Well written, touching and heart wrenching story about a family who is in a dire financial situation with no way they can see to get out of, an unplanned pregnancy, an adoption, this story will grab you and not let go. Have the tissues handy.

Have just literally finished this book and feel as though I have been in a spin dryer, absolutely brilliant and can't recommend it enough.

I have read a few books from Kate Hewitt but this is the best yet by far. I loved reading about Grace and Heather and felt as though I knew them personally, such a sad but brilliant read. I am now annoyed with myself for reading it so quickly, lol.

I can thoroughly recommend this book but you will need a box of tissues at your side.

Well done Kate and I eagerly await your next masterpiece.

I am in awe of Kate Hewitt’s storytelling prowess. Whether she’s writing category romance, evocative historical novels, uplifting women’s fiction or hard-hitting contemporary novels, one thing is for certain when you pick up one of her books: whatever the genre, her name on a book cover is a surefire guarantee of outstanding quality and she has outdone herself again with her heart-wrenching and captivating new novel, A Mother’s Goodbye.

Heather’s life is one constant struggle. Scrimping and saving have become part and parcel of her daily life as she ekes out a living by trying her hardest to keep a roof over her head and the wolf from the door. But regardless of all the sacrifices she makes and all the suffering she endures, it is still not enough. Heather knows that she is dangerously close to the edge. When she finds out that she is pregnant, she knows that there is no way on earth she can keep this child. With only one option, Heather has resigned herself to giving her baby away and when she meets wealthy career woman Grace, it looks like she has found the perfect adoptive mother. But nothing is ever as clear cut and as straight forward as it initially seems.

Grace has all the qualities that Heather had been looking for when she had started to contemplate the thought of giving her baby up. Not only is she a successful career woman, but Grace has no money worries and is absolutely desperate to become a mother. Heather is positive that Grace would give a loving and stable home to the child she simply cannot afford to keep. However, when they receive devastating news that could rip apart the gossamer thread that links the two women, their fragile world is turned upside down.

Will Grace and Heather end up doing the right thing for the child they love more than anything else in the world? Or will an impossible choice end up costing them everything?

A Mother’s Goodbye is a book that will tug at the heartstrings, have you reaching for the tissues and linger in your mind long after you finish it. Kate Hewitt is on outstanding form in this terrific story that’s as good as anything Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain have ever written. A story guaranteed to rip your heart into shreds, A Mother’s Goodbye is a gripping, engrossing and compelling read about trust, difficult decisions and courage that will not only move and captivate you, but also make you think and ponder about the paths life sometimes takes us down and the choices fate forces us to make.

A first class read set to be a favourite with book clubs the world over, A Mother’s Goodbye is intelligent contemporary fiction at its best!

When Heather discovers she is pregnant, she knows that she cannot keep the baby. Her husband has been out of work for years due to a back injury, they already have three girls, and their apartment is too small. Add to that their financial worries, and it becomes clear why they make the decision to give the baby up for adoption – to give it a better future than they feel they can offer. The decision doesn’t come easy. As a matter of fact, it is an agonizing one.

Grace can’t believe that Heather has chosen her to mother her child. There is no doubt the love Grace felt from the very start. She has the circumstances to make a wonderful life for the child and will do anything to prove that to Heather.

A Mother's Goodbye is a riveting story. It is indeed very touching. I thought the story was already pulling at my heartstrings, but then there was a twist, one so tragic, that I read much of the story with a lump in my throat.

Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC to review.

Full review to be submitted in due course. I'm embarrassed to admit I mixed up book covers, and submitted the wrong review.

Unfortunately this book really did not work for me for multiple reasons and was a DNF @ 60%. Sadly I am struggling to come up with anything positive to say: the POV switches felt clunky, the jumps ahead in time felt disjointed and I struggled overall with the characters who were bland and generally unlikeable, with a story which lacked any real substance and failed to stir any emotion from me.

This book grabs you from the first paragraph and doesn't let up. I won't go into many details, as I don't want to spoil it for anyone else.

Heather already has three children. Her husband has been unable to work and they are barely surviving. When she finds out she's pregnant, she has to decide if adoption is the right thing to do.

Grace is a workaholic loner, who just lost her father. She makes what seems to be a snap decision to adopt.

This book is told in alternating chapters between Heather and Grace, and you see how their lives intertwine.

Tough, tough decisions made by both women.

Highly recommend!

When Heather discovers she is pregnant with a fourth baby she is devastated. Her husband has been unable to work since his accident, they already have three young daughters and they are fighting to keep their home and feed and clothe their children. Together they decide to arrange a closed adoption and Heather duly selects a mother. Although she is single Grace is the ideal choice for Heather because she is well off, confident, has a lovely spacious home and will be able to look after Heather’s child, giving it a good life and all the advantages they could only dream of. It’s the hardest decision she has ever made, but she knows she has to put her family first, despite her love for the baby growing inside her.
Inevitably Grace and Heather’s lives merge together, especially after she gives birth to a son and decides she would like to keep in contact with monthly visits. It’s really hard for Heather watching the growing relationship between Grace and her son, although she garners comfort from seeing how well her boy is cared for. Slowly both birth mother and adoptive mother begin to feel a dissatisfied with the ongoing arrangement and the visits become more and more uncomfortable for everyone, even Isaac and his three sisters. It’s a tricky situation all round but when tragedy strikes both mothers want only to do the right thing for seven-year-old Isaac, whom they both love. They work tirelessly together to resolve the problem. The question is what decision they should make.
This is an absolutely stunning novel, beautifully written from both points of view. The characters are so realistic and the issues they both face are totally heartbreaking. The story is told with empathy and compassion and I literally couldn’t put the book down. I loved the fly-on-the-wall glimpses of both families and the characters of the two incredibly strong mothers. Both were fair minded and wanted to do the right thing. I found the story incredibly moving and shed tears on several occasions. I thought the best possible ending was chosen and it was a truly fitting finish to a wonderfully involving story. I received a complimentary copy of this novel from publisher Bookouture through my membership of NetGalley. Thank you for my copy of ‘A Mother's Choice’, I thought it was powerful, honest and an excellent, unmissable read. It’s the first novel written by Kate Hewitt that I have read and I am so happy that I have at last discovered this incredibly talented author.

What a powerful and gut-wrenching story about making hard choices and then living with the results. And when you finally get the chance to have what you thought you wanted, another decision to be made: is this what is really for the best? This book brought me to tears!
