rebekah, casts a long and nasty shadow. A clever retelling of a classic Gothic novel
