Princess Fuzzypants here:
There is an adorable ginger cat on the cover of this book. It has adorable pictures throughout the book. It is a lovely book for a young person who is learning to read. But I have a HUGE problem with this book.
Yes, it is true. We kitties are independent and do what we want, when we want and how we want. But we still make the most pawsome pets. To suggest that we are somehow deficient in the end and that the little girl should get a dog- well- harrumph! That is not acceptable at all. I purrtest highly.
Even so, I will still give the book five purrs and two paws up. I am a very nice cat.

This brightly colored children's book is a great recommendation for emerging readers. The small vocabulary needed to read and the use of repetition should support the child's confidence as they build skill. Many children will relate to the little girl imagining life with a cat and the humorous conclusion she reaches.

WHAT?! The cover makes “If I Had a Cat” look like it’s for people who love cats and want one as a pet. This book has a surprise ending because it is NOT!

If I had a Cat by Juliana O'Neil is lovely children's book.
This is a book about a girl who is dreaming about all the things she would do if she had a cat.
Beautifully illustrated, very charming and with lots of humor and unexpected ending.
My children really enjoyed it and the only objection was that it was too short.

If I Had a Cat is a short book written for the early reader. There is repetition of words and sentence types, which is helpful for the new emergent reader. The story line is about if a little girl had a cat, which we all know are not trainable. She comes to the conclusion that maybe a dog is what she might like.

I would recommend this to new readers, but honestly, the storyline isn't compelling. I don't believe it would be one of the books that children want to read over and over. The Illustrations are cute which pulls this up to a four star book.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book prior to publication in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes I get the pleasure of reading a delightful children's book. This one is an ARC from NetGalley. It is simple and fun and the little girl in the book is deciding if she would like a cat. She decides not on the last page and switches to "if I had a dog.". The book is fun, the words are simple and the illustrations are wonderful. I would recommend this book to any parent who is still reading books to their kids and parents who are helping their kids to finish sentences and pick out words. Great book.

This book is from the Reading Stars series. It is a simple book for beginning readers to build confidence when learning to read. There are only 50 words used in this repetitive story about a girl and her dreaming about getting a cat. I thought this book was pretty funny, because the little girl realized that cats don't play and really don't want to do much with their humans. She decides to get a dog instead. There are large bright illustrations on each page that will provide reading clues to the reader. There is also a nice note to parents and caregivers with suggestions to help their child read this book. A good book for a family library.

For very young kids. The book provides basic vocabulary for children 2-4 years old. This is another book of the collection Reading Star.

I requested this book as my grandson is learning to read. The easy words and the excellent illustrations made it easy to read and follow. The book tells the story of a little girl who dreams about owning a cat, before she realises that you can control what a cat does. An easy read which my grandson loved.

Early readers are tricky things. They have to be simple enough for the child to be able to read the stories, but they have to be engaging enough for the child to want to read the story. This is a delightful first book to introduce a child to, especially if the child knows how cats are. The girl in the book talks about what she will do when she has a cat, but all the things she wants to do, the cat would never do, walk on a leash, play catch with a ball, that sort of thing.

Very cleaver, and fun. I think it would be a hit.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Xist Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is an early reader. It has simple words, and the graphics are very colorful and go well with the story. Cats are wonderful donuts okay if they won't play with you! Great early reader. I rate this book a 4.5.
