This was a pretty quick read. It kept my attention and the story was new and engaging. The angst level is high and different than in most books because Lucy is actually battling herself and her alter image for control over her love life. She is also afraid no one can love her because of her Wyvern shifter. Oliver on the other hand has issues of his own that he doesn’t understand. Through his encounters with Lucy, he learns about himself and is able to reconcile the things he’s done in his past and why some things upset him so much more than others.

He also creates a humanistic side to the shifters for Lucy that she had never considered, even though she is one. So there is a lot of self discovery in this one. I was pleasantly surprised and would love to read another one of Jane’s novels. She uses a dystopian view of the world so there are subtle differences to make the shapeshifters work. I really loved Polly’s world the most. I hope she works that into more of her stories because I can see that going a long way and being exciting. I think readers will like the story overall and the small elements of the Hunts, Polly’s world, and dreams give it a lot of character, depth, and fullness. Each piece brings the story further along and makes it vibrant.

So did I mention there are bad-ass demons in this one and the action scenes are well done. No spoilers though, so I don’t want to say much more. Just prepare for the unexpected.

The reason I’m giving it a 4.5 is because it should have said this was part of a series. Maybe that’s just me, but sometimes I just pick up a book and don’t look into it too much. While reading it, I found there were a lot of details from other books that would have made reading this one so much better. I mean the romance was very good, but if you are a fan of Jane’s and have read all of her works, you’ll really love this one.

This title is one in a series of standalone novels from what I understand, so I didn't feel confused at all when the other characters came in. Everything is explained so that I fell pretty much right into the grove and the story got me hooked. I didn't expect the ending and Lucy is such a firecracker I swear. The romance is good but it didn't get in the way of the plot, most Harlequin books are romance first and plot second but not this one. Lucy and Oliver are very flushed out and well rounded. All in all, a quick but fun read.

Thanks to NetGalley for this title in exchange for an honest review.
