Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!

A good storyline but I found it difficult to follow in parts. Would be good to introduce each narrator at the start of each chapter to enable the reader to easily identify whose voice we are hearing

Wow just wow ,what in the world was I trying to read , it's so boring and tiring at the same time . And you hardly ever see the main character of the book, you see the other characters more than the person who the series is named after it seems, there's only one likeable character thoroughly the book , and don't get me started in the husband of the missing woman ,his a joke and a douchebag, and the main character is just as bad if not worse , she treats the one person who tries to be her friend like his nonthing, with that said I want to say thanks to Netgalley for letting me read and review it but sadly I'm DNF it at 27% and I won't be going on with this series .

Adored this book. I couldn’t put it down. Page turning suspense. Would love to see this turned into a film. Great to have strong female characters

This was a quick read and I wanted to keep reading, as I got quite engrossed in the book..
A good mystery and a decent debut and I would definitely recommend this book, and would certainly read more from this author and the next book in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and J.L. Doucette for my copy of this book to review.

This began well but after a while I struggled with the narrative voice. I like books that show rather than tell and eventually too much of the latter did it for me.

This mystery was fast paced and a great read on a hot summer day! I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!

After reading a lot of English fiction recently, it was good to read a crime thriller set in the USA for a change, particularly since this is set wholly in Wyoming, a state I have neither visited nor know much about. This is the first book featuring Dr Pepper Hunt, a psychologist with a tragic past, who moved to the bleak town of Rock Springs to start over. I was surprised to find that Pepper is not really the central protagonist, although her chapters are told in the first person: we meet her at the start, then it is another six chapters before she appears again. Multiple other characters are introduced, and it is unclear at first where the story is going, but bear with it, as it does all start to make sense soon enough. The hero is actually Detective Beau Antelope, who turned his back on his Native roots when he joined the police force, to the disgust of his family, but is determined to do his job properly.

Beau’s cousin Kimi, a crime reporter for the local newspaper, has gone missing. Her husband, arrogant philanderer Kevin, is upset that he’s been pulled away from his job as a ski guide. Her brother Diego, on parole for a sexual offence, is desperate to find her. The sheriff, whose career stalled when he failed to solve a similar case, cannot afford to let this one remain unsolved. Her colleague Cedric Yee is worried that her disappearance is linked to the serial rapist case she’s been looking in to, and Pepper, her therapist, wants to help, but refuses to break patient confidentiality even if it will help the police investigation. As Christmas nears, tensions rise as it becomes apparent that everyone has secrets, and some will kill to keep theirs...

While this did take a little while to get going, this was a clever suspense thriller, and I didn’t work the mystery out until shortly before the reveal. The writing was excellent, eloquently conveying the beauty of the frozen land - we complain about the cold here in temperate NZ, I would never survive a Mid-Western winter. I was keen to know more about the Native American culture, myths and psychology, but apart from the conflict experienced by the characters who have moved away from the reservation into the Anglo world, this remained unexplored.

I think it might’ve been more interesting to call it a Detective Antelope thriller, and keep Pepper as a secondary character and possible suspect. However, the author is a psychologist herself, and therefore it’s understandable that she chose to make Pepper the heroine, even though she’s rather a cold fish, not particularly bright or empathetic, and apparently not very good at her job, since she hasn’t a clue what’s been going on with anyone. I would still be keen to read the next one, and hope Antelope will be back, since he’s by far the more appealing character, and that Pepper warms up and deals with her own issues.

Many thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review. This was published in 2017 but deserves to be more widely read.

When I first started this book I was thinking I would give it 3 stars. It seemed pretty standard to me with typical characters and conventional storyline. But I was wrong and so glad I was and stuck to it. There are twists and turns galore in this missing person story and enough going on to hold your interest and see where it all leads. I am looking forward to the second one in this series.

Put on your to-read list.

Last Seen is something of a slow burner, so do not expect this to be the kind of novel in which relentless action follows page after page.

