As a fan of Gaskell who has read far more of her letters than I have her novels, I found Stevens' portrayal of the Victorian author so distracting that I had to abandon the book. I really enjoyed <i>Bleaker House</i> and look forward to what Stevens does next but the liberties taken with Gaskell were a bit too much for me here.