Pepper Hunt is a forensic psychologist who becomes anxious to know what has happened to her missing client, Kimi. The writer does not always follow the musings of this first-person narrator, however: the story is seen through the eyes of other characters too, who may have had a hand in her disappearance. And there are plenty of suspects! - ranging from her two-timing husband and his lover, the sheriff, a weird cmeague at work: this is a whodunnit and the denounent, or reveal as the tabloids now say, does come as a satisfactory surprise.

Kimi is a native American who clearly has demons - she suffers from traumatic dissociation disordet and has gone absent before. Pepper has experienced severe traumas of her own. The writer Doucette brings the insights of someone schooled in psychology to bear on how many of the characters tick here, adding to the suspense and intrigue of getting to the bottom of the mystery.

There are haunting descriptions of a desolate winter in Wyoming - this novel is nothing if not atmospheric.

It is possible that the narration could have been tightened up a little, this seemed a little rambling in places. The focus could have remained a little more on Pepper too - as it is, having mtiple narrators makes things a little diffuse.

All in all, a promising debut though.

I was immediately attracted by the cover and I thank netgalley and she writes presses for this partnership.

On the cover we see I think Kim, who has disappeared in history, walking on the road.

It all starts when the psychiatrist and police advisor Pepper Hunt who is fighting for the murder of her husband leaves this private life for Wyoming. His new patient Kim disappears. She will team up with Beau to investigate this disappearance.

A well-crafted storyline with engaging characters and a captivating story. Eager to read what follows.

This is a very good debut novel from the author. Set in Wyoming with the central character being Dr Pepper Hunt, a psychologist, recently moved there after her husband was murdered. It got a little bit muddled with the characters and it was slow paced but it was well written and promises to be a good series. Thank you Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads, Amazon and Facebook.

This is a good read with plenty of action. Psychologist Doctor Pepper Hunt is an interesting character who helps Detective Beau Antelope look for Kimi who is missing. The plot is well thought out and the descriptions of the scenery are really good. It was easy to imagine the weather and the surroundings and the characters. I hope that there are more books in this series. I would like to see how the characters develop.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

This crime novel about a missing native women plays in winter in Wyoming. It is told through the perspectives of three people trying to find the women ‘Kimi’. Which gets a bit confusing. While it is full of suspense, the many references to the bitter cold get tedious. There are also some loose ends, like the disappearance of Kimi’s brother and the unsolved murder of Cedric. Nevertheless, it is an easy suspenseful read for crime lovers.

I really enjoyed that Ms. Doucette brought Native American culture into the story by placing it near a reservation and featuring many Native American characters. However, I felt the culture was secondary and could have played a bigger role. Maybe in future books it will? I also enjoyed the several main characters that Ms. Doucette introduced us to; however, because it jumped around so much it was sometimes difficult to follow. I confused Pepper and Cassandra for most of the book. And, even though Pepper's narration was first person, I wasn't sure who she was or what her name was for most of the book. For an introduction to a series named after her, I felt more emphasis should have been placed on Pepper herself. Finally, I felt the story spent more time getting to know the individuals instead of on the disappearance of Kimi and the serial rapist. Other than the continual lack of sleep, there seemed to be no real concern or sense of urgency. As I feel like I say many times, this book needed a stronger editor to help guide what Ms. Doucette wanted the final book to look like. This felt like a draft.

This book was great! I loved the Native references. I also loved that I didn't know who was the guilty one until the very end! I would like to see more of Antelope and Pepper Hunt, especially their next case with finding out about Kevin.

The only thing I didn't like about the book was the chapters and how it would jump back and forth between who was telling the story, and sometimes it wasn't clear who was the story teller for the first few sentences.

Last Seen by J. L. Doucette was a entertaining and fast paced read. Though a bit confusing at first with the first person and third person POVs, the plot was interesting and the mystery played out well, the descriptions of the Wyoming winter felt very real. Will look forward to reading more in this series with Dr Pepper Hunt and Detective Antelope.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
